âSweetheart, you canât just grab everything you see and throw it into the basket,â Benny sighs as he looks down at his daughter.
Little Violet was standing on her tippy toes trying to put a bag of chips inside the basket Benny was holding, but she froze at the sound of Bennyâs voice. She drops her hands to her sides before pouting up at Benny.Â
âDonât give me that look. Mommy gave us a list and told us to only buy what we need. We donât wanna make mommy upset do we?â Benny gives Violet a look, causing her to stomp back down the aisle to put the chip bag on the shelf.Â
Benny held in his laugh because he knew it would only upset Violet more.Â
Before you left for work that morning, you had looked through the pantry to see what you needed to buy from the store on your way home. The grocery store was right next to the cosmetics store where you worked, so you didnât mind stopping by after.
Benny thought it would be a good idea to get some fresh air with Violet, so he offered to go shopping for you â this way, he could kill two birds with one stone and also give you a ride home.Â
You were hesitant at first because Benny wasnât the best at picking out the correct items, and you knew Violet would give Benny a hard time and beg him to buy anything that looked interesting to her four-year-old eyes. Since you were running late and didnât have the time to mull it over, you agreed and quickly jotted down everything you needed on a piece of paper.
So now here the troublesome pair was in the store making their way down the list and the aisles.Â
âDo you wanna help daddy finish the list?â Benny asks Violet, trying to cheer her up.
She was still pouting, but now she had her arms crossed as she walked alongside her father. Violet shook her head at Benny and kept looking down at the ground.
Itâs obvious where Violet gets her stubbornness from..
Benny rolls his eyes as he bends down to Violetâs eye level. âYou know itâs not nice to ignore someone, weâve talked about this,â Benny says, but Violet still doesnât look up at him.
Then he gets an idea.
âOkay, how about this. You help me, and Iâll let you pick out something for yourself before we leave,â Benny tells her, and that catches Violetâs attention.
Violet looks at him for a second, before holding out one her hands and offering Benny her pinky.Â
Benny smiles as he wraps his own pinky around his daughterâs. âI pinky promise.â
The rest of the grocery list gets crossed off easily â with Violetâs help â and as promised, Benny lets Violet roam the aisles to try and figure out what she wants. He thought it would be a quick thing, but Violet has been walking around for at least ten minutes.
âSweetheart, itâs not that hard to make a decision,â Benny tells her as he glances down at his watch.
âIâm thinking!â she huffs. Benny throws his hands up in defense.
âWhat about the chips I told you to put back earlier, why donât you just get those?â he suggests, growing impatient.
âNo,â she glares up at him, before continuing down the aisle. Benny runs a hand down his face as he reluctantly follows her.
Finally, after a long process of elimination, Violet settles on a bag of candy. When Benny offers to hold it for her, she quickly draws her hand back, wanting to hold it herself.
âOkay miss independent,â Benny mumbles, but ignores her and heads towards the check out line.
Violet proudly hands the cashier her candy, which the girl gladly scans before handing it back to Violet with a smile.
âWhat do you say?â Benny asks Violet as he pulls out his wallet to pay.
âThank you,â Violet smiles up at the cashier.
âWell, you are most welcome,â the cashier gushes at her, before looking back at Benny, âShe is so cute.â
Benny quickly thanks her as he hands her cash for the groceries.
The cashier takes the money and counts it, and just as she begins to give Benny his change back she innocently asks, âWhereâs her mother, is she around?âÂ
Benny was grossed out â one: because the girl looked kike she was in high school, and two: because the girl had the audacity to ask a question like that.
âYeah,â he curtly says as he tucks the change back in his wallet.Â
The girl seemed disappointed at Bennyâs answer, but Benny didnât care. He grabs Violetâs hand in one of his and grabs the grocery bags in the other before heading out the store.
âWhy did she ask about mommy?â Violet asks, looking up at Benny.
âDonât worry about it sweetheart, itâs not important,â Benny shakes his head. Heâs glad when Violet quickly dismisses it and directs her attention to a tiny dog in some ladyâs purse walking past them. The lady sees Violet eyeing the dog and stops to let her pet it.
After putting the groceries in the car and prying Violet away from the dog, Benny motions for Violet to hold his hand so they could start walking to your job and wait for your shift to finish.
âDaddy, can we get a dog?â Violet asks as they walk, her bag of candy still in her other hand.
Bennyâs about to respond and tell her no when a middle aged woman steps into his path. The lady had a couple bags of groceries in one of her hands and one hand on her hip, an unpleasant look on her face. Benny goes to step around her, but the lady quickly blocks him.Â
When she opens her mouth, Benny expects her to address him, but instead the lady bends down to become eye level with his daughter. His grip tightens on Violetâs hand, but doesnât make a move to do anything else, wanting to see what the woman has to say since itâs clearly important to her.
âHey, sweetie, whereâs your mother?â the woman asks Violet and Bennyâs face contorts in frustration.
âWhat is up with these women today?â he thinks.
Violet opens her mouth to answer, but before she could get a word out, Benny speaks up. âViolet, we donât talk to strangers, remember?â
Violet looks up and gives him a nod, quickly closing her mouth.
âIs there somethinâ I can help you with, maâam?â Benny asks, trying to keep his tone pleasant in front of his daughter.
âYeah, is this little girl yours?â she glares, standing back up to look at Benny.
What the fuck?
âWhat does it matter to you?â Benny asks, his eyebrows furrowed.
âI just want to know what someone like you is doing with a child,â the woman says.
âWhat? Do I know you or somethinâ,â Benny questions.
âNo, but I know all about you Vandals, and I know that you guys are nothing but trouble with all your motorcycles and drinking. Riding a bike is too important to you guys, making it impossible for you men to care about anything else, let alone a family.â
Benny wasnât even wearing his colors today. After Violet was born, he stopped being so reckless and decided to stop riding so much. He didnât want to be thrown in jail and have his daughter start her life without a father, not to mention the fact that he would be missing out on the beginning of her life. Â
He rarely wears his colors or any type of leather in public anymore, so Bennyâs confused on how this lady knows who he is. Then again, he used to cause a lot of trouble back then to the point where everyone knew who he was as soon as he stepped foot inside of a bar or restaurant. That was a long time ago, though, and Benny isnât that lost soul anymore.
âListen lady, you have no idea what youâre talking about, so if youâd please move out of the way, Iâll go about my day,â Benny says. He doesnât wait for her to answer and tries to walk around her once again, but of course, she stops him. Benny clenches his jaw.
âYouâre not going anywhere until I know that this child is yours,â she folds her arms.
A few people stare at them as they walk by or get into their cars.Â
âThatâs none of your business,â Benny scoffs.
âIt is when Iâm concerned for this childâs wellbeing,â the lady states matter-of-factly, pointing down at Violet.
Violet looks up at her father in confusion. Sheâs not sure whatâs going on, but since itâs obvious that Benny doesnât like the lady in front of her, she decides that she shouldnât like her either.
Benny lets out a frustrated sigh and looks at Violet to ask, âViolet, do you feel safe with me?â
Violet just nods, moving closer to Bennyâs leg.
âSee,â Benny says to the woman, âsheâs fine.â
âThat doesnât mean anything at all,â the lady says.
âListen, I donât have time for this. Please move,â Benny tells her through gritted teeth. His patience is wearing thin.
But the lady doesnât move, and instead continues to stare Benny down.
âWhatâs going on here?â you ask as you walk up behind the lady.
Benny and Violet were so occupied with the woman, that neither of them realized you were walking toward them.Â
âThank god, someone else is concerned,â the lady mumbles before turning to face you. âI just want to make sure that this little girl belongs to this man, but heâs being difficult.â
âThe little girl looks fine to me,â you tell her, giving Violet a smile to which she happily returns.
âBut you canât be too sure of that, the man is practically squeezing this little girlâs arm to keep her next to him,â the lady says.
Your eyebrows furrow and you look over at Benny in confusion. Benny just shrugs and rolls his eyes.
âWell, I think itâs obvious that nothing strange is going on here, so why donât you go,â you try to reassure the woman.
âIâm not going anywhere until Iâm certain, Iâll call the police if I have to.â
âWhatâs your name?â you ask the lady, taking a couple steps closer to her.
âCheryl,â she answers.Â
âListen, Cheryl, I donât know why you think youâre trying to do, but itâs time for you to walk away. That man is my husband, and the child is mine. If thatâs not enough for you, I donât care. You clearly need attention so go find it from someone else, or better yet, get a life,â you say, walking past the lady to go stand next to Benny.
Cherylâs mouth parts in disbelief as she looks between you and Benny.
âIs there anything else youâd like to say? Did you want to bitch and complain some more?â you ask. Benny's eyes widen in surprise, you rarely swear. He has to bite his lip to stop himself from smiling.
Cheryl holds her head up high and clears her throat to reply, âIâll be on my way.â
âGood. Go play vigilante somewhere else, bitch,â you roll your eyes.
The lady looks like wants to say something else, but she doesnât. You watch her let out an annoyed breath before turning around and walking away.
When sheâs out of earshot, you look up at Benny. âWhat the hell was that?â
âI donât know. She knew I was Vandal and just assumed the worst. It doesnât really matter anymore,â Benny answers, watching the woman walk away.
âLooks like your past is coming up to you,â you let out a laugh resulting in Benny sending you a playful glare.
As you all start walking back to the car, Violet comes to your side and tugs your hand for you to look down at her. Benny watches as Violet holds her bag of candy up for you to see.Â
âUh oh,â he mumbles and pretends to be distracted by the keys in his hand.
âA whole bag, Benny? You couldnât have just bought her a lollipop or something?â you look over at him and wait for him to look back at you.
âWell what was I supposed to do, say no?â he throws his hands up.
âYeah, I do it all the time,â you nod.
âWell, I donât know about you, but Iâd actually like to stay on her good side,â Benny says, placing his hand on top of Violet's head.

âAre you sure itâs okay that Iâm coming?â you ask Kathy as she finds a spot on the crowded grass to park.
You look down at your baby pink top, jeans, and white shoes, beginning to second guess your outfit choice. Despite your outfit being basic, you still felt odd amongst all the leather and dark colors. Even Kathy wasnât wearing anything bright.
âOf course it is. These people donât care,â Kathy tells as she puts the car in park. âPlus, if it was a problem, Benny wouldnât have asked you to come.â
Benny loved your outfits. He thought it made you stand out next to him, and he loved that.
âYou and I both know he wouldâve still invited me if it even if it was a problem,â you point out, causing her to laugh in response.
âBesides you havenât been around the girls in a while and they're looking forward to seeing you again,â Kathy says.
All the commotion outside could still be heard loud and clear even through the closed windows. You knew about the people Kathy and Benny hung out with and their well known reputation â she was technically the one who introduced you to Benny.
It also wasnât uncommon for you to see members of the club riding through the streets whenever you were out in public running errands, but youâve never actually met them. Dating Benny and being friends with some of the guysâ girlfriends was the closest you have gotten to this world. Benny thought it was finally time you meet the club and he thought this outing was the perfect opportunity.
Kathy could see the look of uncertainty on your face as you looked down. âYou look fine, donât worry about it too much. These guys practically wear the same thing all the time, so who are they to judge? Now get the hell out of my car.â
Making sure to grab your homemade cookies from the backseat, you both start heading towards the group. It was your idea to bring the cookies, thinking that it would make it easier for the guys to like you if you brought something to offer. You kind of went overboard and made way too many, though.
As the two of you walk to the table where the girls are, you spot Benny at another table having a smoke and talking to some of the other members.
âYou actually came,â one of the girls, whose name you unfortunately forgot, smiled. She jumps up to give you a hug, before taking the cookie-filled container out of your hands, âAnd you brought goodies.âÂ
âYou would go straight for the food,â Kathy jokes as the girl sits down, allowing others to reach their hand into the container.
The girl shrugs. âHer cookies are the best.â
âItâs been so long since Iâve last seen you,â Gail, whose name you do remember, tells you. You go to sit down next to her, while Kathy sits across from you. âYou should come riding with us one time.â
âYou ride?â you ask her, your eyebrows raised.
âWell, no not me, but my boyfriend does,â Gail says.
You turn your head as she nods in what you're assuming is her boyfriendâs general direction, but all you notice is Benny walking towards the table.
Benny had noticed your arrival, but Johnny kept running his mouth and he couldnât find the right time to get away. He eventually just decided to get up and leave because there was no telling if the conversation would ever end, and as of now you were more important to him.
When Benny had first met you it was outside of a bar that basically belonged to the Vandals. You were only there to drop off some money for Kathy for whatever reason because she couldnât seem to get away.
You were hesitant at first because one: it was the middle of the night, and two: you would be going to a place where all the bikeriders hung out. A bar and a bunch of crazy men didnât seem like the best combination and you didnât even understand why Kathy would always go to such a place, but nevertheless she was your best friend, so you felt obligated to go.
You had barely entered the bar when Kathy had come running up to you and thanking you. You were about to tell her it was no problem â even though it most definitely was â but you got distracted by this man coming up behind her.
The tattoos and the unlit cigarette hanging from his lips shouldâve been a turn off for you, but you couldnât help but feel attracted to him. The hair, the way he walked, and the look in his eye just screamed confidence, and you found yourself not being able to look away from him. He gave you a smirk when his eyes found yours, and you immediately looked away as you felt embarrassment flow through your body.Â
Yeah, you definitely had to leave.
âDid you want to stay for a drink?â Kathy asked you, breaking you from your thoughts.
âWhat? Oh, no I should get going. Itâs late anââ
âWhoâs this?â the man asks Kathy as he approaches the two of you, interrupting your sentence. He removes the cigarette from his mouth and stuffs his hands in the pockets of his leather jacket.
âThis is my best friend,â Kathy looks up at him, âand sheâs off limits.â
The guy laughs at her statement. âArenât you going to introduce me?â he asks her, but heâs looking at you.Â
Kathy sighs as she rolls her eyes. âThis is Benny,â she tells you before looking back at him, âbut it doesnât really matter because youâre leaving, arenât you Benny.â
Well if Kathy doesnât seem to like him, then neither should you. Right?
âLoosen up, Kathy.â
Kathyâs about to say something else, but someone calls her name. She looks behind her before looking back at you Benny. She hesitates for a second before sending Benny a glare and walking away.
âIsnât it a little late for you to be out by yourself?â Benny asks, looking down at you and giving you this look. A look that gives you butterflies and makes you want to smile, but you resist. His gaze is intense.
âYes, which is why Iâm going home,â you tell him.
âDo you need a ride, Iâm on my way out,â he raises an eyebrow.Â
âNo thanks, I drove here,â you answer.
âHmm. Well I guess Iâll see you around then,â he smiles. Heâs not asking, but telling you.
âI guess so,â you say.Â
You donât know if youâre waiting for him to leave or if heâs waiting on you to make a move first, but you both just stand there for a moment. You donât know if itâs an awkward or comfortable silence between the two of you, but you canât handle his eyes on you anymore.
Benny watches you give him a small smile before turning around and exiting the bar. He smiles to himself as he follows you out the door, taking his cigarette and lighter out of his pocket. He watches as you get into the car you parked on the side of the street and drive off, still looking down the street, even when youâre no longer in eyesight.
You were different from him, and he wasnât sure if it was a good thing or bad thing, but he had to find out. You seemed so gentle and shy, unlike all the other girls that hang around at the bar. Benny felt drawn to you, even though the two of you had only talked for a couple of minutes. The fact that Kathy didnât want him around you only egged him on more.
He had to have you.
As youâre having a cup of coffee the next morning, you decide to look out one of your living room windows â something you always do. This time when you move the curtain aside, you almost drop the cup in your hand when you see Benny across the street. Heâs leaning against his bike having a cigarette, and youâre wondering how the hell he found you.
And how long has he been out there?
You set your cup down on your living room table before opening the front door. Benny notices the door open and just smirks when he sees you walking down your front steps. He gets up from his position on the bike and walks towards you, flicking his cigarette on the ground.
âWhat are you doing here?â you ask him once you reach the bottom of your steps, and Benny is standing on the sidewalk. You wrap your sweater tighter around your body as the morning breeze blows past you.
You give him a once-over now that heâs standing in front of you and man does he look good. Why does he look so good?Â
âKathy gave me your address,â he tells you casually.
Your eyes nearly pop out of their head because that is so unlike her. âAre you serious?â
âYeah,â he nods with amusement, âbut donât be mad at her, I kind of forced it out of her.â
âAnd youâre here becauseâŠ?â
âBecause I wanted to see you again. Iâve been thinking about you all night,â he tells you. Your heart drops and have to keep your jaw from hanging open because thereâs no way.
You wait a second before asking, âHow many girls have you said that too?âÂ
âOne,â he smiles at you as he slowly walks towards you. âYou.â
That was five weeks ago. You shouldnât have fallen for that cheesy line, but you did, which is how you now find yourself at this picnic.
âGlad my girl came,â he whispers in your ear as he takes a seat next to you. He smirks as he notices goosebumps popping up along your arm.
âYou two make me sick,â Kathy says, but thereâs no animosity in her voice. She canât help but smile as she looks between you and Benny because sheâs never seen him like this. Before you, sheâs never seen him soâŠin love. Itâs obvious that you have him wrapped around your finger.
Some of the other girls around the table have smiles across their faces too as they witness the interaction too because they can also see the difference in Benny.
âCome on, I want you to meet some of the guys,â he tells you and you nod. He grabs your hand in his as he walks you towards the group of guys he had been talking to when you arrived, feeling kind of nervous as you see all of their eyes on you.
As you approach, one of the older men looks down at your hand connected with his and a grin slowly grows on his lips. Heâs sitting at the table while the rest of them either stand around it, or sit on the table top.
âSo this is your girl huh, the one youâve been hiding from us?â the same guy asks.
Benny rolls his eyes. âThis is Johnny, heâs in charge of the club.â
âDamn right I am, but thatâs not important. Itâs nice to finally meet you, sweetheart,â Johnny says as he leans forward and holds his hand out for you to shake. You give him a small smile as you accept his hand.
âWeâre here too,â another guy says.
âThatâs Cockroach,â Johnny tells you before introducing the rest of them, and pointing out some of the others that are walking around. âAnd this is Danny, heâs not like everyone else. Heâs writing some kind of story or somethinâ.â
You turn around to see a guy with a camera hanging around his neck approaching the group, a half eaten cookie in his hand. âSomeone made cookies, you guys gotta try them.â
âAnd you didnât bring us any? Not cool man,â Cal says.
âDidnât you make those?â Benny looks down at you, nodding his head towards Dannyâs hand.
âUm, yeah.â
âYou bake?â Cockroach asks, and you nod.
âWell hand them over so we can try it before theyâre all gone,â Johnny says, and you give him a nod before heading back towards the table where the cookies are.
As youâre walking, some drunk guy stumbles his way in front of you, almost bumping into you. Thinking nothing of it since a lot of the men around are wasted, you ignore him and try to go around him. The man doesnât let you move far though as he grabs your arm and gives you a sly smile. Your face contorts in disgust and you try to jerk your arm away, but his grip is too tight.
âI havenât seen you around here before, little lady. Whatâs your name?â he slurs, the smell of alcohol filling your nostrils.
âNone of your business,â you tell him. You try to pull your arm away again, but the manâs grip only gets tighter. Your heartbeat picks up as you begin to panic, but thereâs too many people around so nothing can happen. Right?
âI like your shirt,â he gives the bottom of your shirt a little tug.
âStop,â you smack his hand away.
âCome on, donât be like that, gorgeous. Iâm just trying to be nice, the least you could do is tell me your name,â the man steps closer, getting into your face.
âLet me go,â you say sternly, once again trying to move.
âI think you need to be taught some manners,â the man glares at you.
From behind you, Benny sees the altercation going down and begins to come to your aid, but you do something that makes him stop in his tracks.
You smack the man hard, making his head turn to the side. His hand immediately lets go of you to reach up and touch his cheek, the handprint already starting to show.
A few people around who witnessed the scene gasp and laugh. A few whistles and hollers join in.
âYou bitch,â he says, his nostrils flaring.
âI guess we both need to be taught some manners,â you spit, no longer feeling shy since there are too many eyes on him.
Apparently, the man notices the stares too because he backs off, but not without giving you one last look.
âWell damn,â Cockroach says amongst the group.
âGot yourself a good one, Benny,â Johnny chuckles, his head falling back. That makes Bennyâs heart swell with pride.
âRemind me not to piss her off,â Cal says, his eyes wide.
Kathy comes up to check on you, but you tell her youâre okay. When you come back to the group with the container in your hand, everyoneâs looking at you with grins covering their face. Benny shoots you a wink, making your face heat up.
âThese arenât bad at all, you gotta bring these to all the meetings,â Johnny says after taking a bite of his cookie, the guys nodding in agreement.
Now, you donât know what you were thinking, but the idea of attending meetings hadnât crossed your mind at all.
You shouldâve known because a couple of days later when the club meets at the bar again, youâre right there with them, a few containers of baked goods in your hand. The men donât waste their time rushing towards you when you first step foot in the bar, making Benny shove his way through the crowd to make sure you donât get crushed. Surprisingly, though, you donât mind at all.
âYou better wait your turn,â one guy tells another whoâs trying to cut in front of him.
âFuck off,â the man answers and shoves the guy aside.
Benny grabs them both by the neck of their jackets and pulls them back.
âGentlemen, please, letâs not act like animals,â Johnny calls out.
Word gets out about how good your baking is â and your altercation with that drunk man â causing the bikers to have respect for you. Whenever you need something and Bennyâs not around, thereâs always someone that volunteers.
If you need a ride to work because your car broke down and Bennyâs not able to pick you up, Johnnyâs waiting right outside your door. If for some reason, someone dares to shoot their shot at you, it doesnât take long for the person to get thrown out of the bar. And when you get cold, several of the bikers offer their jackets to you, only for Benny to quickly throw his jacket over your shoulders.
Yeah, you could get used to this.

a/n - this was literally supposed to come out within a week of the release of twisters, but Iâve been gone for a month lol. I took so many breaks while writing this, so I'm not completely sure everything goes together, but it should. thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy :)

Youâve had a crush on Tyler ever since the day you met him, and to you, he was way out of your league. You also werenât the only one who felt this way; the amount of girls who showed up at empty fields just to meet Tyler was insane, but could you really blame them?
Tyler has so much charisma to the point where it seems like heâs attracted to everyone he meets.Â
When he stares directly into everyoneâs eyes, giving them his undivided attention, and flashes that charming smile of his, itâs kind of hard to tell who he actually is or isnât flirting with.Â
You, of course, were no different, so how the hell were you supposed to know that he liked you back?
Tyler was from Arkansas and he and his team decided to move to Oklahoma to storm chase several seasons ago. When he first showed up that day at the gas station with Boone filming his every move, you thought that he was just another adrenaline junky wanting to see a tornado up close for views. At the time you were a part of another group of chasers from Oklahoma, and since you had already made up your mind about him, you decided it was best to ignore him.
But, he made it hard.
You were surprised to see him walk over to your group and start chatting it up with a couple of your teammates. Turns out, they knew him from his youtube channel and were fans. Having him so close to you made it easier to check him out, which Tyler had noticed, but never called you out for it.
He came up to introduce himself to you, giving you a smile and taking off his sunglasses as he walked towards you.Â
âYouâre a long way from home,â you had told him â you had overheard him talking about his hometown in Arkansas.
âThis is my home now,â he had said.
He had pointed out that he was familiar with some of your work and began joking around with you so casually like he had known you his whole life. Unfortunately, you became immediately hooked.
You spent that night binging all of his videos and past live streams because you were oh so wrong about him.
That day led you to where you are now, a part of Tylerâs crew and regularly going out on chases for the fun of it.
âHow are you doinâ today, Bambi?â you hear Tyler walk up and come stand next to you as you adjust the lens on your camera. You, and all the other crews, were currently at a gas station preparing for the coming storm.
When he had first given you that nickname, you had told him it was basic, which resulted in him smirking and saying, âAinât nothing basic about you.â
You still think about that moment to this day.
âJust fine, Tyler, is there something I can help you with?â you answer, not taking your eyes off your camera.
âWhat, I canât talk to my favorite person?â he asks.Â
You can hear the smile in his voice, and when you finally turn around to look at him, you arenât surprised to see it spread across his face. âI thought Boone was your favorite person?â you tilt your head at him.
âI can have more than one favorite,â he says, nudging you with his soldier.
You raise your eyebrows and glance over at Boone, who was already looking in your direction with a knowing smile, and say, âI wonder how Boone would feel about that.â
Boone was Tylerâs best friend and had known you had a crush on Tyler the day you joined the team, and since then has repeatedly told you to confess to Tyler. Every time you tell him no, he just tells you yes because according to him Tyler feels the same way about you. It didnât take long for Dani and Lily to catch on either, but unlike Boone, they donât pressure you.
âNo need to start any trouble,â Tyler jokes, and you laugh at that. He opens his mouth to say something else, but stops when he hears the sound of more vehicles pull up.Â
The two of you turn around in time for you to see the crew exit their vehicles, including Javi and what you know to be Kate. Youâve never met Kate given the fact that she rarely decides to come back home to Oklahoma, but from what youâve heard sheâs really good with tornadoes.
You watch as the pair head towards you â Javi coming up to hug you while Kate goes to hug Tyler. Javi shoots you a look as he glances over at the two, and you quickly give his shoulder a shove, causing him to let out a laugh.
Javi is also amongst those who know you like Tyler. This crush is honestly starting to become a little pathetic.
Kate pulls away from Tyler and looks over at you with a kind smile, holding her hand out for you to shake. âHi, Iâm Kate. Iâve heard a lot about you from Javi, so itâs nice to finally meet you.â
According to Boone, Tyler couldnât keep his eyes off of Kate the last time she was here. At the time your migraines had started to come back so you had decided to sit the chase out, and good thing you did because there was no way you could handle watching that scene unfold.
You offer Kate a smile back as you shake her hand. âSame here, itâs nice to meet you.â
âWhat brings you city folks out here?â Tyler jokes.
Kate rolls her eyes at the nickname. âIâm doing the same thing the two of you are doing â storm chasing,â she replies as she looks out at the horizon at the clouds forming, her hair moving with the breeze.
âI thought you left Storm Par,â you say to Javi as you motion your head towards the white trucks
âWe did, but that doesnât mean we canât use their equipment. They have some really high tech stuff â we might as well put it to good use,â Javi explains. He then looks over at Kate and gives her a nudge. âNot like we need it since Kateâs here.â
Kate gives him a small smile at the compliment.
âWell, city girl, which direction are we going in today?â Tyler asks as Kate bends down to take a dandelion into her hand. Tyler takes his sunglasses off in order to get a better look at the sky.Â
Itâs a question Tyler usually asks you when itâs just the two of you in his truck with the rest of the crew following behind in their vehicles. You have no right to be jealous, but that doesnât stop the feeling of jealousy from growing in your chest. Choosing to ignore it, you take a deep breath and watch Kate, waiting for her answer.
You watch as a gust of wind blows the specks of dandelion out of her hand, causing Kate to look up into the sky at a dark funnel beginning to take form.
âThat one,â Kate points.
âAre you sure?â Tyler questions in a teasing manner, one of his eyebrows raising.
âIâll tell you later,â Kate replies, and then follows it with a question, â do ya mind if I ride with you?â
âNot at all,â Tyller answers, but then turns to look at you,â as long as my trusty navigator doesnât mind.â
What the hell are you supposed to say? No?Â
You donât even notice your tense jaw until you open your mouth to answer. âOf course not, you two go ahead,â you tell Tyler, looking between him and Kate as you offer up a smile.
âWell then itâs settled, letâs ride. Just make sure you donât get me lost,â Tyler smirks as he turns to walk towards his truck. Kate rolls her eyes as she follows him, a small smile on her lips.
Javi turns to you once the pair are out of earshot. âYou donât mind?â he repeats your words, not believing you for a second.
âI donât,â you give him a shrug as you begin walking towards his Storm Par truck. Javi follows right behind you, his hands stuffed into his pockets.
âMhm. You look like you were about to pop a blood vessel,â Javi lets out a laugh.
You stop in your tracks and turn to face him. âWas it that obvious?â you ask, your eyes wide.
âRelax, Iâm kidding,â his smile drops once he sees the look on your face. You release a breath and continue walking. Once the two of you are in the safety of his truck, Javi asks, âyou really like him, huh?â
âUnfortunately,â you huff out. âIâm slowly trying to get over it, though.â
âWhy?â
âBecause it's a useless little schoolgirl crush, and itâs not like heâs actually going to like me back, so thereâs no point in continuing to suffer.â
Javi just hums in response, starting the vehicle and placing his hands on the steering wheel. Then he glances over at you, âI say you should hold out, whatâs the worst that can happen?â
Before you can answer, Tylerâs truck pulls up beside you guys on Javiâs side of the car. Tyler leans forward to look over at the two of you before moving his finger in a swirling motion and driving off.
âThatâs your man, huh?â Javi gives you a questioning look, his tone light.
You let out a small laugh, âJust drive the damn truck, Javi.â
The chase was eventful as always. Kateâs instincts were right and led the group right into the tornadoâs path, where Tyler stopped to anchor his truck. The rest of you hung back as you watched Tyler shoot fireworks into the eye of the storm.Â
Even though you had some distance on them, you could still hear the hoots and hollers coming from their spot in the field. The group of tornado watchers that had decided to join the chase got out of their vehicles to join the celebration.
Javi looks over at you and shakes his head in fake disappointment, resulting in you rolling your eyes.
After the chase everyone decides to go out for drinks before heading to the motel. From your spot at the bar next to Javi, you can see Tyler in the back of the bar throwing darts with Kate.
âYou know, you should blink every once in a while,â you hear a voice say in your ear. You jump and turn around to see Boone standing there with a grin and a beer in one of his hands.
âI donât think she cares at this point, she has been ignoring me all night for that redneck,â Javi jokes.
You scoff, âNo, I havenât.â
âOh really? What was I just talking about then?â Javi looks at you with his eyebrows raised. Boone joins him and turns his attention back to you.
Your mouth opens, but you quickly close it when you realize you donât have an answer. You let out a sigh as you drop your head into your hands. âIâm sorry,â you say in defeat.
âDonât worry about it,â Javi says, âI just canât wait for the two of you to finally get together so this can end.â
âYou and me both, brother,â Boone says, clinking his beer bottle against Javiâs.
As the night starts to come to an end, you say your goodbyes to the group before heading back to the motel. It was just across the street, and the majority of the people in the area were tornado chasers, so you had no problem walking back by yourself.
After making your way up the stairs and into your room, you decide on taking a quick shower before heading off to bed.
When you get out, youâre about to turn the lights and the tv off so you can go to sleep when you hear a knock on your door. Assuming it was Boone, Dani, or even Lily, you open the door without hesitation, only to reveal Tyler on the other side.
He stands in front of you, his hands in his pockets as he looks down at you with a gentle smile and his clothes still on from the day. âHey, there. You left without sayinâ goodbye.â
âWell I told Boone, Javi, Dani, and Lily goodbye, so technically I did,â you tell him. A gust of wind from the night breeze blows through the doorway, causing you to cross your arms over your chest.
âOuch, I see Iâm not important anymore,â Tyler says.
You let out a small laugh. âIâm pretty sure you donât need me to tell you youâre important.â
âYou know I do,â he says.
You let out a small hum in response before asking, âSo whereâs Kate?â
âIâm actually not sure, last time I saw her, I think she was talking with Javi,â he answers, his eyebrows furrowing as he glances back at the parking lot. Then he shrugs and says, âI had to leave her since she was kicking my ass in darts so who cares.â
âDidnât enjoy having your ego bruised, huh?â you joke, and Tyler rolls his eyes.
âHey, I donât have a problem with gettinâ beat by a woman,â he chuckles.
âWhatever you say,â you smile at him. âWas there something else you wanted? I was just about to go to bed.â
Tyler clears his throat. âUh yeah, there is actually,â he tells you as he stands up straight. You raise your eyebrows as you wait for him to continue. âI was wonderinâ, well hopinâ, you would want to do somethinâ. You know, just the two of us,â he says.
Is he - No, letâs not jump to conclusions.
âDonât we always?â you question.
âWell, yeah, but I meantâŠyou know,â Tyler begins to scratch the back of his neck, and glances down at the ground, âLike a date.â
You blink. And blink again. And again.
Then when Tyler notices your silence, he adds, âBut I totally understand if you donât want to.â
You blink again. âLike seriously?â you finally ask. Your eyebrows are furrowed, still not completely believing him.
âYes,â he says.
âOkay,â you nod, a small smile starting to form on your lips.
Okay? Thatâs all you have to say?
âYeah?â Tyler perks up, and you nod again.
âYeah,â you confirm.
Tyler chuckles. âYou know, I donât know why I was nervous. I already knew you had a crush on me.â
You choke on your spit as you give him an incredulous look. âYou what?â
âYeah, and you know I figured you would catch on to me by now, but I wasnât sure if you were and just ignoring me or what,â he smirks.
âAnd how exactly was I supposed to catch on?â you ask, adding air quotes at the end.
âIâve been flirting with you this whole time,â he tells you like itâs obvious.
âTyler, I donât know if youâve noticed, but you flirt with anyone,â you tell him.
âNo, I donât,â Tylerâs face twists up, and you give him a look. He thinks for a second before saying, âWell, yeah, I guess I do. Kind of.â
âWhat the hell do you mean âkind ofâ?â
âI feel like my serious flirting is different from my usual charming self,â he shoots you a wink.
âNo. No itâs not Tyler. Your usual charming self made me think you like Kate,â you tell him, causing his eyebrows to raise in amusement.
WellâŠmaybe you shouldâve kept that last part to yourself.
âYou thought I liked Kate?â he smiles, leaning in a little bit more.
You roll your eyes and decide not to answer. Tyler takes your silence as a greenlight to keep talking shit.
âWere you jealous?â
You scoff as your eyes widen, âhow dare you!â
âYou were!â he exclaims, your reaction giving you away.
Feeling your face begin to heat up and wanting to hide from the embarrassment you back up to be able to close the door in his face. âGoodnight Tyler,â you mumble, fully ready to be alone once again, but of course Tyler puts his hand up to stop you.
âOh come on, Bambi, donât shy up on me now,â he smirks, going back to leaning on the door with his palm still on the door.
âSays the one who got nervous to ask me out,â you point out, causing Tyler to laugh. âGoodnight,â you repeat, and once again you try to close the door, but youâre met with resistance.
Tylerâs laughter dies down. âAlright, alright, Iâll stop,â he tells you. âCan I come in?â
âI donât know,â you reply, giving him a stern look.
âCome on, I promise I wonât tease you anymore.â
You sigh. âFine.â
Tyler thanks you as you step aside to make room for him to enter the room, but as he walks past you, he says, âBut Kate? Really?âÂ
Yeah, he isnât going to let this go anytime soon.
