I really don't understand everyone praising the El/Liesel dynamic in The Golden Enclaves, admittedly I only read The Last Graduate once and don't remember a whole lot about Liesel in that book, but damn does TGE make her look like an asshole.
And it's not about the 'casual sex' thing, it's actually the fact that it's not 'casual' and Liesel literally only has sex with El when (1) they're going to NYC to meet Orion's parents and discuss their plan to mercy-kill him and all the other people Patience ate and (2) when El thinks Orion is worse than dead. Both times, El is feeling super awful, and Liesel takes advantage of this in order to 'get her hooks into her' aka for the express purpose of making El attached/beholden to her. Liesel wasn't having sex with El just to make her feel better or even for fun. IDK why people act in this circumstance like sex is the literal only thing you can do to comfort/emotionally support someone. Liesel never offered any other kind of comfort because as she said to Aadhya, she sees El as a powerful thing which she needs to control. It's an established thing in the universe that Liesel uses sex/sexual attraction as a means of control, that's why she makes her own makeup in the Scholomance even though it's a risk.
Liesel wasn't even mentioned in the first book because she was never El's actual friend, she never cared about El when she was still seen as just another 'loser' kid who was socially rejected all her life. It's made pretty clear that the only other students who actually care about El are Orion, Aadhya, and Liu.
I like problematic characters as much as the next girl, but I don't see the point in pretending Liesel Never Did Anything Wrong and El/Liesel Are The Healthiest Example Of Casual Sex/FWB Ever. I understand why Liesel is the way she is with the tragic backstory and all but what is the point of woobifying her? Liesel is an interesting and very realistic character. Just let her be a little fucked up. (I forgot, people can never let the blonde pretty mean girl (see: Chloe of Miraculous Ladybug) be just a little fucked up).
I ❤️ self-loathing characters, characters who struggle with monstrosity (either fearing or embracing it), characters who are so lonely, who have a gaping hole in their chest, who bottle up & repress their feelings, who claw their way up & have ambitions, who fall down & lose everything, who search for identity & purpose yet can’t see themselves outside of what others want from or expect of them, who are hurt & hurt others, who long & grieve, who lie & pretend. characters who are messy & flawed & human
just finished The Golden Enclaves... one thing is bugging me.... so is Orion Lake's hair actually silver? I always thought that was weird from the very first time his hair was mentioned and possibly an early sign/foreshadowing that something extra supernatural was going on with him. Is he super platinum blond, super prematurely grey, or just born actually silver haired like LOTR elves can be?
which, given that El's full name is Galadriel, perhaps that last guess is close to the truth and it is a LOTR reference also.
i’ll never understand people who can’t make fun of their faves a little. like yes i love this character and would defend them to my grave but also they’re stupid sometimes and they do dumb things and imma make fun of them for it
