"How is she?" Bruce asked, watching Jason slump in a chair, curled like a question mark around a cup of tea.

"Tired," Jason said, "Terrified. Disappointed. Sad- not that she's saying any of it right now."

"Jay, it's not-"

"Her feet are cut to ribbons," Jason said softly. "And she's not hungry at all. I'm not sure if she's depressed or it's the adjustment to her meds but she didn't go to class today."

Bruce swallowed asking if he still wanted to be involved with you. He could hear the worry. He was afraid for you. He felt guilty for not being there. "Whatever she decides to do with school, it'll be okay," he sighed. "She needs time to recover."

Jason nodded slowly, "I thought she was on Drugs- I told her to leave."

"You were upset," Bruce said fairly. "You thought she crossed a line-"

"I should have known better," Jason protested, "I mean fuck. All I would have had to do was believe her but I had to-"

"Jason," Bruce sighed, "You panicked. You made a mistake."

"She could have died." Jason rubbed his hand over his face. "She was lost. She was scared- She came to me for help. Because she didn't understand what was happening and I threw her out."

"Have you talked to-"

"She's not been real chatty," Jason snorted. "All she said when I dropped her off was 'Thank you' and 'She'd call me'; She hasn't called and I've been left on read thus far."

"Jason."

"She wants some space," Jason sighed. "Time to figure out how she feels about it."

"Is that wise?"

"Maybe not," Jason sighed "But. If I make her talk she'll just tell me what she thinks I want to hear to get me to fuck off."

"So what does this mean for the future?" Bruce asked.

"I don't know," Jason admitted. "But I do know that I'm not leaving her."

"Jason," you hiss, ripping your wrist out of his grip, "I'm not doing this with you."

"Too fucking bad," Jason said, grabbing you and pulling you to him. "It's a chemical imbalance. It's a mental illness. It's not a goddamn death sentence!" He shook you gently and gripped your shoulders.

"Isn't it?" you yell, pushing against his chest uselessly. "You saw what it did to my fucking mom-"

"Pockets," he said, swallowing hard. "Baby. Honey. Don't do this. I won't let you do this."

"Jay you deserve someone... not like this. Not like-"

Lips crush against yours. He can't let you finish that sentence. He can't let you do this to yourself in some misguided attempt to protect him. "I died, remember?" he said, brushing hair out of your eyes and wiping tears off your cheeks with his thumbs. "And the first word I said when I woke up was your fucking name."

"Jason-"

"You've never run away from anything your whole life, Pockets. Don't start here. Not with me." When you crumbled and started to cry, the anger giving way to fear, all he can do is hold you. "I'm not going anywhere, punk. We're a package deal, remember?"

"You didn't sign up for this," you whimper. "This fucking shit show I can't-"

Jason squeezed you tighter and swatted you on the ass, "Baby. I signed up for you," he chuckled. "Whatever that looks like." He tilted your chin up and wiped your nose on his sleeve. "You never gave up on me. I'm not leaving you again, Pockets."

"Promise?"

"Promise," he said, kissing your forehead. "It doesn't have to be a shit show, baby. We just have to figure this out."

"I just feel so out of control and I can't think- I can't focus. Jay I was so scared."

"I know," he said softly. "I should have stayed with you. I shouldn't have let you leave that night. I knew you weren't okay- you weren't making sense but I thought-"

"You thought I was high," you murmur.

Jason cringed, nodding slowly. "I'm sorry, Y/N," he breathed. "I shouldn't have-"

"I don't blame you. I felt high- nothing felt real. Not really and I just couldn't stop. I couldn't slow down."

"We'll figure it out," Jason said, "Just... Let's just take this one day at a time, okay?"

"Okay," you answer, exhaling slowly. "Jay, I love you I just-"

"I love you too," he said, smiling a little. "Let's go to bed, huh? It's past Scruffy's bedtime."

a/n: okay, another one before i go torture myself in actually reading my textbook that i haven't picked up in weeks.

“Shouldn’t you be with your sister?” Xavier questioned as you tied on your apron.

“No, she wanted to work at pilgrim world for some odd reason. I would rather die than dress up as a colonist,” you informed the boy.

“That doesn’t surprise me.”

“Hey, Y/N! Need a hand?” Tyler called out from behind the counter as you and Xavier cleaned the tables.

“Already got one,” you replied back pointing to Thing wiping the table.

“I thought I told you and your sister that he was bad news,” Xavier whispered to you as he reached over to grab a mug on your side of the table.

“Twice actually, but I couldn’t care less about him. Wait. Enlighten me,” you turned to face him.

That was when you noticed how close you two actually were. Though you were standing around a foot away from each other, it was concerning how he seemed to step closer to talk.

“It happened last Outreach Day. I was working on a mural for the town then he and his friends come up and start attacking me. They destroyed the mural and left me with bruised ribs. People like him don’t like people like us,” he explained.

“Hm.”

“It’s not like you would care anyways, right?” Xavier scoffed walking off to the next table.

“It seems like he’s changed, quiter softer now, which is disappointing,” you admitted as you followed Xavier. “Why do you care so much if I talk to him though?”

“You’re kidding.”

“Why would I kid?” you blanked.

“Open your eyes, Y/N! I have been here on your side this entire time, and you still don’t get it?” Xavier snapped banging the table with the tub full of plates and mugs taking a step closer to you. “Sometimes it’s unbelievable how little empathy you have for others.”

“Xavier,” you breathed out taking a step back.

“I like you, Y/n. What do I have to do for you to see that?” he followed in taking a step closer.

“You know I don’t actually like Tyler, right? You might be an imbecile and infuriating but-” you hinted.

“Really know how to make a guy blush,” he let out a small laugh.

“It’s the attributes I like about you though,” you muttered under your breath.

“What was that?” he mocked.

“Don’t make me say it again,” you deadpanned looking down on the floor avoiding his gaze.

“No, I don’t think I heard you the first time,” he joked he lifted your chin with his hand. “What did you say?”

He moved his hand from your chin to the back of your neck pulling you into a kiss. You found yourself kissing him back wrapping your arms around his neck. You could feel him smile into the kiss. You didn’t kow how long you to stayed there for until you heard a cough behind you.

“Seems like you’ve had fun working,” Wednesday said unimpressed as she pulled you away from Xavier. In which he just laughed as you tried to get your arm out of Wednesday’s grip.

"Wednesday, why do you always have to grab the same arm," you whined as she dragged you out.

He really wished his family OF DETECTIVES could be more discreet about watching the goings on. But out of the corner of his eye, Steph and Cass are practically vibrating with glee. Over your right shoulder Tim looks like he's watching an experiment. And just slightly up the steps he knows Bruce and Alfred are probably trying to plan an engagement party. And you don't even like him like that.

It's a little humiliating if he's honest. But he can't tell you 'no'. Not when you look at him like that. All wide eyed and grinning at him. So he ripped the brown paper off carefully and for just a moment. His heart stuttered.

"You would remember that," he said smiling a little, as he looked down at the copy of The Once and Future King. It's a discarded library copy, and out of curiosity he paused. Flipping to the slot where a paper card would be, only for his heart to ache.

This wasn't just a copy you'd picked up at a library fundraiser. This was THE copy. The one he borrowed so many times that he knew every creased page like he knew the scars on his knees.

His untidy little kid handwriting- like finding a message in a bottle. And at the bottom- his mom's handwriting. He'd almost forgotten what it looked like. But as he traced his finger over it all he can do it blink at you for a second.

What fuckery you'd pulled to find it, he didn't know. But he doesn't know what to say.

And he's even more at a loss for words when you stand on his toes to kiss his cheek, "Happy Birthday, Jaybird."

As he stands there with his cheeks burning and his chest aching, feeling like an idiot for not saying anything all he can do is tuck the book into his jacket pocket, and try not to regret not kissing you stupid.
