The thing that has been vexing me lately about Fantasy Historical Sexism (vs the real kind) is how it flattens out actual historical politics - particularly in the high medieval period, sexism against female rulers was a tool for people who were already their political opponents for political reasons, rather than a common primary motivator for contesting inheritance. Fairly large numbers of women in medieval Western Europe inherited estates ‘suo jure’, in their own right - not even getting into things like the political power of abbesses (who could often be those same women in retirement, or their sisters or daughters or mothers).

Historical fantasy tends to be so obsessed with having One Special Woman Who Is Fighting Sexism that it actually erases from the popular conception of history the women who were already there, and the complexity of their lives, and it’s just…very…dull.

A screenshot of a post by tumblr user the-memedaddy. The post starts with a screenshot of another Tumblr post, which consists of an image of Fred from Scooby Doo with text and arrows next to him pointing out that his collar and pants are the same blue, the same image edited so that his white shirt is off and his collar and pants are part of the same one-piece jumpsuit, which is sleeveless with buttons, a comment by tumblr user strudelkaboodle that reads “delete this.” Below it is the-memedaddy’s comment “meirl.” Several replies follow: Reply 1: otterlyrambling: I mean. Cartoon design is based off of 70s/80s fashion. So, it’s not wrong. It’s rather likely. Below their comment are multiple images of people from the 70s/80s in similar jumpsuits. Reply 2: spiffylindster: I’d like to add dickey collars for consideration. Below their comment is an image of a blue dickey collar, which is a shirt collar with only the top of a button-up shirt, cutting off around the chest. It has four buttons, no sleeves, and thin straps that go under the arms. Below the image is a crossed-out comment by the same person that reads: I can picture him having an entire drawer devoted to an assortment of these, right next to his drawer full of ascots. Reply 3: everystarstorm: a screenshot of Fred falling with a white undershirt and blue pants on. His usual long-sleeved, white shirt is falling near him. There’s no blue shirt visible on the inside, and the blue collar is at the top.
The reply reads: May I present this image from Legend of the Vampire? Reply 4: synille: a screenshot of Fred from behind. He has scratch marks on the back of his white shirt, revealing blue beneath it. Their reply, in big, red text, reads: what is the FUCKING truth. Reply 5: meckamecha: He has multiple outfits that all look identical while having completely different construction

I wanted to reblog this but the images from the original are gone
