A plant that found a space for itself on the street; this Lunaria annua (honesty, grandpa's specs, money in both pockets, moon seed, satin pod, silver plate, silver dollar) will have seeded into the edge of the path. As a hardy annual or biennial the plants are always moving around producing purple flowers in late spring which are followed by flat, round, silvery seed pods.

An early spring flowering shrub Stachyurus chinensis 'Celina' (Chinese stachyurus) has a spreading habit with purplish young branches that are covered with hanging racemes of pale yellow cup-shaped flowers before the leaves emerge.

Perfect for a container in a shady place the perennial Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' (Siberian bugloss) provides large, heart-shaped silver leaves edged and veined with green. It produces sprays of small blue flowers in spring.

The umbrella-like clusters of Daucus carota (wild carrot, Queen Anne’s lace) flowers are usually white and often have one purple or red flower in the centre. There are pink and purple forms grown in gardens. These clusters of flowers fold inwards, becoming concave, when they turn to seed.

This mature Sambucus nigra (elder) tree was covered with beautifully fragrant flowers and these will be followed by bunches of black berries. These trees tend to have a small trunk with few branches.

In my friend’s beautiful garden a traditional double red Paeonia lactiflora cultivar was flowering. These are long lived plants and grow best in a fertile soil that is moist but well-drained in a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. They are often found in old cottage gardens.
