You know what I just thought about?

In the fight with Flowey, we don’t have the normal controls or buttons yet. Not even whatever name we chose for Chara shows up, implying that they aren’t there yet.

However, in the very next fight, those buttons and that name are there, implying Chara is now with us – which is backed up by dialogue within the game that implies Chara is the one narrating, such as “No chocolate,” and “It’s you!” (“You” in this case tells us that our narrator is not Frisk/the player.)

And you know what’s strange about that timing?

When Flowey attacks you by surrounding your soul with bullets, just as they’re about to hit your soul… Those bullets disappear. Flowey looks confused, and then Toriel appears – with a fireball that knocks Flowey away from us. At no point again does Toriel show this apparent power to make others’ attacks disappear; when she steps in to protect you frog a Froggit, she glares at it instead of magicking its attacks away. It doesn’t even seem likely that Toriel would have this power, considering all the focus on her fire magic.

My theory? This moment is what Chara refers to when they say at the end of the genocide run that you called for them. When Flowey was about to kill you, you had no one, and everything looked hopeless – you called for help.

And Chara – someone able to step outside of normal battle rules as shown when they strike a second attack against Sans at the end of his battle (you pressed the button to Fight once, not twice, here) – someone who called out for help a long time ago when they themselves were new to the Underground – they answered your call.

You called for help.

And just like in the past, the cries of a fallen child were heard.

I was bullied for 7 years by mainly the same kid. I told teachers and got various responses such as "Why don't you try being like other kids, then?" And "Just ignore him."

I ignored him and it kept happening.

I yelled at him one morning and I was the one who got in trouble for "disrupting class"

I shoved him back after he slammed me into my locker and I got detention for "starting fights"

I reported him to the anti-bullying counselor, and we both got called out of class to have a "face-to-face" and talk things out. It got worse after that.

What made him stop was when a girl a year older than him grabbed him, slammed him into the wall, and told him to leave me alone. He never messed with me again.

So, yeah. Scare the shit out of bullies and they'll leave you alone.
