Madrigals HCs (Camilo)

So I get sick of the bad takes. Really sick. Like no, Abuela is not an irredeemable monster, her trauma just blinds her. Like no, why does everyone hate their gift, why can't everyone with a gift be something like Antonio and actually love what they're given?? ...at first. Because love turning to hate is more interesting than hatred from the very beginning.

So HCs of the Madrigal kids! Starting with my favorite, I want to do everyone with a gift. (sorry Felix, sorry Agustín, but since you married in you're slightly less affected by the generational trauma.)

I'm not going to lie and say all of these HCs are original. But a lot of it is, some of the rest aren't. Just depends on which are actually good.

CAMILO MADRIGAL

Pre-Gift;

-theatre kid.

-As a child before getting his gift, he loved the sound of his family’s voices so he tried to imitate them.

-Best at hide n’ seek.

-loved pretending to be his family members

-thought they were all amazing

-liked making people laugh with funny faces.

5-15 Years;

-Used to perform and put on shows for the town, using the stage in his room, but that petered out after Camilo overused his gift more often and needed more food to substantiate. Abuela told him not to take so much food, so Camilo took less and fainted later on while doing his chores. They thought the shows overworked him, so Abuela banned him from shows until he could demonstrate enough stamina to do all his chores without collapsing for a show. Camilo gave up after that.

-Used to play with Mirabel, but as his chores took longer, and as he stopped putting on his performances entirely, he got more distant from his family overall as a result. Since his performances petered out around eleven-twelve or so, they just assumed it was puberty.

-When the kids he babysat asked about Bruno, he didn’t know what to say because he barely remembered him. So Camilo transformed into a vague facsimile. This eventually became a joke as he did it more and more, making his impressions exaggerated-it helped a lot with the itch of not being able to perform for a large crowd, because performing for kids-brutally honest kids-is fun, but doesn’t quite compare to the adrenaline and pride of the town applauding you.

-Camilo gets approached by kids all the time to sub in as them to take punishments. He did it a few times, not knowing it was bad (started at 5) until a particularly hard slap made him crumble. (age 7) he was scolded, but they saw that he didn’t really understand what was happening and why what he was doing was bad, so he instead got much harsher chores from then on as a punishment instead and explained to him why what he was doing was wrong. It wasn’t meant to be a permanent thing, but eventually removing the punishment slipped their minds.

-Especially Camilo’s. His memories get…off. What’s the point of keeping personal memories, of your reactions and your emotions and your personality when there’s everyone else in the town to keep track of? When there’s his family to remember and imitate that he loves to pretend to be? So they forget about removing Camilo’s punishment, as Luisa and Isabela take on more work and Camilo forgets to tell them that it was a punishment meant to be removed. He eventually forgets, but when he sporadically remembers he just assumes the punishment was always meant to be permanent.

-Camilo is the designated town babysitter. It’s a light day if he’s only managing one baby for an hour or so, then moving on to another one, for several hours. Break for a quick lunch then back to work.

-He only started babysitting at around 10. Before that, he instead went to help out with construction matters, with Luisa keeping a close eye on him, or really anything they needed manual strength for. Luisa, for her natural strength, was actually Camilo’s most-transformed-into form until age 10.

-Camilo didn’t start out watching the whole town’s children. It just petered into that over time. He went from a few children a day to watching many. As a result, many kids see him as an older brother figure.

-As Camilo shifts more and more, he gets greater stamina but needs to consume more food. As he's berated for getting too much, Camilo tries to play it off as a joke, while actually losing weight/being lighter than he should be for his age as a result.

-Shifting doesn't hurt. The magic wants the Madrigals whole and safe and happy. Shifting hurting is the antithesis of that. But shifting being tiring is just like any other muscle of the body exerted and becoming tired. Hence more energy and food needed to maintain.

Room;

-Camilo’s room is a massive, open space with clouds floating around and a ground that is transparent, like walking on water, you can look down and see your reflection. It looks like the sky and a lake with no earth between. The ‘sky’ changes depending on Camilo’s mood.

-Cloudy if upset, with the clouds ranging from dark, stormy about to rain to the kind of cloudy that obscures and makes it just slightly too cold. That perfect lukewarm sunny that feels amazing but not too hot for happiness. Raging with lightning flashes like a thunderstorm when furious. If he’s not happy but trying to hide it, then the room will feel too bright, too hot, not relaxing but instead steaming. If he's angry but trying to hide it, it will be dark. Just plain dark like a thunderstorm, except no lightning, just darkness.

-Camilo has a bed much like Isabela’s: suspended in the sky on a cloudy platform, next to it are a dresser, desk and wardrobe, all on the same platform with empty clear sky around him, and even if Camilo or anyone falls off he just lands on another cloud. He gets up through floating on the clouds, or calling his bed and stuff platform down to rest on the floor.

-If you walk for a bit, you come to a massive stage with benches that expand as people assemble. Backstage is everything Camilo would ever want to use to perform.

-The stage used to be the first thing you saw when you entered Camilo’s room. When he stopped performing, it began to get farther and farther away from the entrance, until it became a pinprick in the distance from the door.

That sums up my HCs for Camilo, although I may add to them in the future!
