You Have Good Lan Qiren Takes, So I Thought I'd Ask: We've Seen Him As An Uncle, But How Do You Think
You have good Lan Qiren takes, so I thought I'd ask: We've seen him as an uncle, but how do you think he'd be as a father?
I think he's already like father for nephews. But he'd probably stay this grumpy, yet caring self. He'll still be strict but ultimately he'll love his child. The same with their nephews. Tho, I hc him as aroace and he'd be probably surprised that he has a kid/j

there are so much interesting thematical similarities between characters of one family/clan in mdzs.
Like the Nies (the only two characters we know of) are ruthless and they all are bound by the undying desire of revenge. Nie Mingjue waited for God knows how long to take down When Rouhan and later even overcame death to get to Jin Guangyao. Nie Huaisang waited for a whole decade to find his brother's corpse and made a very complicated plot to avenge him. They both weren't afraid to get their hands dirty to get what they want. NMJ killed countless of Wen soldiers, and NHS is responsible for MXY's death, all the deaths in Mo Village, probably for Qin Su's death (tho indirectly). And that's just what I can remember. Anyway, they're shared theme is rage (be it quiet or explosive) and revenge.
The Lans, I think, have this shared passion and undying loyalty. LWJ is pretty obvious. Despite how much everyone hated WWX, despite his clan and family being against him, LWJ never stopped believing in WWX. He even went against his teacher/parental figure/uncle to protect his love. That's the dedication right there. And even when WWX got resurrected (thx NHS) LWJ was prepared to die in the Burial ground (if I didn't mess up the location) with WWX. And he isn't the only one in his family/clan.
Like father like son, Lan papa went against all that he knew to protect the woman he loved so much. Even if it meant he had to spend all his life in seclusion, probably never seeing his sons and the outside world, he was prepared to sacrifice everything for Madame Lan.
LCX was also ready to put his everything on the line for JGY. He was constantly supporting JGY, protecting him from harm (mostly from NMJ), and still giving him a benefit of the doubt after all the crazy stuff was revealed. LXC actually makes me terribly sad, because he was PREPARED TO DIE WITH JGY. HE WAS PREPARED TO USE QI DEVIATING MUSIC ON HIMSELF TO PROVE JGY'S INNOCENCE/FIND OUT TRUTH. WHY MUST HE BE USED SO MUCH BY THE PEOPLE HE CARES THE MOST? (Sorry, I'm still heartbroken) Anyways, he isn't an exception to the rule. But he certainly is the most heartbreaking one for sure.
Even Su She, who was only a student in the clan and isn't connected to the family, he was very loyal to JGY, putting his own life on the line multiple times and getting his hands dirty with no questions asked. Su She wasn't the most brave one when he was young, but his devotion literally made him go against the most powerful fierce corpse. No matter how much he wanted to distance himself from Lan clan, he can't escape the loyalty curse of Gusuâ˘.
The trickiest one is Lan Qiren, cuz he doesn't really show very much affection towards anyone/anything. But I feel like his devotion lies with his family or the rules. Despite being super strict, he tries to get LWJ return to Cloud Recesses to protect him from other clans. (The funniest part is that "lets go back to Gusu" never works). Also LQR's and LXC's little interaction in the conference about Wens in donghua made me smile sm, it was so sweet. The funniest part is that he's always whiny, but will cave in for his loved ones. I literally have no proof of him being loyal to his family, but MXTX's own words in an artbook I believe??
I am not really sure about Yunmeng Jiang or Lanling Jin clans, cuz they don't really have so obvious similarities. Lanling Jin's similarity is being connected to JGS, which is not so unique in mdzs. And Yunmeng Jiang is probably having family issues.
My butt got dragged back into my ace attorney hyperfixation, and I'll make it everyone else's problem. I'm rewatching aai1 and aai2 playthrough and, man, do I feel bad for Badd. He's a great dude, doing everything he can to protect the people, solve crime and doesn't lose humanity. Yet despite his best efforts he just can't protect the people he wants to protect the most (Cece Yew, Master Jeff, Byrne Faraday). He's a very good person, but the only thing he's bad at is doing his job smh. The unluckiest man alive
i don't think enough people talk about how the backbone of nie huaisang's plan hinged heavily upon jin guangyao's low birth, and the jianghu's willingness to dogpile on such people.
nie huaisang is upper class. he's specifically stated in the novel as behaving more like the idle rich than like a distinguished second young master of one of the five great cultivation sects, but he's still an heir by birth. even if nie huaisang had been more openly caught, who would do anything to him?
wei wuxian notices that bicao's testimony was bought with a few shiny baublesâ that nie huaisang was the one who bribed her with a nice bracelet for her testimony. he intentionally kept his own sect half dead, barely afloat for years, just to keep up the guise of an incompetent loser!
but the only actual consequence he's faced for such poor leadership that probably hurt a lot of common folks in his territory over 13 years is that people think nie huaisang is an annoying, useless crybaby. nie huaisang has a level of protection from consequences that jin guangyao had to fight much harder for (and that jin guangyao ultimately never truly got).
nie huaisang knew his own class and social position extremely well, and he knew how most people of that position behave and think. he was more than willing to use this in his revenge.
we know lan wangji is the type to use his wealth and position to do good for others. nie huaisang is the oppositeâ he's the type to use his wealth and position for himself and his own personal goals.
and this wasn't just something that started after his brother died! avoiding responsibilities, never carrying his sword, ignoring the fact that he wasn't honoring his sect or ancestors the way others wanted⌠his underground ring of selling porn as a teenager even got him out of the worst part of the wen indoctrination camps, because he bribed the wen cultivators overseeing everyone else.
my point is, nie huaisang is self-aware enough to know he doesn't really ever do the "right" thing! at no point in the story does he delude himself or others with grand ideals of how one ought to behave. he doesn't care.
unlike almost every single other upper class cultivator in the storyâ jiang cheng, jin zixuan, nie mingjue, lan xichenâ who all think of themselves as righteous in a way, who are always able to justify their thoughts and actions, rarely if ever able to conceive of those thoughts and actions as flawed or wrong... nie huaisang KNOWS his own selfishness.
like lan wangji, nie huaisang recognizes that his class can easily be used as a shield to do whatever he wants. while lan wangji at worst uses this nifty privilege to silence people he doesn't like, refuse to explain himself in inconvenient situations, and bring wei wuxian along with him everywhere, nie huaisang uses it to shirk his duties for decades and tear jin guangyao apart in revenge.
jin guangyao being the son of a prostitute automatically amplifies bad rumors around him. bringing to light his incestuous marriage and the gruesome way he murdered his upper class father, however deserved, is obviously going to impact him in a way that someone higher class wouldn't be as hurt by. combining that with a final lie to get his sworn brother to stab him in a flash of doubt, and well...
is that good or righteous or just? no, of course not. nie huaisang doesn't spend any time pretending that his actions were conducted based on morality, or that he "had no choice".
nie huaisang just wanted to destroy jin guangyao, and damn did it feel good to finally do it.
One thing I really enjoy a lot about I-1 and I-2 is a theme of availability and injustice, while always holding characters accountable. For a game that is targeted mostly at the young audience, teenagers and young adults, it does discuss difficult themes of corruption in legal system.
The half of this plot could've been avoided if people with power would care for something apart themselves. It's more of the I-2 theme, rather than I-1, but if at least one person stopped being awful Simeon (Simon) would never become such a paranoid. All this terrible abuse he suffered at the hands of Fifi Laguard (Patricia Roland). The woman that was supposed to care for him and become his mother figure, interrogated him like a convict. But one of the worst things is that Simeon couldn't even trust the police â people whose literal job is to protect innocent â because if he spoke out and sought help he'd be either silenced or investigated by Blaise (I don't have the brains to spell his new alleged name). Just because of some people's greed, he lost his childhood and became paranoid. Yet he still isn't innocent or made out to look like it. The game itself says it. During his quest for revenge he ended up hurting a lot of innocent people, whose fault was literally just being at the wrong place at the wrong time (Jill Crane, Kay, partially Bronco/Horace). It isn't justified, because innocent people's lives were taken because of his desires. And all of this because people with power, those who supposed to protect everyone, we're too preoccupied.
Same can be said for Katherine Hall. Is there a justice about Master getting in jail for a crime he didn't commit? No, and never will. Despite the best efforts of Gregory, Ray (Eddie) and Badd, nothing could be done, because authority to end the investigation belonged to MVK. His perfectionism was put above someone's life. And he got away with it. For 18 years.... Yet game doesn't try to say that Kate should've gone through with killing Dane. Because murder is never okay and because once again, it harms people unrelated to this case.
This is very good moral and very interesting topic to bring up.
I could go on and on about how these two games are about corruption and lies. But one question that applies to every character IMO is Where is a justice and if it even is achievable. Where is the justice for their suffering and should they resort to illegal means to find it?
I love this games
