The moonbeams suffusing through the transparent curtains are as cold as ice at this time of the night. You shiver and wiggle deeper into your cocoon of blankets, but the thick fabric does nothing to shelter you from the chills that run down your spine. You roll over on your side and squeeze your eyes shut against the brightness of the moonlight, knowing that you really should get some sleep before the night is over and you face your doom in the morning.

But there are too many noises that grate on your nerves in the foreign guest room you’re staying in. The clock on the mantle ticks too loudly, and the ancient wooden floor panels seem to ominously groan under the weight of all the ornate furniture. The only familiar sound is the heavy snores of your nursemaid from where she sleeps across the room. For a moment, jealousy clutches your heart, and you want nothing more than to shake her awake so she can suffer with you through your bout of insomnia. But she also has a big day tomorrow, and you refuse to burden her further.

After all, who else knows how to arrange your hair just right for your wedding tomorrow? At the thought of your wedding, you shudder again and pull the covers over your head. But the thick quilts are too expensive—fine silks instead of the soft cotton you’re used to, and they offer you no comfort.

You long to be back in your bed down in the south, to where your mother and sisters remain. But you know you might never see them again. Suddenly, you feel so alone—like a little lamb lost in a lion’s den. There is no familiarity here. And it’s too cold.

Your heart pooled with anxiety as you approached the car park. In the light drizzle of the afternoon you could scarcely make out his car but it was most certainly there. Through the haze of grey you could make out its curving outlines. The driver’s door opened. You watched as he stepped out, his figure shifting into focus as you walked closer.

“Mummy, walk faster!” the excited girl clutching onto your hand called out. Her palm was sticky with a congealed mixture of sweat and craft glue - you had helped her make Yoongi his father’s day card a few hours before. You were certain you’d gotten all the glue off the stubborn girl and you briefly worried what Yoongi would think.

“I’m going as fast as I can sweetheart,” you reassured. It was only a partial lie. In your other hand you were clutching a small pink suitcase with all of Mae’s overnight items, toothbrush, pajamas and her purple teddy bear, which had lovingly been named ‘purple bear’. Despite the bag’s small size, it weighed you down considerably. You were happy she was so excited to spend time with her father (it’d certainly been long enough since he’d managed to clear enough of his schedule to make room for his daughter) but another part of you was undeniably scared.

You didn’t get your period until you were nearly seventeen-years-old and when all of your classmates were talking about boys and smoking weed after school, you were playing neopets in the back of the classroom.
