Let me explain the great comforting lie we tell ourselves about Schrödinger's cat.

You take a cat and you put it in a box. In that box you put a poison gas, set to be released if a geiger counter ticks. Next to the geiger counter you place a radioactive atom, ready to decay, release radiation, and set the counter off. Whether the atom has decayed or not yet determines whether the cat is alive or dead.

Whether the atom decays or not is governed by quantum randomness. So at any given point in time, it's not that it may or may not have decayed. It is a superposition, it has both decayed and not decayed, and each moment the portion of reality taken up by it decaying increases. This means the cat is also both alive and dead, inside the box.

And here is the comforting lie.

When you open the box, the cat becomes either alive or dead. The dual probabilities collapse, and the cat is one or the other.

How silly to think you and your observations are any more important than those of a cat, or the actions of a radioactive atom. No. The cat does not become one or the other. You become both, just like it did. You are now both a person observing a dead cat and a person observing a living cat.

And this is not even what something being quantum means. That would be too easy. What makes something "quantum" or "classical" is whether those two selves can interact with each other. In a classical probability, like what our big lumbering real world selves would experience while observing a cat, the split pathways of reality are beyond recombination, may never again touch the same world. The nature of that split is too traumatic, noisy and messy and impure, and Humpty Dumpty cannot be put back together again.

What makes something "quantum" is when every piece of the system is controlled so perfectly that you can put Humpty Dumpty back together again. The split is done with the surgical scalpel so finally and precisely that nothing is lost along its edge. And I cannot explain to you what that looks like, because what it is is math that cannot be understood with any classical intuition, which can only be found by understanding the math for what it is as math and using that to burn a new intuition, a new understanding into your mind.

But that's the truth. Schrodinger's cat doesn't collapse down and become one simple thing for you to observe. You split to match it. And that's not even the quantum part.
