 Sanguine Whispers.
 Sanguine Whispers.
 Sanguine Whispers.

The silence in the castle was interrupted once again, but this time it wasn’t a whisper from the forest. It was a distant echo, barely perceptible, resonating through the stone walls. Something inside the castle had moved, something ancient, something that hadn’t been touched in centuries. You stopped dead in your tracks, your senses sharpened by hunger and the growing sense of danger.

Yuta watched you silently, his ghostly form floating beside you. “Did you hear that too?” he whispered, his voice heavy with concern.

You nodded, your eyes scanning the darkness that enveloped the halls. It wasn’t a presence from the forest that was calling you this time. It was something deeper, something buried in the very foundations of the structure. The echo resounded again, louder, like a faint heartbeat from the bowels of the castle. You didn’t know what it was, but something inside you urged you to follow it.

Without a word, you began to move. Every step you took made the echo intensify, as if it had been waiting for you, calling from the depths. Yuta stayed close, watching cautiously, but he didn’t stop you. He knew something had changed.

You descended the stairs to the lower levels of the castle, where the darkness was almost tangible, denser and more oppressive. The old chandeliers that once illuminated these corridors had long since gone out, leaving only twisted shadows crawling on the walls. Each step you took made the echo louder, as if you were getting closer to the source of a mystery that had remained sealed since you died.

“This isn’t a good idea,” Yuta muttered, his voice tense. “Whatever is down here… it should remain asleep.”

But the hunger inside you clouded your judgment. Every sound, every creak of the stones, made the desire to know more grow. Finally, you reached a door, massive and wooden, cracked and covered in cobwebs, sealed with heavy iron chains. An ancient symbol was carved into the surface, one you vaguely recognized from the old texts you had read in life.

“This place…” your voice was a whisper, and your fingers brushed over the symbol. “I knew it, once. This is the heart of the castle.”

“You knew it and forgot for a reason,” Yuta warned, though he made no move to stop you.

With titanic effort, you pushed the door, the chains groaning before giving way with a screech that echoed down the hallway. The echo was now deafening, as if the entire castle was preparing for the awakening of something that had been asleep for too long. On the other side of the door, a chilling cold hit you, as though the air itself was alive with ancient, dark magic.

The room you entered was small, barely a hidden chamber, but at its center was a stone pedestal, covered in dust and mold. On top, an object glowed faintly under the moonlight streaming through a crack in the ceiling. A reliquary, ancient and powerful, emanated an energy that made you stop in your tracks.

“This isn’t meant for us,” Yuta whispered, but curiosity overwhelmed you.

You approached slowly, feeling the relic’s energy vibrate in your veins, an ancient magic that drew you like a moth to a flame. You knew, deep down, that this artifact held answers, perhaps even the key to freeing yourself from the curse. But you also knew that all power came at a price.

When your fingers brushed the cold surface of the reliquary, a wave of images flooded your mind. Fragments of the past: the day of your death, the castle under siege, Yuta falling beside you, and then something else… something you didn’t remember. A broken promise, an ancient betrayal sealed in blood.

You released the reliquary abruptly, your hands trembling. The echo in the chamber suddenly ceased, and silence returned, as oppressive as before. Yuta floated beside you, his gaze fixed on you, though he said nothing.

“We’re not here by accident,” you finally said, your voice breaking with the revelation. “This castle… this curse. All of this is the consequence of something we did. Something I forgot.”

The weight of your words lingered in the air, sinking into the cold stone like a confession long overdue. Yuta’s eyes darkened, his ethereal form shifting slightly, as if the memories you had stirred were attempting to resurface from the depths of his own forgotten past.

“What do you mean?” His voice was barely a whisper, as though speaking louder would disturb something fragile, something better left untouched.

You struggled to find the answer, but the relic’s energy still thrummed in your veins, making your head spin. The images had been disjointed, flashes of a life before, but the betrayal, that feeling of shattered trust, stood out as vividly as your hunger. You couldn’t shake the weight of it, pressing down on you like the chains that had once sealed the door.

“Before we died,” you murmured, running a hand through your hair, “there was something—an oath. Something binding us here, to this place. And we broke it.”

Yuta’s brow furrowed, his spectral form flickering like a flame caught in a draft. “But what could we have done? I don’t remember making any oaths. My last memory is… is…” His voice trailed off, haunted by the same fragmented images that haunted you.

“The siege,” you finished for him, feeling the tension rise like bile in your throat. “We fought. We died. But there’s more. The castle—it wasn’t just our home. It was something else. A vault, maybe, or a prison.” Your voice trembled as you spoke, and with each word, the memories seemed to edge closer, clawing their way out of the abyss.

Yuta drifted closer, his gaze penetrating yours with a strange intensity. “What did we do? What were we guarding?”

Your heart pounded as you looked back at the reliquary, glowing faintly on the pedestal. It was as if the answers were right there, hovering just out of reach, but every time you grasped at them, they slipped away like smoke between your fingers. You shook your head, frustrated by the gnawing hunger, both for blood and for the truth.

“I don’t know. But it’s tied to this place. And to us.”

Before you could say anything else, a low, guttural sound broke through the silence—a groan from deep within the castle walls, as though the very structure was awakening with you. The floor beneath your feet trembled, the vibrations rippling through the stones like a pulse.

Yuta tensed, his form flickering as he glanced around. “We need to leave. Now.”

But you stood frozen in place, the weight of the past pressing down on you. Whatever you had unleashed, it was too late to stop it now. The chains on the door, the ancient symbol, the reliquary—they had all been part of a seal, keeping something buried, forgotten. And now, you had broken it.

The sound grew louder, a deep rumbling from below, as though the castle’s foundations were shifting. Dust and debris began to fall from the ceiling, and the crack letting in moonlight widened, spilling cold beams onto the stone floor.

“No,” you whispered, shaking your head. “I can’t leave. This is where it all started. If I don’t find out what we did… I’ll never be free of this curse.”

Yuta’s eyes flared with frustration, but he didn’t argue. He knew better than anyone the depth of your determination, the way the hunger twisted your sense of reason. Still, he couldn’t help but plead with you one last time. “This isn’t just about the past anymore. Whatever’s down here… it’s waking up.”

“I know,” you said, and even as you spoke, the ground beneath you buckled slightly, the tremors growing stronger. “But I need to know.”

With a deep breath, you stepped forward again, closer to the reliquary. The energy around it pulsed, vibrating through your bones, and for a moment, you hesitated, unsure if you could handle whatever truth it held. But then, with a steady hand, you reached for it once more.

The moment your fingers brushed the cold surface, a searing pain shot through your body. Your vision blurred, and the images returned—clearer this time, sharper. You saw yourself, standing in this very room centuries ago, Yuta at your side, both of you alive, your hearts still beating. The castle was under siege, flames licking at the walls outside, and you were surrounded by shadows—figures cloaked in darkness, faces hidden.

A deal had been struck. A promise made.

You saw yourself kneel before the reliquary, speaking words you didn’t recognize but somehow knew had sealed your fate. Yuta had been there, silent, watching, and though you couldn’t hear his voice, you felt the weight of his disapproval. He had warned you, even then.

And then—betrayal. The shadows turned on you, the promise broken. Blood spilled on the stone floor, your own blood, mixed with Yuta’s. The curse had been born in that moment, binding your souls to the castle for eternity.

The vision shattered, and you staggered back, gasping for breath. Your heart raced, and your head throbbed with the weight of the revelation. The tremors in the castle had stopped, but the air around you was thick with magic, dark and ancient.

Yuta hovered beside you, his face pale, his form more solid than before, as if the truth had given him strength. “What did you see?”

You looked up at him, eyes wide with the weight of the knowledge you now carried. “We made a deal. We were supposed to protect something… but we failed. And now… now it’s coming for us.”

The silence that followed was deafening, more oppressive than ever before.

Listen, you can’t write perfect characters. No one cares about reading about someone who never screws up. Your characters need to make bad decisions, they need to hurt people, and they need to be hurt. They should doubt themselves and do things they regret. That’s where the magic happens, when they’re flawed, messy, and human. People don’t fall in love with characters because they’re flawless; they fall in love because those characters remind them of the chaos inside themselves. So don’t be afraid to put your characters through hell. Only then will their journey mean something.

 Sanguine Whispers.
 Sanguine Whispers.

The grand hall was a maze of shadows and moonlight, the towering windows cloaked in thick layers of dust. The castle had once been majestic, but now its once-regal splendor lay buried beneath centuries of decay. The air was cold, stagnant, and hauntingly still, save for the faint creaks and whispers of time long forgotten. The thick forest outside encircled the structure, impenetrable and wild—no one dared venture near the rumors of curses, death, and the unnatural.

You paced the hall, your hunger gnawing at your senses like a beast long starved. Each step echoed through the hollow silence, and the hunger was a dull ache now, constant and unbearable. You had tried to resist, to maintain some semblance of your dignity as a former condesa. But the hunger was consuming you.

A sigh drifted from the corner of the room. Yuta. His form—ghostly, faint, almost transparent—watched you with those familiar eyes, forever loyal, even in death. He had been your most trusted guard in life, the one who stood by your side when the world crumbled around you. You had died together, slain in a bloody conquest, yet here you remained, trapped in the castle that had become both your prison and your grave.

"I can hear your stomach growling from here," he said, voice tinged with humor, though the flicker of concern did not escape you.

You paused, turning toward him, lips curled in frustration. "It’s not something I can control."

Yuta tilted his head, floating closer, his form more translucent in the pale moonlight. "Since you're so whiny and hungry, I'll let you drink my blood this once. But only this once!"

You froze at his words. His offer lingered in the air, thick with unspoken tensions, and it took all your strength to suppress the dark excitement stirring inside you. His blood… you had once sworn never to drink from those who had served you so loyally. But that was another life. You weren’t the same person anymore, were you?

"Did you really forget that you're a ghost and basically transparent?" Your tone was bitter, but underneath the sarcasm was the sharp edge of desperation.

Yuta blinked. “Oh. Oops.”

For a moment, there was silence, the weight of your shared history pressing down on the both of you. You couldn’t drink from him—not in this form—but the hunger, the longing for something beyond this haunting, gnawed at you relentlessly. You stepped closer to him, the warmth of his presence faint but achingly familiar.

"I remember… what it was like to be alive," you whispered, almost to yourself. "The blood, the warmth. It was everything."

His eyes softened. "You haven't changed much, you know. Still stubborn, still… you."

A bitter laugh escaped you, dry and hollow. "Except I’m a monster now."

He reached out, though his hand passed through yours like mist. "We both are."

The night pressed in around you, thick with the weight of the forest that circled the castle like a predator waiting to pounce. You could feel its presence, lurking just beyond the stone walls, its tendrils creeping ever closer. The rumors about the castle were true, after all. The dark magic that had cursed this place also bound you here—two souls, tied to the past and the horrors that had unfolded.

Yuta hovered beside you, his presence a strange comfort in the suffocating loneliness. His ghostly form flickered as if the darkness itself threatened to consume him, but his eyes—those steadfast, haunted eyes—never wavered. You wondered if you looked as lost as he did, though you had long given up on seeing your reflection in any mirror.

"You’re thinking about it again," Yuta said, his voice breaking the stillness, his tone gentle.

Your gaze shifted to him, but you didn’t respond immediately. How could you explain the gnawing ache inside you—the hunger that went beyond blood, beyond flesh? It was the hunger for life itself, for the days when you had been more than just a walking corpse, more than this cursed creature trapped in an endless night.

"I don't know what you're talking about," you lied, voice strained.

"You're a terrible liar," he chuckled softly, floating closer until the chill of his form brushed against your skin. "I can feel it… your regret, your guilt. You think this is your fault, don’t you?"

You clenched your fists, the sharp sting of your nails digging into your palms. "I don’t have time for guilt. I need… I need to feed."

The admission tasted bitter on your tongue. You had been a condesa once, proud and powerful, feared and respected. But now… now, you were little more than a monster, a creature of darkness driven by base instincts. And yet, Yuta stayed by your side, even in death.

"I would've given my life for you," he said, voice low, almost a whisper. "I did give my life for you. And I’d do it again."

"Don’t," you snapped, eyes narrowing. "Don’t pretend like this is some kind of noble sacrifice. We died, Yuta. We lost everything. And now we’re stuck here, forever."

A heavy silence followed your words, but the unspoken truth hung between you like a noose. You had failed him, failed everyone. Your once-loyal guard had perished at your side, and you couldn’t protect him, couldn’t protect your people. The weight of it all bore down on you, suffocating.

Yuta’s form flickered again, and for a moment, you saw the man he had been—solid, warm, alive. His face, pale but strong, eyes glinting with determination even in the face of death. He had always been like that—unshakable, unwavering. And it made your chest ache in a way that had nothing to do with hunger.

"It wasn’t your fault," he said quietly, stepping closer, his hand once more trying to reach out to you, though it slipped through the air like smoke.

Your breath caught in your throat as his presence enveloped you, cold and intangible but somehow comforting. You longed to feel his touch, to know that you weren’t entirely alone in this nightmare. But all you had were shadows and memories.

"Yuta… I’m starving," you whispered, voice trembling. "I can’t… I can’t control it anymore."

He gave you a sad smile, his form fading slightly, as if the effort to stay in this realm was draining him. "Then let me help you. Find another way… until we figure this out."

Your jaw tightened. The hunger was unbearable, the ache deep and raw. It wasn’t just blood you craved—it was life itself. And yet… looking at him now, standing there with that quiet resolve, you knew you couldn’t do it. You couldn’t take what little he had left.

"I’ll wait," you said, though every instinct in your body screamed against it. "But not forever."

He nodded slowly, his form steadying as he met your gaze. "We’ll figure this out. Together."

You didn’t respond. Instead, you turned toward the grand windows of the hall, the moonlight filtering in through the cracks, illuminating the crumbling stones and forgotten history of the castle. The forest outside rustled, the wind carrying whispers of ancient things—things that were watching, waiting.

And so, you stood there, the hunger gnawing at your insides, your body tense with the need to feed. But you would wait, for him. Just a little longer.
