Tiefling Jon's First Day At The Archives

The first panel of a series of 11, forming a comic. This one shows an exterior shot of a gallery running along an atrium with a small garden. The openings are big and round, an eye is designed into the stones between each. From one of the openings, a text bubble says: "Elias, you really didn't have to accompany me to the archives. I'm sure I could find it myself."
Looking through one of the openings, we see Elias and Jon walking side by side. Elias is a tall elf, long hair, long robes, long ears. Jon is a tiefling, with short straight horns and short hair. He's arms are full, carrying a wooden chest. A cat walks between them.
Elias: "Oh, it's no bother. In any case, I still wanted to briefly discuss the Archive department's other duties with you." Jon: "... Other duties?"
"Ah, you didn't know?"
Elias explains calmly. "From time to time, our Institute gets informed of a newly discovered artefact that would be of interest to our research, like an ancient scroll or tablet.
Retrieving these artefacts has always been considered the Archivist's task.
Jon, off-screen: "...I would think the research department would handle that."
"They research the artefact once it's been brought in. But really, I wouldn't worry about it overly much.
Of course, in the off chance that you require healing or revivification services, the Institute will pay for those."
Jon looks shocked, losing grip on the chest, his pointy tail startled straight. "What- Why would I need revivication services?!"
Elias, off-screen: "Well, most of these artefacts are found within ruins - old castles, buried settlements."
Elias continues: "You know how those ancient, subteranean places can get. Sometimes they turn dungeonous."
They've come to a corner in the gallery. Behind an opening in one of the interior walls of the building, a staircase spirals up and down into darkness.
Elias gestures: "The Archives are right down these stairs."
Elias and Jon make their way down the staircase, into the dark, Jon in front. The only light comes from a small glowing orb Elias has cast in his hand. He assures Jon: "In any case, with two Foxford * graduates such as yourself and miss James and a fine fighter such as mister Stoker, I have no doubt you'll be able to manage yourselves." He pauses. "Though, if you really don't think you'll be up to the task, it's not too late to decline the position..."
Jon keeps his gaze ahead, carefully stepping down. The cat walks near his feet, tail low. "No, I can- I'll handle it."
Near the bottom of the page, small text reads " * Fantasy Oxford"
Jon and Elias are standing in front of a pair of carved wooden doors, still only lit by the orb. Elias rests his hand on Jon's upper back. "Perfect. Well then, here we are."
The door is decorated with panels. Each panel shows a different image: a snarling wolf, a skull, squirming worms, a figure in the mist, etc. The one nearest to Jon is a spider in a web. Above the door, a huge carved eye looks down on them.
Close-up of Jon as he's about to open the door, holding the key near the lock but not yet turning. From off-screen: "Good luck, Jon."
We see Jon from the other side of the doors as he walks through them. The view is too zoomed in to see anything in the room. He looks apprehensive. The doors are undecorated wood on this side.
Jon leans against the now closed doors. He looks up, scared, overwhelmed.
The image is zoomed out. The archives are a huge space, a vaulted ceiling supported by rows of pillars, between the rows of pillars are bookcases, some filled with books, some with scrolls. More books are piled up in stacks as high as the pillars, on top of the bookcases, or strewn on the floor.
Jon slumps down onto the floor, leaning against the doors, with the same expression as previous. The cat bonks his head against him but he doesn't seem to notice.

The thing about Jonathan Sims is that he isn’t at all stupid, in fact he’s quite the opposite.

Take the Coffin for example, the idea of using an anchor is a logical and honestly quite clever one, however, where this idea falls apart is that while Jon may be intelligent, that does not mean he has common sense, or any sense of self preservation for that matter, and so he goes straight to cutting off his finger, and then continuously trying to cut it off despite the fact his body’s healing factor is clearly winning here.

And then, to top that off, he immediately decides the next reasonable choice of an anchor is his own rib, and actively gets not one, but two of his ribs removed by the walking embodiment of body horror.

Jonathan Sims is not stupid, but he is stupidly impulsive and should not be trusted with any actual plan ever, because while his initial idea may be the most ingenious thing you’ve ever bloody heard, I promise you he is going to ruin it with the most unhinged, god-awful follow up known to man.

Martin Blackwood is an (partially) asshole.

These are the reasons he is an asshole:

He emotionally manipulates people around him to do what he believes is best for them and what they keep telling him actively that they don't want

He self- isolates to the point where it not only harms himself, but also drastically harms others

He believes only in what he thinks is right and refuses to take the advice of people around him, unless it feeds his own self- centered narritave

Martin Blackwood believes he's an asshole.

These are the reasons he believes he's an asshole:

He actually wants people to love and pay attention to him (this is obviously wrong and bad and completely inhuman)

People reject his help (he is obviously useless and can't do anything for anyone)

He actually feels sad when people hurt him (he's just too sensitive that's absolutely not normal)
