anfheirmeorieacht le pór crossantach-ag inilt / extensive farming with crossbreeds-grazing
tá a lán slí fánas táirgeadh a comead ag braith ar a pór agus úsaid. de gnáth do fánas crossantach cóta-catach, cros idir pór mar-muice (por feoil) agus caorín bán dearg (por ollan) cuirtear iad ag inilt de bharr gur pór déanach-abaí iad, agus deannan siad níos fear i bunaigh anfheirmeorieacht.
there are many ways to raise production breed fauns depending on breed and use. typically for curlcoat crosses, a hybrid breed of the swinelike (meat breed) and the heatherhorn (fiber breed) they are grazed since they're a late maturing breed, and are more profitable in an extensive farming setup
-Dearfach agus diúltach de ag chuir fánas amach ag init/positives and negatives of grazing fauns-
rudaí dearfach faoi ag chuir iad ag inilt na spreagadh intinne agus sócialta ó timpeallacht oscailte agus garbh, agus is fedir leo aiste bia níos cothromaithe a ithe le níos mo píosi crua-earraí.
ach na rudaí diúltach ná baol níos airde de galar agus gortú, go hairithe má nach úsáidtear srianadh seadán no instealladh orthú. fresin tá ort a crúbanna a seicáil gach lá agus iad a barr gach 4-6 seactain chun féacant amach do ionfhábhtú no gortú ó an talamh gear ar an lionadh talun.
the positives of letting fauns graze are mental and social enrichment from an open and rough environment, and they can have a more balanced diet with a grater variety of plastics and hardware pieces.
the negatives to this are higher risks of disease and injury, especially if forms of parasite control or vaccines are not used. hoof problems are also extremely common so it's good practice to check their feet daily and have their hooves trimmed every 4-6 weeks.
-titheacht/housing-
rud maith faoi crossantach cóta-catach na níl trealamh spesílta ag teastáil chun iad a comead slán. má tá tú ag tabhart a MPP dóbh díreach on lionadh talun níl ach scioból le tí mar easair chun iad a chuir isteach sa lá. bí cúarimach gur nach bhuil móran solas ligithe isteach sa scioból ionnas go nach gortíon siad a súile. faoi tá pictúir de scioból casta do fánas cóta-catach.
the good thing about curlcoat crosses is that they don't need special equipment. if they're getting their MMP directly from the landfill then the only housing they need is a barn with straw bedding to keep them inside during the day. just make sure too much light can't get in so the fauns don't hurt their eyes. below is a picture of a high-end curlcoat barn.

de gnáth tugtear pellead dirach ribh iad a chuir amach no dirach tar eist iad a chuir isteach, tugtar e ag na amanta seo ionnas gur fedir leis na oibreoiri fecant ar ce mead a bhuil an fanas ag ithe. cuirtear barra thar agus timpeall na trach ionnas go nach trodion na fanas le haigh spas no bia.
normally they're given concentrate either just before being let out or right after going back to the barn, this is so it's easier to keep an eye on how much they eat. bars are in front of the toughs so they don't fight over food or space.
-sconsa agus conas iad a comead isteach/fences and keeping them in-
ba choir go bhuil sconsa leictrach chuithe suas chun iad a comead isteach, is fedir leo gnath sconsa a brise, go hairithe ma bhris siad amach ribhe. bi cinte agus seicail go bhuil na sconsa ceart, suas, agus ar suil gach la. nuair a ligtear iad amach dean cinte go bhuil siad faoi mhaoirseacht le go leoir oibreoiri ann ma teann aon rud mi-cheart
electric fences are the most reliable at keeping the fauns in, fauns can learn how to break non-electrified fences, especially if they see another one doing it. make sure to check that the fences are intact, on and working daily. while the fauns are grazing make sure that they're supervised by a team of workers in case something goes wrong.
-Uisce near atá siad ag init/water access while grazing-
de gnath tugtear uisce dobh i basin mor deanta as coincréit ionnas gur nach fedir na fanas e a bogadh no leim isteach ann. cathig an uisce a bheith athrithe gach la agus an basin a bheith glanta amach gach seactain. is fedir leat forlíonadh rahnduil a chuir sa uisce fresin, go hairithe ma nach bhuil ro-mead sighas pleastach no chuir amu bia sa lionadh talun.
fauns should be given water from a large basin made of concrete, this is to prevent them from breaking/tipping the basin, and it should be too tall for the fauns to get into. the water must be chaged daily and the basin cleaned fully once a week. you can add minerals to their water too, especally if there's little variety of plastics or food waste on the landfill.

-Slí ais díleá a tabhart/providing digestive aid-
i socru dianfeirmeoracht, mar socru do mar-muice feoil no socru do caorin ban dearg, is fedir line mor de dáileoir ais dilea a chuir sios, ach ar lionadh talun nil e sin réadúil. nil ach cupla chin ag teastail mas fedir le na fanas bogadha timpeall (impeall daileoir amhain do 10 fanas). ta na daileoir ais dilea lionadh talun uathoibríoch, agus lionon siad gach uair a olann an fanas as, an rud diúltach faoi na daileoir seo na ta baol nios airde do gortu baigh de bharr go bhuil an barr oscailte in ionnad mer sine.
in an intensive farming setup, like a rack for swinelikes or heatherhorns, you could afford to have a long line of digestive aid dispensers, but on a landfill this type is not feasable. you only need a small handfull of singular dispensers since the fauns are able to move around (normally 1 dispenser to 10 fauns). landfill digestive aid dispensers are automatic and fill back up every time a faun drinks, the one negative thing about this type of dispenser is that there's a higher risk of splash leisions since they have an open top, instead of a nipple/drinker design like a set-rack model.

pictuir ar cle: fanas crossantach cota-catach ag ol o daileoir ais dilea
pictured left: a curlcoat faun drinking from a landfill digestive aid dispenser
pictuir ar dheis: galar gortu baigh, galar a fastear as ionfhabhtú agus lobh craiceann, fiochan agus nios deanai cnamh, o gortu doigh o ais dilea, is coitianta i fanas og
pictured right: splash leisions, a condition that develops from infection and eventual decay of the skin, tissue and in later stages bones and teeth, from a burn caused by digestive aid burning the skin, most common in younger fauns
-Cosc ar galar agus seadán/disease and parasite prevention-
ba choir gur tugtear a instealladh do teiteanas, heirpéas, agus bruitíneach (ta na chinn seo go lear pairt de an instealladh 8 i 1) gach uair ata siad ri-racithe. na lig aon daoine gan chead ar an áitreabh ionnas gur nach fedir le galar virach a bheith scapithe timpeall, agus gur bhuil na oibreoiri suas chun data le a instealladh. bi ag scrúdaigh na fanas gach uair a feictear iad, feicant amach le haigh sintom galar agus chuir iad chun leighas/cuir iad ar coraintín. feicant amach le haigh gortu agus chuir antaiseipteach ar aon gearradh a feicean tu. is fedir cre diatomasach a chuir ina easair chun chir cosc ar dreancaid agus chuir pudar garleoig ina bia chun cosc ar cuilleoig.
make sure that fauns are vaccinated against tetanus, herpes and measles (all included in an 8 in one vaccine) every time theyre re-racked. don't allow anyone on the premises without permision in case they're carrying any viral diseases, and make sure all workers are up to date with their vaccines. look out for any syntoms of disease in the fauns whenever you see them and medicate/ quarentien any sick ones. look out for signs of injury and spray antiseptic on any wounds you find. you can also add diatomaceous earth to their bedding to prevent lice and add garlic powder to their food to prevent flies.

ach chun na seadan a maru as a corp, chuirtear iad ag snamh i leacht dipeáil chun beagnach gach sighas galar a maru ar a craiceann. deantear e seo gach dara seactan mar piocann siad suas go leoir galar agus feicid ar an lionadh talun
but to kill topical infections and parisites completely, they need to be dunked in dipping liquid every 2 weeks, they can pick up a lot of infections and bugs from the landfill.
-slanteachas na oibreoiri/work safety-
nuair ata tu ag comead suil ar na fanas agus iad a bheith cuirte amach ag innilt, fan i grupa agus gur bhuil smachtín eallaigh, is fedir leat tastil i veain ionnas gur nach bhuil tu ro-congarach leo. na bi ag labhsail na fanas gan chead no fath, agus comead suas le do instealladh
when supervising the fauns while they graze, stay in a group and have a cattle prod on you at all times, make sure to travel in a van so you dont have to get too close to them. do not pet or handle them without medical need, and keep up with your vaccinations

Tentatively uploading all of this spec evo stuff I did today and yesterday. I wanted them to be less humanoid and if nothing else I think I've achieved that.
I've probably been messing with this species and its world for like a decade, but I keep reworking it and so much of that work just sits in old sketchbooks and google docs. They have a very special place in my heart <3
Oh yeah also the Mormon pre/during/afterlife is there too?? No relation to anything else.

Some older ideas from previous years. They kind of have maintained that general look for a while. Not a huge fan of some of this anymore like what the hell is that massive "scavenger"??
Stab-sex is kinda tight still if you ask me.

animal husbandry blunders
droch-fearachas
Being a pretty small blog I pay a lot of attention to the tags people put on reblogs of my art since I'm usually only sifting through like 5-10 of them. This caught my eye and I may as well throw a bit of explanation in here for @sleeping-cliche for this post :)

I've been playing off and on with this species for a REALLY long time and the mortuary infanticide / birth defects page was from 2021 or something? I don't think mortuary infanticide is a real term lol (it sounds kind of redundant) I think I meant something more like ritualized filial cannibalism. A lot of animals consume their young especially if they are weak/runts, because the nutrients from eating the baby is actually worth more and is less of a burden than caring for that baby.
Anyways, with this species at some point I had this idea going where their reproductive organs are housed in those fatty sacs protecting their neck, and they were birthed out of the mouth in eggs??? Something like that. I don't know if that was fully scrapped at this point or not but the filial cannibalism would be done with newborns with severe birth defects or stillborns and it would be sort of a way to return the child to where they came from. Sort of.
In every sense it would appear as though they would return to the womb, but of course would actually be eaten by the birthing parent because true "unbirthing" isn't physically possible. Not a joyous occasion by any means, it would be a very quiet and secretive, perhaps almost shameful act viewed only by the other biological parents and maybe religious leaders or something like that.
Their "crest" or fat sacs would probably be scarified or tattooed after a miscarriage/stillborn/severely defective birth. I think some real world cultures have similar practices of body modifications to mark loss though I don't recall exactly which ones do that.
