If I were to write a Serious Literary Novel about the State of Modern Society, I'd probably call it something like The Hollow World. Because lately every time I see lifestyle articles about how to find satisfaction in life, it all seems so hollow.
And I think it comes down to how people approach suffering. So much of lifestyle and mental health advice comes down to how one deals with suffering, and a secular perspective can do little more than tell you to ignore it. Find a hobby that takes your mind off of suffering. Buy something that distracts you from suffering. Enjoy life despite suffering. Avoid suffering at all costs. Ignore suffering and focus on the happy things in life. But that doesn't change the fact that there is suffering--and from a purely secular perspective, it's pointless. So ultimately, life is pointless, because the only thing you're doing with it is using one half of life to try to drown out the other half. Your world is hollow because you've scraped away the unpleasant reality underneath, leaving only a pretty, but empty shell.
Christianity doesn't do that. Christianity tells us to live with suffering. There is a point to it. There is a grander plan that we can't see. Suffering is heroic and can lead to heroic acts. Even failure can be meaningful. We don't need to ignore the suffering--we can embrace it as a reality of life. Sure, we struggle with it. We mourn it. We'd rather not deal with it. But we don't wash it away with platitudes and distractions. We are allowed to have a whole world--pleasant and unpleasant--because we know that even suffering has a purpose.

🌻 What's this oc's mental health state?
you know, that's a good question, and something i have thought about. i think she's not very well off, but knows she isn't great and does her best anyways. specifically i've considered giving her some level of disassociation from reality.
probably related to this is her intense desire for something More in life. she feels dissatisfied with the present state of the world and her own life and wants to find out if there's anything deeper behind it all (is the last word really just a meager balance of good and evil? really? no ultimate triumph of the Good TM??)
🌱 Does this oc have any pets? Do they have any pets they want?
o interesting question, unexpected. i have not given this one any thought..
uhh probablyy.. no like actual "pets" but she is a bit of a wild child (read: lives in th actual wilderness) so she probably does a good bit of communing with nature . kind of like a disney princess now that i think of it lol
Toby
yeah man alright
🍁 what's this oc's favorite genre of movies/tv shows/books/etc?
fantasy, duh 🤭
but if we want specifics... i feel like he would be into things like the seven sorcerers? (i mean i just reread it so) probably has read the Hobbit since i did that around his age (10-ish)
maybe he would like to say he watches horror things, too, but his parents probably would only let him watch the old classics (modern stuff often too scary for their liking)
Jareth
🍃 describe this oc in one word
man why you gotta do this to me *wheeze*
uhhh one would expect glamorous or extra or something like that
i personally would say "a loser" since i feel that encompasses a lot of the aspects of his personality
but let me put a little thought into it... perhaps "restless" would be good come to think of it.
since all the goblins are suckups to him bc they're scared, and there's not much to do around here anymore (not many people remember to wish things away to the labyrinth nowadays) perhaps, he'll look into how that horrid girl who managed to escape him is doing these days.. wouldn't it be a shame if someone like her were to, oh, i don't know, snub him?

“But what can you actually DO with a degree in [insert subject here]?!”
Write fanfiction with a high degree of accuracy in a very specific field, next question.
