Blind people gesture (and why that’s kind of a big deal)

People who are blind from birth will gesture when they speak. I always like pointing out this fact when I teach classes on gesture, because it gives us an an interesting perspective on how we learn and use gestures. Until now I’ve mostly cited a 1998 paper from Jana Iverson and Susan Goldin-Meadow that analysed the gestures and speech of young blind people. Not only do blind people gesture, but the frequency and types of gestures they use does not appear to differ greatly from how sighted people gesture. If people learn gesture without ever seeing a gesture (and, most likely, never being shown), then there must be something about learning a language that means you get gestures as a bonus.

Blind people will even gesture when talking to other blind people, and sighted people will gesture when speaking on the phone - so we know that people don’t only gesture when they speak to someone who can see their gestures.

Earlier this year a new paper came out that adds to this story. Şeyda Özçalışkan, Ché Lucero and Susan Goldin-Meadow looked at the gestures of blind speakers of Turkish and English, to see if the *way* they gestured was different to sighted speakers of those languages. Some of the sighted speakers were blindfolded and others left able to see their conversation partner.

Turkish and English were chosen, because it has already been established that speakers of those languages consistently gesture differently when talking about videos of items moving. English speakers will be more likely to show the manner (e.g. ‘rolling’ or bouncing’) and trajectory (e.g. ‘left to right’, ‘downwards’) together in one gesture, and Turkish speakers will show these features as two separate gestures. This reflects the fact that English ‘roll down’ is one verbal clause, while in Turkish the equivalent would be yuvarlanarak iniyor, which translates as two verbs ‘rolling descending’.

Since we know that blind people do gesture, Özçalışkan’s team wanted to figure out if they gestured like other speakers of their language. Did the blind Turkish speakers separate the manner and trajectory of their gestures like their verbs? Did English speakers combine them? Of course, the standard methodology of showing videos wouldn’t work with blind participants, so the researchers built three dimensional models of events for people to feel before they discussed them.

The results showed that blind Turkish speakers gesture like their sighted counterparts, and the same for English speakers. All Turkish speakers gestured significantly differently from all English speakers, regardless of sightedness. This means that these particular gestural patterns are something that’s deeply linked to the grammatical properties of a language, and not something that we learn from looking at other speakers.

Personal review:

+ Really great chemistry between the two main characters. Calculating, reserved, ice-cold Kaoru x Airhead, hyperactive, impulsive Shitou. ‘Opposites attract’ formula once again proves its wonders.

+ Bounty-hunting story topped with mysterious pasts and deadly secrets - now isn’t that just exciting? (๑✧◡✧๑)

+ Really, really slowburn romance - to the point that I initially thought this manga was wrongly categorised as Shounen-ai. However the pair did confess their feelings later in the story. All this slowness makes it a lot more believable. 

+ Clean, decent, easy-to-follow art.

- MAJOR MINUS POINT: Why was it dropped?!!! *sob uncontrollably*

Finally, this blog that bears the name “bromance-is-life” manages to introduce to you a bromance-ish manga! I’m glad… (￣▽￣) (If you haven’t noticed, the previous 3 recommendations are all shounen-ai rather than bromance).

Bloody Mary (Samamiya Akaza)

Genre: Mystery, Supernatural, Drama, Shoujo

Synopsis (taken & modified from BakaUpdates):

This is an unusual story of an immortal vampire who wants to die and a mortal priest who wants to live.

After hundreds of years, Bloody - an immortal vampire who wants nothing more than to go to his final ‘rest in peace’ - discovered the whereabouts of Maria, a legendary exorcist who has “Maria’s Blood” - the one and only thing that could kill an undead vampire.

It turned out that this particular Maria was merely a descendent, and was himself clueless about how to actually kill vampires. However, being the carrier of “Maria’s Blood”, Maria was constantly being targeted by vampires. Hence, an unlikely partnership formed between the two: Bloody would protect Maria and in exhange, Maria had to find a way to end Bloody’s immortality.

Personal review:

+ Some of you might be familiar with this artist through her shounen-ai work Torigako Syndrome. I adore her art. It is stylish and pleasant to the eyes. Maria is so hot he can be the sole reason for you to pick up this manga.

+ The main characters, especially Bloody, are really cute, and their dynamic develops nicely as the story progresses. I love their hella gay fluffy moments.

+ Story is not exactly the most original, but there is an actual plot and dark secrets that you would want to uncover. It can be over-the-top at times, but which vampire stories don’t get over-the-top occasionally?

- Given the Gothic setting, it is no surprise that the manga focuses heavily on death and romance. Or, in summary, most characters die because of their romantic affairs… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I’m not a fan of such method of killing off characters, I guess. However, in all fairness, the themes of death and romance can be a plus point to some readers.

- Many characters, each with their own motives and backstories, are packed into mere 10 volumes. Thus some of their stories might feel a bit half-baked.

Verdict: Read it. The ship of Maria x Bloody is already strong enough a reason for you to start reading! Here’s some precious spoiler:

One fun fact about me: I am eternally grateful whenever I chance upon a bromance title with a fantasy setting ( *̩̩̩ ᵋ *̩̩̩ ). Like there are just not enough of them out there! 

The bromance manga being introduced today might be familiar to some. After all, it is created by Sugiura Shiho, the very same artist behind the popular (and super long-running) shounen-ai series The Ice-Cold Demon’s Tale and Silver Diamond. With that said, let me introduce you:

Shuuten Unknown 

Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Comedy, Shoujo

Synopsis (taken & modified from BakaUpdates):

The story started with the discovery of the White Jewel Pin - an incredibly rare, precious and powerful magical item. When it broke in half, the two pieces attached themselves onto two strangers from two different organisations. Each man was determined to seize both halves for himself: one man for the sake of his own freedom, the other for the sake of the master who saved him. 

But – neither of the pieces could be detached from their body by any means! Worst of all, the White Jewel Pin’s magic created the oddest bond between the two men: as long as the pieces were still there, the men could not be apart from each other for more than 3 meters!

Hence, the two strangers set on a journey to settle this problem, meanwhile each plotting on how to trick the other and run away with both pieces…

Length: Completed with 5 volumes (31 chapters) + 1 sequel volume (5 chapters)

Personal review:

+ Follow the two strangers on an engaging adventure with simple / light drama here and there. The plot makes an easy, but definitely not boring, read.

+ Their dynamic develops so nicely it’ll warm your heart. Similarly to her other works, Sugiura-sensei dives deep into her characters’ emotions and thought process. It feels good to see how two strangers go from (almost) enemies to (almost) family in a very natural progression. 

+ There is this supporting character who is literally the two men’s biggest shipper (LOL). I like him a lot. And seriously who wouldn’t ship them - they are too gay to not notice ( ´͈ ᗨ `͈ ). Also did I mention that they pretty much got married at the end?

+ I personally think that her art used to be better back in The Ice-Cold Demon’s Tale - but still, for Shuuten Unknown, the art is clean and easy to follow.

- The ending for the main story (first 5 volumes) feels kind of abrupt. Luckily there is a sequel volume which does an acceptable job in wrapping up the whole plot. 

- Their adventure could have gone on a lot longer. In my opinion, there is so much world building and plot thickening to be explored (and look, her other two shounen-ai series were like 24 volumes and 27 volumes respectively…). *Sob*

This drama is pure gold and I’m obsessed.

It is completely, absolutely beyond my comprehension that this isn’t more popular. Apart from being an amazing show by itself, it checks off every single tick on my personal requirements for a perfect bromance show. God Gracious.

Folks, really, if you are in for some angsty, intense, mesmerising, and above all, i’ll-sacrifice-my-life-for-you sort of bromance, do yourself a favour and watch this.

The Guest (K-Drama)

Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Detective, Supernatural, Horror/Exorcism, Drama

Synopsis (taken & modified from MyDramaList):

Twenty years ago, Yoon Hwa Pyung, a young psychic born into a shaman family, learns about a powerful demon called "Son" (Guest). The demon has the power to control other demons and allow them to possess weak people. The possessed people then go mad, kill their families, and stab themselves in the eye. Hwa Pyung, Choi Yoon - a young boy born in a religious Catholic family, and Kang Kil Yeong - the daughter of a detective, fatefully meet when their families get interwined in the killing spree of this mysterious demon.

Twenty years later, the demon killings starts again. Hwa Pyung is now a taxi driver who uses his power to seek out possessed people in order to help them, Yoon is a Catholic priest who is talented in exorcism, and Kil Yeong is a detective who doesn't believe in ghosts. The trio meets again and tries to work together to defeat "Son".

Length: Complete - 16 episodes, 70 minutes each

Personal review:

+ The bromance.

+ The bromance.

+ The bromance. Yeah, I think you get my point by now...

This is the kind of bromance that I’m always begging to see in every fictional material I consume. Chemistry that grows naturally and believably - checked; Characters going through life-and-death situations together - checked; A duo consisting of one that is calm & reserved and the other hot-tempered & reckless - checked; Protective of each other from beginning till end - checked.

I’ve been a fangirl for a long time now - the amount of fiction with bromance that I have seen would not be below the 100s range. And I can confidently tell you: the male leads’ chemistry in this show easily makes it to my top 3. I mean, when was the last time you saw two characters literally racing against each other to see who could die for the other person first?

And have I told you about that ‘underwater’ scene in the finale? Beautiful is an understatement. Period.

Introducing the one underwater scene that tops all underwater scenes ever known to humankind.

+ These are the 3 words I’ll use to describe the story: Captivating, haunting and solid. The Guest had me rewatch the whole thing (with better definition and better sound system!) immediately after I finish it the first time, no joke. Packed with great plot twists and a praise-worthy mystery, the show effectively uses this whodunit formula to have you keep guessing “who is the real villain?”. Also, it would be easier to appreciate it if you don’t mind horror and some minimal, ‘well-censored’ gore. After all, this is a show about exorcism.

+ The cast: The main cast is a trio of a taxi driver, an exorcist priest and a police officer (this combo somehow sounds like it comes from a fanfic...) who are closely connected to each other through a tragic encounter. Let me guess what you are thinking: “There is a lady in the poster so one (or both) of the male leads gotta fall in love with her and mess up the plot with their cheesy romance!”. I am here to assure you: There is zero romance in this show. Among the trio is pure teamwork to defeat a common enemy. There chemistry is just brilliant and oh-so-naturally developed.

Trust me also when I say this: I freakin’ love the female lead, as much as I do the male leads. She is strong, hard-headed and a total badass. As impossible as it may sound, her role in the team is to protect (yes, she protects the 2 male leads lol) and to mediate the guys whenever they quarrel (which is all the time, by the way (￣▽￣)). Take my words: You don’t come across a female lead like this everyday. This is rarest of the rare.

I’d also like to take this chance to declare my adoration for Kim Jae Wook who took on the role of our ultra-cold-on-the-outside, super-sweet-on-the-inside priest. Sir Priest, you are too handsome to be real and your legs are unworldly. Are you sure you didn’t pop out from some shoujo manga?

I’m totally not sorry it took you a long time to scroll past his ridiculously long legs...

Once again, Korea does their wonders with their casting choices. Every single actor and actress - main and supporting - does their job remarkably and adds so much life to the story. Bravo, just bravo.

+ The filmography: Surreal lighting, gorgeous angles, excellent colour palettes. 11/10 score - I rest my case.

- Negative point? What negative? I’ve met a Korean drama that completely engulfed my heart and soul - what makes you think I have anything bad to say about it?

Very important advice: If you are giving this a go-ahead, watch it in the highest definition you can possibly afford to. You’ll thank me later.

Just a small detail that I wanted to highlight from Netflix’s One Piece. Even though this is clearly a Western production of a Japanese series, as you can tell from the more Hollywood-ish dialogue and action, the series isn’t completely divorced from its Japanese roots. For example, in the first episode, you can clearly tell Koby and Luffy are eating with chopsticks. And the little girl serves chocolate onigiri to Zoro.

It feels like the reverse of how anime used to be treated in the early 2000s. Remember when Pokémon had to change the name of the food to stuff like donuts and pizza? Now we have a Western show that’s based on an anime, and they’re making sure not to erase the Japanese influence in the series.
