Just because casual ableism is deeply rooted in our language doesn’t mean we can’t change it.
sensory self-soothing/relaxation tips
whether you’re overwhelmed, dealing with an unpleasant situation, want to take a study break but you don’t know what to do, or you simply just want to get out of your head for a moment, there are a bunch of ways that you can improve your mood/comfort level and come back to your body using your 5 senses

smell
light an incense or a scented candle
put on some nice-smelling moisturiser or perfume
nothing like the smell of fresh laundry to make you feel like you’ve got your life together!
go to a bakery and buy some fresh pastry or bread if you can – or bake your own!
visit your local park, sit around and smell the grass and the smells of the outdoor
sight
make a collection of pictures that are pleasing to you, on pinterest, tumblr or just a folder on your computer
go on Google Arts & Culture and look at your favourite paintings
leaf through a book with pictures, without trying to absorb the information
draw, paint or collage something you like
look at a photo of someone you care about, whether it’s a family member, your bff or your celebrity crush
hearing
listen to some soothing music – bonus points if it’s from a part of the world/culture you’re not familiar with!
listen to an audiobook – you can find plenty of free audiobooks online, even on youtube
open your window and listen to the sounds outside without judgment, even if it’s just traffic noise
go outside and listen to the sounds of nature – or stay inside and put on a video with nature sounds!
listen to a podcast that’s neutral, gentle and informative (such as NPR’s Hidden Brain, or Sidedoor from the Smithsonian)
taste
make (or order) your favourite meal and eat it slowly
drink a cozy drink, such as tea, coffee or hot chocolate
eat a fresh, ripe piece of fruit
make some infused water with what you have at hand, and savour it as you drink
have some hard candy, mints or gum handy to pop in your mouth when you feel overwhelmed
touch
take a shower and enjoy how the water feels on your skin
change your clothes! get into something comfy, or something that makes you feel good about yourself
take off your shoes/socks and plant your feet firmly on the ground. notice how it feels to be supported
while you’re at it, go ahead and give yourself a foot massage!
change your sheets and lie down for a minute. just enjoy how cozy your bed is

some of these have been sourced from the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills Workbook, some of these are my own. please feel free to reblog and add your own tips
