i wish i could convey to people who don’t have memory issues, just how terrifying and difficult it is to have memory issues.

it’s more than everyday forgetfulness, it’s forgetting what day of the week it is, it’s forgetting important obligations or dates, it’s missing medication, it’s not eating, it’s waking up seemingly out of a fog and not knowing how long you’ve been lost in it.

imagine you think you know how your days are going. that you are aware and in control of them. then suddenly, you snap out of the awareness and realize that you can’t remember how long you’ve been awake, or even when you woke up. you also don’t know what day it is or how many days have passed since you were last “aware”. suddenly all of your thoughts and your perception of yourself and your day is flipped on it’s head. you can’t trust anything you think you know.

and it’s not as easy as “setting reminders” or “writing things down”. and yes those are wonderful tips, and i do use them. but they are completely useless if i can’t remember to do those things, or i can’t remember what i wrote down and where, or even if what i wrote down will make sense to me later.

it’s very scary to lose control of your awareness and your life. it is outside of my control, i am doing everything i know to combat these issues but they still remain. i just wish people had more patience, because as annoying as it is to deal with, imagine how terrified and lost i feel.

please be kind to people with memory issues. it is very difficult.
