a little sneaky peek at a certain director’s cut

Sanemi rolled over and had to stop himself from nearly toppling out of his bed at the sight which greeted him.

Y/N. Asleep next to him.

It shouldn’t have been as shocking as it was; after all, he’d spent the better part of the summer doing far more than something as innocent as sleeping beside her.

Her face was soft and so very peaceful. For a moment, Sanemi saw not the ghost of Y/N’s present, but the face of the girl he’d loved since he was a boy.

His fingers reached tentatively for her cheek, unable to stop himself from the small indulgence of caressing her face. The moment his knuckles brushed against the soft curve of her cheekbone, Y/N stirred, and leaned into his touch.

Whatever remained of his heart shattered inside of Sanemi’s chest. This was what could have been — what should have been, had he not screwed everything up; had he not driven her away.

Her eyes fluttered open and collided with his, and Sanemi still did not remove his hand from her cheek. For a moment, there was no one else on earth but them: just two best friends who’d always wanted more but who’d never been brave enough to act on it. There was no dead brother or mother, no heart ache or poisoned purple pills.

There was just them; only them.

And then the moment ended, the shutters in Y/N’s eyes slamming tightly shut as awareness returned to her. Whatever had fleetingly passed between them only seconds before — that calmness, that sense of being whole after spending so long being fractured — it was only a dream.

It could never be them; and Sanemi had known better than to hope.
