Rant about fanfiction writing

I was just informed by my brother (who thinks he’s a better writer than anyone else because he has some fancy degree in writing) that fanfiction “doesn’t count” as “real writing” because you aren’t using your own “ideas.”

He doesn’t know that I write fanfiction. He probably wouldn’t have admitted his opinion if her did. But it has pretty much solidified that I will never tell anyone I know in person what I write.

I’ve already been told by several family members that my obsession with a “stupid tv show” is ridiculous and that I’m “too old” to fangirl.

Sigh. /rant

Han is all “there’s to much Vader in him,” without mentioning that there is too much Vader in Leia too. 

Like, Bail Organa, bless his poor poor soul, tried to politician the Vader out of her. He tried SO FUCKING HARD. 

But the fact that she abandoned politics to be a General in the Resistance says a lot about her similarities to Anakin Skywalker.

The basic problem with “it’s OK to stoop to our enemies’ level because turnabout is fair play” is that you can’t help but have an unrealistically negative image of your enemies – even if they’re genuinely bad your image of them will be worse than they really are, because of all the usual effects that bias people against their enemies – confirmation bias, stereotyping/homogeneity bias, the tendency to treat unusually bad cases as typical cases because they’re the typical cases you worry about, getting your information mostly from friendly sources that go out of their way to find and highlight bad stuff the enemies do, and so on

the result of this being that trying to respond in kind generally leads to being worse behaved because you’re matching your behaviour to an unduly negative image, and when both sides of a conflict are doing this simultaneously – which is usually! – it leads to a gradual creep downward in collective standards until eventually everything is as bad as possible all the time
