By The Beach (Sevika x reader)

Word count: 1.3k

Listened to this song on repeat while writing!

[friendly for all audiences]

The beach was Sevika’s favourite place. She didn’t go to it often, her job leaving her barren and wasted in Silco’s slums day and night, but when she got the chance she’d go, make a day out of it too.

When she met you, that was the first place she took you. A beautiful mermaid's cove, huge stones that shot out of the sand, colours and patterns that seemed so alien to the cold world you lived in, but there it was.

Sometimes when you couldn’t find Sevika after an argument or a bad day at work you’d go there, to the lonely beach and you’d find her there, sitting on the wet sand, the tide sweeping in and up to her waistline.

You’d sit beside her, sharing the silence as you lay on her shoulder, and she’d let you, then eventually she’d talk, about nothing and everything.

That was the first place she told you about her father, how sick he was, the pain he caused her and how he moulded her into who she was now and as much as she hated him, she loved him just as equally.

She invited you to the beach late in the evening on a warm summer's evening one day. The skies in the undercity were almost star-less, the smog dampening the already humid streets. She told you to meet her there, and so you did.

She never “invited” you there, always took you with her or let you show up on your own. You knew it was important, the cheeky smile on her face dimming the seriousness in her invitation.

You wore a white sundress, almost immediately regretting it as you hurried through the dark streets of Zaun, sticking out like a sore thumb, but you reminded yourself, today was about you and Sevika.

You left the city, the beach entering your horizon as you spotted Sevika standing by the rocks that drew the path towards it, wearing beach shorts and a tank with the most dad sandals you’d ever seen.

She greeted you with the toothiest smile, her hands behind her back as she rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet in excitement causing you to pick up the pace to meet her.

You jumped into her, her arms swinging out to catch your body against hers as she spun you, pressing her lips your your forehead,

“You look beautiful, baby.” She hummed, tightening the hug once before switching the hug out for her hand intertwining with yours.

“So do you, my love.” You responded, rocking into her shoulder as she walked with you to the candlelit scenery before the two of you.

You almost completely stopped in your tracks as your hand flew to your mouth, a gasp still escaping,

“Sev,” you breathed. She turned to you, a nervous look on her face,

“Is it too much?” She asked hesitantly.

“Are you kidding? It’s fucking perfect!” You almost screamed, grabbing her face as you peppered her with kisses,

“I love you, I love you, I love you!” You squealed between kisses. She chuckled, still slightly nervous as her eyes shut, your lips planting kisses against her eyelid.

“Okay okay, let’s sit before the candles fucking burn out,” she giggled, almost as giddy as you were.

You skipped ahead, sitting down on the beautiful Persian rug you kept in your living room, realising you hadn’t even noticed it missing. Your hands ran against the soft fabric as you took in a deep breath, grounding yourself in this moment.

Sevika sat down next to you, and the woven basket, picking out two wine glasses and a fancy (and expensive) red wine - clearly an illegal import by the red stamp on the back of the label.

She poured the two of you a glass, her eyes flickering back to you, as she watched you, watching the sea, the candles and her.

You picked up the glass, holding it towards her, she did the same,

“To us.” She declared, clinking your glass against hers.

“To us,” you repeated, smiling behind the rim of the glass as you took a sip.

You both sat in silence for a while, switching your views from each other to the sea then back again, like you were deciding which one was more worth it (she was).

“Did I ever tell you why the beach is my favourite place?” She said after a while, you shook your head.

“It’s the only place I’ve ever felt calm, really calm, without any pressure to be anyone, when I’m back in the city, they’re all expecting me to be someone, my dad, Silco, everyone.” She said, her eyes and mind wandering to the past, “But then I met you, and you were the first person that made me feel that same calm. I never had to pretend to be someone around you, you just took me as I was.”

Your eyebrows upturned as your face filled with compassion, eyes glossing over as her hand met yours digging into the soft sand grains.

“I’ve spent my whole life expecting people to leave me when they were done with me, but you stayed through it all, through the ugly and the dark shit, you stayed,” She paused, her eyes welling up as her throat tightened, “and I fucking love you so much.”

You were lost for words, your face plastered with a tight lipped smile as you tried your hardest not to sob like a baby in front of her. She knew how much you meant to her, how she saved you, made you smile and laugh again, like you were experiencing life for the first time all over again.

She stood herself up, holding a hand out for you, you took it, standing with her. Your foreheads practically welded together as you swayed to the sound of the ocean.

She stepped back from you, her hands lingering against your waist for a moment before she reached into her beach shorts, taking out a small black box. Your eyes immediately widened, finally catching onto what was going on, your breath halting as you watched her get on one knee.

She wiped a stray tear from her face, opening the box to reveal the most beautiful ring you’d ever seen. The gemstone glistening in the moonlight, you bit your lips so that if this was a dream you’d wake up before you’d never want to leave, but it was real, and she was real.

“Baby,” she said, eliciting a giggle from your lips, to which she smiled,

“Will you marry me?”

The question from her lips felt unreal, the woman you’d love in a million lifetimes affirming your once in a lifetime love,

“Yes, yes fucking yes.” You blurted out, not waiting for a second to pass by.

“Yeah?” She said, almost as if she was in shock that this was really happening, and to her of all people.

“Yes!” You giggled, putting your hand in front of her for her to take. Her large hands almost completely covering yours shook slightly as she fit the ring around your finger, keeping your hand in hers as she stood upright.

You immediately wrapped your arms around her neck kissing her passionately like it was your last breath, and it might as well have been because you’d decided this would be a perfect death.

Your head fell back as she kept kissing you along your neck as you took in the moment, opening your eyes to look at the sky and oh was it beautiful, the stars, so bright.

“Sev, look up.” You whispered, she hummed, looking up at the stars with you in her arms.

“Oh wow.” She breathed, genuinely in awe. You looked at her, the way her eyes glistened with the stars reflected in her eyes, you thought to yourself,

I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with this woman.
