It’s a day off.

That doesn’t mean you sleep in, though. You don’t know of a single person on the reserve that has been able to stay unconscious past sunrise without medical intervention. The chirps and calls of birds, buzzing of insects and drone of cicadas begins the moment the sun rises, sometimes even earlier, and while the cover of towering canopies filters out most of the light in the dense rainforest, the lodge camp is on an open meadow, and so you can’t avoid the heat that quickly sets in.

You’re happy to be up early, though, as it’s become a comfortable habit to make your way through your morning routine at your own pace, finally settling on your front porch with a cup of tea, bare toes poking out the cover of shadow from the lodge and into the bright pool of sunlight that warms the grass below.

Living in the middle of the Amazon rainforest wasn’t exactly something you had really planned ahead for as a young woman, but after falling in love with the place on a university trip, and then keeping an ear open for job opportunities, you had managed to land a job as a tour guide, being able to speak languages that their other employees couldn’t.

It’s a busy time of year at the Cuyabeno Lodge. Both local Ecuadorians and international tourists tended to avoid the rainier months, and after a particularly long wet season, it seemed all the bookings had been bottle-necked into one month now that the days were simply humid. Barely six in the morning, guests already roamed over the camp, some socialising over breakfast, others packing for day hikes in clumps spearheaded by your colleagues.

You take a deep draw from your mug, still steaming lightly, and feel the warm liquid warm your throat and chest, waking you up fully and putting you in a good mood. Most days, you’d crane your head down and watch the hard-working streams of leafcutter ants trail through blades of grass just taller than them, like small currents winding away towards the nearest meal. Their quiet determination and coordination was strangely fascinating to you, even after your several months living in their tropical habitat, but they aren’t what catch your attention today.

The shift in the air was felt instantly, like a black cloud summoning from beneath the mountains ahead. Yet the sky was clear as ever, the sun bathing you completely.

You gripped the basket in your hands tighter, not being able to shake away the dreadful feeling that came over you. There was many dangers in the forest, but there also many dangers in the village, people had grown desperate over the years.

The immense poverty had struck your home even more brutally than the other neighboring villages. It was not rare for thieves to linger behind the shadows, waiting to strike and snatch up the little food you had managed to gather.

Luckily for you, most people wouldn’t bother to steal what you were carrying. There was only a handful of berries, alongside some herbs for some tea to make for your father tonight. He had been having terrible body aches and you had little to no knowledge on remedies but an old woman had told you about certain herbs that were found far south of the forest, not too deep in but if you followed a distinct path that had been carved out and layered with stones, you would come across the desired bushes that grew various gifted plants.

The wind had picked up, growing slightly colder and your ears were alert, listening to how it rattled through the tall trees that surrounded you. The sudden sound of cawing made your head look upwards, your gaze landing on a raven that flew above your head. The cawing continued and your curious nature watched the black feathered bird fly lower, turning its wings downwards. Your eyebrows knit together as you watch it turn around, headed dangerously close to your head.

Instinctively, you duck your head and stumble to the side, afraid that the creature had somehow mistaken you for its prey.

It flies past you, obnoxiously cawing one last time before you watch it disappear behind the trees.

The illuminated halls were headache inducing, the heavy scent of chlorine was thick in the air and the constant monitors going off signaling a room was in need of a nurse’s assistance was never stopping. It was a slow day as it usually was. The hospital was located in the most reclusive areas of the small town, tucked away where mainly locals resided in and had few outside visitors. If any at all.

Most would find the scene depressing, the hospital was in need of a few renovations as the blinding white lights flickered ever so often creating an ominous scene. The vending machines found at every corner were not the most functioning, and as for how long the snacks had gone without being switched out, the answer was debatable but it was safe to say most had expired.

Naturally, hospitals were not the most welcoming place and this one was definitely not exempt. The energy was heavy, filled with who knows how many lives had come to an end in these cold rooms.

It was unsettling, you never knew for sure if you were going to be leaving on your own two feet every time you came into one.

Or if you would be one of the unlucky ones that would have to be strolled out in a body bag, straight to a morgue.

It was late at night, that was your first mistake. Your friends had warned you time and time again, stop studying at the library so late and stop walking around campus alone at night. But, you couldn’t help it. The semester was ending and that meant that projects and papers were a stressful commonality. Due dates were constantly running through your mind, paired with the unwillingness to actually do any of the work. So, like any other college student, you wound up having many late nights in the library with breakdowns over having procrastinated for so long.

The area your campus was in was not necessarily a bad place, you were just rather close to the city which was always something to be wary of. Campus security was not the best it could be either, they claimed to be on constant patrol but in actuality it was rather rare to see them out past ten thirty. You had heard stories of people being mugged at dark street corners and held up in alleys, but like everyone else you always thought, “That’ll never happen to me.”

You were very wrong.

Your second mistake was neglecting to bring a charger with you. Your phone’s battery was dropping and fast. Staring down at your screen revealed the glowing number “26” looking back at you. In your defense, you didn’t think that you would be on campus this late today, that was of course until you found out that the deadline for your Euro History paper was due that night by midnight. Any other professor may have been lenient with you and given you an extension, but not this one, no. Putting it lightly, he was a huge asshole.

And the biggest mistake of all, you had absolutely nothing to defend yourself with. But, at the end of the day, this happened because you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. All the conditions were perfect for what was about to happen to you. It was dark, it was quiet, and you were in the parking garage. For a campus that was operating in 2020, it severely lacked in the security department. There were no cameras, and there were not any campus security officers in the ramp. You were utterly alone, and ripe for the taking.

You had been warned, don’t walk alone in the dark late at night. But, nothing bad would ever happen to you, would it? All it took was ten seconds.

One, he began to approach you from behind.

Two, his footsteps were fast and light, practiced in their pace.

Three, you were within grabbing distance.

Four, he wrapped his arms around your chest and lifted.

Five, you struggle violently and open your mouth to scream.

Six, his gloved hand covers your mouth tightly, muffling your cries.

Seven, he slams your head into the side of your car.

Eight, he strikes again, harder.

Nine, he forces you into his waiting car.

Ten, you’re his now.
