Oikawa groans as his fingers scramble haplessly in the dark. The brightness of his phone makes him flinch, but all it takes is one look at the caller ID for him to accept the call.

“Hello? Baby?” Abruptly awake, his heart pounds in his chest and a slight sweat forms at his temples. The Argentinian heat is unbearable even at night this time of year and does nothing to placate the adrenaline that runs through him. His brain dives into worst case scenarios as he tries to find out why you’re calling him at two in the morning.

“Baby?”

Dread slithers down his back and forces him to remove the sheets from his body. Three notches up and Oikawa can finally hear faint background noise as he sits up in bed.

“It’s Risa’s birthday next week?” The sound of your voice, distant as it may be, finally eases his body to slump backwards. Oikawa feels like he can finally breathe again knowing you’re safe and sound.

There’s clacking of a keyboard which aligns with your time zone. You must be at work right now.

“Yes,” an unknown voice appears, “we’re chipping in for a birthday party. I was wondering if you wanted to join.”

Oh, you must have butt dialed him. He lays himself back down onto his pillow and makes himself comfortable by gathering the sheets below his waist.

“Sure. What’s the plan?”

“Karaoke night. Risa loves karaoke.”

Oikawa should really hang up now and text you that you called him by accident. He should go back to sleep because another full day is ahead of him, but he can’t seem to tear himself away from the sound of your voice. It’s the only thing that fails to stick lately. He can picture your face, and in dreams, sometimes he’s graced with the memory of your touch, but your voice, the expression, the cadence, and the tone all fail him whenever he tries to conceive a memory. Oikawa has videos, plenty of them actually, but when you’ve watched them enough, suddenly they feel contrived, a little rehearsed, and unsatisfactory. Phone calls lately have been touch and go with the same questions asked yet again, but this feels like the bridge he needed to feel like a part of your life again. He is reminded that you are a person, halfway across the world, living life, typing our reports, planning birthdays, and in the process, continuing to love him. And though it’s something he’s always known, the different perspective and maybe the mood of this hour makes him want to desperately cling to this moment just a little longer.

“Oh, you know who also loves karaoke? Tooru!”

Oikawa’s eyes shoot open at the sound of his name, and truly, maybe it’s the drowsiness talking, but he almost wants to cry.

He can imagine you right now, in your dress clothes that you hate so much that you immediately peel them off once walking into your foyer. And he hasn’t seen you in a while, but Oikawa’s wallpaper is a candid image of the two of you watching a movie at Mattsun’s house, cuddled deep into his couch. Though the photo was meant to poke fun at your lovey doveyness, it’s one of his most treasured photos at how radiant you look in his arms. And that’s the face he’s imagining you have right now, bright and happy among coworkers. And that’s the face he really misses.

“Really?”

He’s glad your peer allows you to indulge, because just as his heart bursts yearning for you, there’s an eagerness in your tone that says that you miss him too. Any reason to talk about him, it sounds.

“Yeah, he really gets into it. And oh my gosh, he’s so funny but he really loves the ballads. Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On? Belts it.”

You’re laughing, your coworker is laughing, and even at the expense of himself, he gives out a chuckle too.

So Oikawa stays on the line and hopes your battery doesn’t die out too soon. He sets his phone on the nightstand and places the call on speaker. He clutches the sheets to his chest, and finally, closes his eyes as he pretends that there is not eighteen thousand kilometers between you two, hoping to dream that he is there, living right beside you.

you probably won’t be truly happy until you’re an old man… no matter what kind of tournaments you’ll win, you’ll never be completely satisfied.

NEVER has an issue getting you a gift for any occasion. he ALWAYS knows what you’re looking at and what you want and you lowkey think he can read your mind but in reality he just pays attention <3

you’re either just as shy as him to bring out his more assertive side or more assertive than he is to bring out his more timid side – both are good

this relationship is so ungodly domestic. like from the first day it’s just pure comfort and he’s like your rock and you’re his anchor
