why was he even here? you knew damn well he didn’t approve of your impending marriage to kaveh, why do that when alhaitham was right there? even with the wedding being only a week away, the feeble scholar never seemed to give up on the idea of loving you. maybe he was desperate, maybe he knew something you didn’t. yet it was him who held you up when you had gotten so drunk you couldn’t walk, resorting to stumbling with one arm slung over his shoulder.
he’d gently give you water to help you sober up a bit, letting you wear one of his shirts to sleep in and not letting you leave, not wanting you to go home this drunk. maybe he just wanted you to himself. it was the way you instinctively snuggled up to him in your sleep, the memories of drunken promises to never part having crept back into his thoughts. he really wished he was over you, but he just kept falling back in love with no rhyme or reason to do so.
he knew you had doubts about marrying kaveh, some red flags just too big to ignore. even so, you still wore the engagement ring he had given you like it was a lifeline. well, you did until that night spent with alhaitham. quietly slipping the ring off your finger stung as if it had teeth digging into your heart. it’s not like that night ended in anything other than being forced to drink water to help flush the alcohol out of your system and snuggling into his side, but the guilt still remained until the very day of the wedding. with alhaitham as kaveh’s best man, you couldn’t help but look over your husband’s shoulder at the man you weren’t supposed to have feelings for anymore. he looked so ethereal under the fairy lights, a sadness in his eyes that he concealed with a sickeningly fake smile.
he’d get you to himself during the reception, your new husband far too busy with his friends and alcohol to pay attention to you. in that secluded corner, maybe a kiss or two was exchanged. a profession of love, a wedding ring thrown off with reckless abandon, and a promise to be together even if this love had to stay hidden.

your best friend had been more than vocal about his distaste for your fiancé, but he had ultimately left the decision up to you. even from the day you told kaveh you were engaged, he was upfront that your fiancé just wasn’t the right one for you. he could have sensed the doubt in your eyes from miles away when you said he was the one you truly wanted. a final party before the wedding was to be held, just you and the architect hammering things out together and the dynamics for the future. your now fiancé, alhaitham, was notoriously jealous and overly possessive, so it would be more than likely he wouldn’t allow you to be around kaveh anymore.
you chose a fancy restaurant on the beach, one where you’d feel compelled to drink the finest alcoholic drinks and wear the nicest outfit you owned. maybe it was the champagne in your system, maybe it was something else. yet you found yourself stumbling around the soft sand with your best friend in hand, giggling like teenagers who just snuck out. you had stared in those beautiful eyes of his for just a second too long, but just long enough to realize you had always loved the man in front of you.
you were too far into the wedding preparations to stop now, heart sinking as the ring was placed on your finger and a kiss was exchanged to seal the relationship in stone. even at the reception, you stuck close to your best friend, the man you’d loved the whole time without realizing it. it was tragic, really. the way you loved him never felt like it was meant to be, not when you were now married to another man. the wedding gifts gave little consolation, the silver ring on your finger feeling like it had forever chained you to a man you never truly loved, and you were sure never really loved you either.
even while still in your wedding outfit, kaveh swept you off your feet and whisked you away behind corners to kiss as if you were a teenage couple vying for even a sliver of privacy to kiss and profess your love in peace without the interruption of people congratulating you on your marriage to a man who never loved you.
