It's been a long time since I posted and I'm sorry. Here's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to make it batter. In a new art style that I'm slowly trying to revitalize after a few years of nothing but anime characters. (I'm currently working on Hamlet himself. Hopefully I'll get that out sooner because I'm NOT going all out with backgrounds like I did here! But can you blame me here, my boys deserve something more than what they get in the play!)

Sorry thinking about how Act 3 Scene 2 Ros says the exact fucking thing to hamlet that hamlet said to Ophelia just a scene before- ‘You/I once did love me/you.’

There was a production where Guildenstern was deaf and that just made the recorder scene worse because Hamlet is essentially rubbing in Guil’s disability :( and Rosencrantz looked about ready to cry because he was the one translating for Guil

I’ve actually always headcanoned Ros as HOH. I thought it was cool, giving a disability to a character that clearly is able to overcome it (given that he doesn’t shut up<3)

I think in a similar way, the sponge scene that I mentioned in my previous post gets Guil riled up because of Hamlet’s line “I am glad of it: a knavish speech sleeps in a foolish ear.” He’s essentially calling Ros stupid, yeah? I think it could easily be interpreted that Ros is autistic and is unable to fully understand social cues, sarcasm, and insults. He claims to ‘understand [Hamlet] not’ before the foolish ear line, which is on par if he is, in fact, autistic.

So, essentially, I interpret it as Hamlet— well knowing Ros has issues understanding social cues— calling him stupid for something he can’t help. With that information, it makes total sense that Guil takes personal offense to it and explodes.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern’s Excellent Adventure

silly costume idea for RAGAD

My friend (who was my Rosencrantz when we did the play for theatre class) and I came up with this idea a while ago, but I forgot to post about it until now. 

Basically Ros and Guil both wear shirts which say their names on the front, but when they turn around, the other name is printed on the back. (For example, Guildenstern’s shirt might say ‘Guildenstern’ on the front, but then he turns around and it says ‘Rosencrantz’). So the shirts don’t actually identify the characters at all. 

And then part way through the play, they decide they are wearing the wrong shirts, so they switch. This is obviously pointless because the shirts have both names on them anyway. 

Finally, one of them thinks his shirt is on backwards so he flips it around. Now they both have the same name on the front. 

This can be obviously used as a comedic element, as well as playing with the theme of identity.

On colour coding in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

This is apparently now a blog where I only post rambles about ragad because that is all I think about. 

Anyways, so, I was thinking about how Ros and Guil are often colour coded in red and green, like to the point where it’s a convention of the play, but there’s no actual reason for doing this? If you think about other plays that do this sort of thing- the first that comes to mind is Romeo and Juliet- colour coordination is used to represent the characters’ identity, in this example it shows the Capulets’ or Montagues’ family loyalty and pride in their identity. So initially, it seems odd that this technique would be used when costuming R & G, because the whole point about their identities is no one knows who the two of them are and cannot tell them apart, including themselves. So why would the costumes be so tethered to identity?

I think the colour coding could be presented as a conscious choice by the characters trying to cope with their confusion around their sense of self. It would basically amount to them tying string around their fingers to remember their names and their feelings, but of course it’s a pretty unsuccessful technique. It could also be a way of creating identity to compensate for what they lack, by using one cohesive colour each for their costumes. It all comes back to the fact that they are trying to create meaning in a world that is meaningless.

one of the things i adore about guildenstern is how much he clearly cares about rosencrantz. anytime ros is confused or worried, guildenstern is there to comfort him immediately and try to rationalise everthing so it’s less scary. the gentleness and compassion in his voice is evident, even when you’re just reading the script. god,,, i love them.
