How Do I Support Blm And Then Forgive Yoongi Who Used Smtg Against Tham And Didn't Even Properly Have

How do I support blm and then forgive yoongi who used smtg against tham and didn't even properly have a reason for itšŸ˜” we really be okay with our faves doing anything and I really love yoongi but I feel guilty? Like I keep reblogging blm posts but then I feel like an hypocrite and don't know what to do, pls advise mešŸ˜”

I appreciate where you’re coming from, nonnie. I think one of the biggest things to understand when you’re looking at this issue is that it’s complex. It has many different sides and viewpoints. You’re the only one who can really decide what’s right or best for you to feel.Ā

I don’t love the apology that was clearly issued by BigHit and not Yoongi himself. I also understand that it’s highly unlikely we’ll hear him talk about it, because of BigHit. However, I can’t imagine Yoongi actually had any ill intentions when he included that clip in his music. Those are my personal feelings on the topic.

A word I think might help describe the situation you find yourself in isĀ ā€œambivalent.ā€ It means to have mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something or someone. You’ve basically found yourself in a bit of a gray area when it comes to Yoongi. Those feelings are valid, and it’s okay if it takes you a while to reckon with them.

why are people so ugly. where is all this hate coming from. it’s okay to have a discussion. like you know it’s okay to be ADULTS and TALK and LISTEN to everyone’s points of view and from that we learn and grow and maybe see sides of a topic we didn’t see before but in what way is attaking people with hate and ugly words and just plain fucking vile comments a step in the right direction?

holy shit. y’all preach about being nice and wanting to end things like bullying and hate but the minute the anon button is available, you all turn into ugly ass monsters.

fuck. learn to be a decent human for once.

You know what doesn’t sit right and will NEVER sit right...

How George Floyd, a good innocent black man went to the store to buy things who then was murdered by a police officer for suspected forgery.

Then the next day Peter Manfredonia, a white armed serial killer who was on the run across 4 states, was caught and arrested peacefully.

And how black and black ally protesters in Minneapolis protesting for the arrest of the officers who killed George Floyd, were attacked by the police. They were peaceful.

But a few months ago, white people stormed governments buildings in Michigan protesting the quarantine because they wanted a haircut and the police did nothing to them. They were armed.

The problem is clear as water. WHITE PRIVILEGE AND RACISM. It exists and is real. Deny it? You’re the problem. Don’t say or do anything about it? You’re the problem. Abuse your white privilege? You’re the problem. Don’t see a problem with all this? YOURE THE PROBLEM.

CRY WITH THE BLACK COMMUNITY. MOURN WITH THEM. STAND ALONG SIDE WITH THEM. FIGHT FOR THEM. BECAUSE BLACK LIVES ARE IMPORTANT AND THEY ABSOLUTELY FUCKING MATTER.

what is your opinion on the whole Yoongi discourse there is.

Hey, anon. To be honest, I don’t really know. When this whole thing began popping up on my timeline, I took some time to re-read the song lyrics, research the situation and ask a few groups of friends about their thoughts on the situation. What I’ve landed on is: I don’t really know. The way I see it, there are kind of two options:

Yoongi callously used the sample without understanding what it means; purely for aesthetic reasons, or because he thought it sounded cool.

He used a sample from a cult leader as societal commentary. This could mean a general statement about the mindless hate he’s faced in the past (i.e., his references to idol rappers v. underground & references to their success in the west, where it was largely thought they would fail). Or, the placement could be more targeted, in that Jim Jones attracted many POC followers bc he preached social equality -- and then he turned out to be full of shit. That kind of hypocrisy is something Yoongi has spoken on in the past.

To be honest, I find the second option more likely just because I’ve followed him as an artist for so long. It seems more like the kind of statement he’d make than the first option. That being said, I’m just speculating when I say option 2. Yoongi hasn’t come out to explain the intention of the sample either way, and if the first option is correct, then phew. I completely agree he should apologize.

In that same vein of thought, I do think either he/Big Hit should make some sort of statement. Option 1 is offensive and the fact that so many people have interpreted the song as such means the song has caused harm. That, in itself, is the important thing to consider. Even if the intent was good, a lot of people are interpreting it differently.

Anyways, I honestly don’t feel like I have enough input to draw any concrete conclusions. Really, the only thing I feel comfortable enough saying definitively is I don’t know enough to have a solid opinion.Ā

People are absolutely entitled to feel however they feel, though! And ABOVE ALL ELSE, please do not speak over other people’s voices/tell them how they should be heard. There’s an added layer to this situation, since Jim Jones largely impacted POCS -- black Americans, in particular.Ā Ā

*Just want to add a disclaimer that these are only my thoughts. I don’t speak for anyone else, and I absolutely could be wrong.Ā

ā€œsampling a voice is not the same thing as agreeing with it. often it is ironic and used with specific context. if you don't think it's tasteful, that's your opinion. but given that j-m j0nes was notoriously anti-south korea, it's clear there is specific context to the sample.ā€
