These Are The Graves Of The Soga Brothers Which Sit Not Far From The Ichi-no-Hashi Bridge At The Entrance

These are the graves of the Soga Brothers which sit not far from the Ichi-no-Hashi bridge at the entrance to Okunoin Cemetery, Koyasan.

Theirs is a story is told in the Soga Monogotari, or Tale of the Soga which is based on an actual historical event.

Some time in the year 1176, a man named Saburo Kawatsu was killed by Kudo Suketsune, a high ranking retainer of the shogun Minamoto-no-Yoritomo.

Much later, in 1193, two of Saburo’s sons, Soga Juro and Soga Goro came up with a plan to take revenge for their murdered father.

They contrived to join a hunting party, to which the killer, Suketsune, had also been invited. Once out in the forest, the two brothers turned on him and slew him. In some tellings of the story, Juro is also killed during the fight.

Goro is then immediately arrested and brought before the shogun to face charges for the murder of one of his chief retainers. Yoritomo, to the surprise of many, chooses to spare Goro, impressed by his bravery and devotion to his father.

Suketsune’s son, Inubomaru, is enraged by this decision and petitions the shogun to execute Goro. Yoritomo reluctantly agrees and Goro is forced to commit ritual suicide.

The central grave belongs to the father Saburo Kawatsu flanked by the graves of Goro and Juro. I believe the remaining graves belong to other family members.

This story is a popular subject for Noh and especially Kabuki theatre. The character of Goro is especially associated with the legendary Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro I who is also buried further inside Okunoin Cemetery.

69!!

Years since the Hopkinsville goblins visited our world, inexplicably chose Kentucky, got immediately shot at, left, and told all the other aliens to not bother.

The incident later inspired Spielberg to pitch a horror movie about evil little green ghouls, one of which was going to be a good guy. He wound up liking both of those elements, but not in the same movie, so instead he eventually made both "Gremlins" and "E.T." (this isn't shitpost but actual Hollywood trivia)

Ahhh. One of my favorite horror motifs. Spooky mirror or spooky painting. Don't tell Dorian Grey tho...
