They hadn't cared about her or the people in her village before. Not when the famine hit when she was ten, not when all the water froze when she was seven, not when their village was attacked when she was twelve and her mother died.

And she knew that there were other villages just like this. Villages struck with famine, with bad crops, with frequent attacks from bands of pillagers or, if they were on the border, neighboring kingdoms.

So she didn't trust them.

She kept her cards close to her chest, and she learned how to use her powers. And when she was powerful enough that she defeated her trainers, this Kingdom and its poor leaders would burn.

When you were selected as the Chosen One, you were showered with gifts, training, and a new cushy room in the castle. The Kingdom thought you would automatically be on their side, but the memories of your impoverished childhood will never fade.
