The Sanson servants, rewright
Yes...They deserve arcs...
So André Legris:
Now, nothing is known about him, exept that he accepted the offer to rip up Damien. Since André Legris sounds a lot like the fake French names I found in an article about Romani/Sinti people having multiple false identities, it gives me some idea. So, initially, he went to work as a servant for Nicolas-Charles-Gabriel Sanson, thinking it would be a more normal job, and by the time he understood that no, it's not a regular job, well his tabar had long since f-cked off, leaving him with a social position he hates, but is too afraid to leave. His goal is simply to get enough money to take his leave and marry (executioner servants were typically allowed to marry, like, I have encountered executioner assistants being married with kids, just it wasn't as common probably for economical reasons), maybe with a position as executioner in a small town, or go back to traveling. So, he even found a young woman, no girl (of 15) who's the foster daughter to Soubise, who's also of romani descent, and they can kind of relate to her...But because she had become Barré's protégée, Nicolas-Gabriel hates her guts. Imagine if racial prejudice, professionally induced sadism meets sibbling rivalry (since, unlike his older brother, he did eventually come to see Barré as a paternal figure, probably due losing his father younger). He honestly is a bit desperate to have someone who would share his struggles. Also, he thinks it's only a matter of time that she ends up lynched or gang-raped in a prison riot, and he's not exactly wrong. Plus...He's the only one to point out how weird the habits of the "equarisseurs" in terms of child-rearing are.
Nurse-maid in charge of Sanson baby number X: Puts her or the Sanson baby inside random dead guy's rotting rib cage
Legris: Did you know what you're doing is perfectly disgusting.
Now, Soubise...
Soubise: He a travelling torturer but increasing torturer of Paris, at least de-facto, because Barré is getting a bit too old to inflict "la question par l'eau" which involves lifting some pretty heavy stuff. Descendent of the Guillaume family, he fought all his life to bring back his dynasty to it's former glory, even if it meant being unable to afford a stable home, and for a time, travelled through different provinces to torture sessions, often returning to Paris to work under various masters, and does the odd correction at the Hôpital Général to round off monthly expences. During that time, he married and had a son, but his wife died in childbirth. As a youth, he was apprentice to Jules Tronson, and developped a form of emotional attachment to Madeleine, whom he also wished to marry, albeit more out of dynastic ambition and sibbling-like attachment than romantic or sexual feelings. He still strongly hates Jean-Baptiste Sanson, for in his eyes, taking away everything he held dear. Tronson's attention, Madeleine Tronson, the post of executioner of Paris (which he believes is the rightful property of the Guillaume bloodline). Also, he resents Jean-Baptiste for having Madeleine's body burried near those of respectable people, since when they were alive, they only saw Madeleine as someone they could use for sadistic fun. Not only did he loose a loved one, but he also interpreted her burial as a post-mortem indignity, thinking leaving her body to the dogs would at least be a more dignified burial than this. He's sadistic and hateful, with a playful sadistic side, but also one that's deeply affectionate to those he perceives as family members. He's kind of "papa cat", like those adult male cats that play nice with kittens. He, Barré, his son who's named André, and Blanche (his foster daughter, in fact the daughter of the nurse-maid he hired/rescued, real name Parni) and her mother Marie, real name Luludji, are a kind of "found family".
La Blancheur: The most competant one, and Jean-Baptiste's right hand man. He is a mulato, and almost 80 years old, but remarkably in shape for his age. Originally a slave born of rape, used as a slave to whip other slaves, he eventually fled after the next one to whip was the man who raised him...He eventually reached Nantes, were he did the odd jobs for a bit before eventually coming to work for Sanson II, after the latter saved him from an almost lethal injury, free of charge. He rapidly rose the servants/aids rank. He is qualified enough to get a post in Rouen, and his new boss Jean-Baptiste would be more than happy to finance it, but honestly, with the amount of intrigue and mind games he would need to acquire this posts, La Blancheur isn't interested in that. Plus, he honestly likes the younger servants of the Sanson estate who consider him a grandfather figure and love and respect him, and he doesn't want to leave his social group behind, especially as he's at a point in his life were every day could be his last.
Anne-Marthe Dubut, rewright
Anne-Marthe, the powerful matriarch. From what we know of her as a person, she was eventually forced to flee her husband, Jean-Baptiste Barré, with the family of her daughter-in-law. The Mémoires portray her as cruel and somewhat mad, but also a capable leader. We also know she was from a family of coopers, who turned to the profession of executioner for unknown reasons.
So, many fictional exemples portray her as a tyrant...Which, we know that executioner families had to deal with high levels of rivalry from other executioner families. The Mémoires and also more historical sources such as "Le métier de bourreau" by Jacques Delarue does make an emphasis on that type of social circle. Also, the theories proposed in the book "Torture and democracy" also push in that direction.
Like, her son is forced to work professionally with the guy who used to mistreat her. Great...For her.
So, when Charles was fourteen, we would know this grandmother who gets the authority from her ability to intrigue. So, she decides to kind of insure her grandson is raised as a typical "executioner's child" with the values of his cast, and loads of affection, and agrees for him to be in boarding school because...The family needs an intrigant who understands the arguments the "outsiders" would be sensitive to, and she knows her time is close. So her motivation is: "To protect this family, I need to teach my grandson to be an intrigant before I die." However, the second he shows interiorisation of the concepts of honor that normal or high-status people believed in the XVIIIth century, she immediately flips, and acts cold and threatening.
Also, she's a master manipulator herself, and basically sets rules so Charles is as brainwashed as possible, because for her own survival, she needs to insure the men in her life believe this "executions is justice, so our mission is holy" kind of drivel. She in all honesty believes that she was chosen by God to form the next generation of Sanson executioners, and passes on that stuff to her son and grandson.
Like, she's a family woman, but a family woman with plenty of edge. Also, some of her tactics would be kind of undermining non-religious authority of outsiders. Such as:
Charles-Henri got a correction from school, because it would make the procuror shut up or from Barré (whom she dislikes personally): Grand-mère, can I please have a cushion for a the trip...I really can't sit.
Anne-Marthe: Of course you can, sweetie. Here take this one I made.
Same situation, but this time, Charles-Henri got a correction from his dad...
Charles-Henri: Grand-mère, can I please have a cushion for the trip, I really can't sit.
Anne-Marthe: Well, that'll help remember to not fight with your younger brothers. Give me your hand, you're going to have five more for even asking.
Charles-Henri rewright
Now, a very big critique I have with my previous versions of Sanson (that I haven't published yet) and several other versions FGO, Monsieur de Paris and Innocent, is that young Charles is way too fluffy and not clumsy enough, especially when contrasted with his historical counterpart.
I want him to come off as roguishly intelligent, and as someone able to pass for someone else in boarding school, so for his lies to be convincing, he'd also need to have a fairly good memory. Also, he'd be helping his father kill/torture people since age 12 as a summer job.
He lacks self-reflection, and would be considered kind of brainwashed and crazy...He doesn't lack empathy, but he does lack self-reflection.
Also, he was known as being clumsy on the scaffold, so I think for a fictional counterpart, it would be kind of funny if he's also clumsy off the scaffold. Also, because being clumsy was the worst reputation an executioner could have, so he's pretty insecure about it. But he also survived a lot of potencial lynchings...So, that's an odd combo.
I also like the idea of him befriending the school's professional spanker.
Also, because being in a boarding school with some wealthy kids from aristocratic families, and poor kids from artisan families, he would need to eventually have to explain away that he didn't experience several social events that were common place at the time with his father being a Janséniste (something deeply frowned upon in a Jesuit school no less, and while knowing his father is a devout catholic).
Also, dance lessons (yes, his dad decided to pay for dance lessons) would be as awkard as possibly possible. And his lying and lack of self-reflection would create scenes like this:
Teacher: No, Charles-Henry, it is not acceptable to knock out book cases. Go stand in the corner with the dunce hat.
Charles-Henri: Yes. I'm so sorry. (thinking to himself: wow, I can't believe that with jesuits and normies, it's this easy to talk myself out of a whipping. All I have to do is stand there with a silly hat, faking embarassement. Is this the reason why outsiders spend so much time trying to harm people condemned to the pilory who don't appear to care ? Interesting...)
Or:
Classmate: How can you befriend the guy who's in charge of beating us ?
Charles-Henri: There's no school rules against such frequentations, so I simply took my liberties as I see fit. Rules are strict enough as is. (Really, he's made to share a room with the school corrector).
(Basically, honor and caring for one's reputation was very important in the XVIIIth century, for at least purely self-preservation reason. And now, there's a 10-14 year old who never had to maintain reputation amongst his peers having to fake his identity at boarding school.)
Jean-Baptiste Sanson rewright
So, I think for a more historically accurate and sensible manga about the Sanson family...
Jean-Baptiste would be the...least normal one. He grew up without the need to maintain a reputation, but with a crap ton of rivals.
As an adult, he's the type of man that doesn't leave indifferent. He's cold, and tends to use psychological violence to avoid physical one when he can. He's a firm believer that kids need CP, and a lot of it, plus instinct of repitition. He's abusive physically, but with his family, he shows a more affectionate side.
Also, to him, wanting the approval of someone on an emotional level is deeply intimate. and he's overall very stoic. The only one he oppenly seeks the approval of is his mother. And frankly, that makes him seem like kind of an asshole. Also, because of his status as executioner in third generation, he doesn't necessarily understand the social norms that are outside his cast. To those of his cast, he comforms pretty well, and he's the figure of hardened pariah masculinity, without necessarily being rude. Also, he's often times more polite with the condemned that with the judges.
With that out of the way, Jean-Baptiste is a man in a stressful situation. Just imagine killing for a living, having a list of rivals including one that lives right next door, and also having the equivalent of Weinstein as a nextdoor neighbour, exept if Weinstein was into more sadistic stuff and frequently expressed his desire to torture his daughter, right in front of him, and he has the social status to get away with it. That's on top of being an executioner, with all the psychological weight this implies, and he's also a medic who makes his own remedies from scratch, with his wife and daughter being the main helpers. Also, Charles-Henri was a klutz, who would often mess up stuff on the scaffold, and gets bullied even with a secret identity in boarding school (this is the school system that produced a certain Divin Marquis). So, for Jean-Baptiste, keeping his eldest son unlynched is a part-time job to mess up his already incredibly busy squedule.
Jean-Baptiste and the comte de Charolais are "friends", well, more of an allience. Charolais finds Sanson III fascinating because he's one of the only people who doesn't fear nor admire him, and also because his low social status and medical skills allow the count to use Sanson III to patch up his victims to drown out the scandals. In exchange, he has a pact of non-agression, plus he'll help defend the Sanson's family's interests for succession stuff.

Is my character design better than Snow White 2024 by Disney ?
Like...I know it's far from perfect, but I still like it. I decided to go a "by the book" approach to her character design, and go for something 1740s inspired.
To me, this "third party with no chance of winning" and having only two serious candidates kinda proves politics are a sham. Because it creates the situation of having two possibilities of discourse that suck. Like Trump, you may or may not agree with him, but he didn't fulfill his few promises that probably got him the votes, and when he did, he was despised for it. So, for example, when he or his advisors decided to do some diplomacy with NK after they became a nuclear threat was one of his few smart decisions. It looks more like electing a scapegoat than a representative.
Also...each new sets of candidates for US presidency after Obama was crazier than the later.

More medieval dyes for y'all!

How I would redesign the Fate French Servants
Jeanne d'Arc:
So...If we are going for a theme of servants being combinations of the various legends about them, plus slightly modernising them by making them look like "anime magical people, kinda"...
So, for Jeanne, I think combining her "freshly arrived in men's clothing, before she got the armor" look to her look as prisonner. Because during her trial, she was the ultimate magnificence...But also incorporating some "fantasy" elements, because it sells merch.
Well, I would think of giving her a floof of short black hair, that would look like a pageboy or bowl cut that has been grown out due to neglect. And it looks like a fluff ball. That, combined with a rather tanned, ashy complexion and a short but rather strong built, that would be hidden under some peasant pants, a long pourpoint and a hooded capelet that would cover everything above the waste. All of those colors would be dull and desaturated, exept for her bright blue eyes. And of course, she'd have her signature banner, and signature laiton ring.
So, despite her more "dimunitive appearence" and short stature (would probably be the shortest of the French servants) her poses and stature would be commanding.
If this would be turned into a more proper anime with slice of life scenes, girl would enjoy current baggy clothes trend, especially for pants (she was a bashful young woman, so any fashion that would conceal more of her body would be a welcome in her eyes).
Gilles de Rais:
Now, Gilles de Rais was a knight and baron of profession, and was known for his expensive tastes. I would give him some very voluminous robes with some cuffed sleeves, as was the fashion of the 1430s, probably of a deep blue.
And instead of being a hunchback, he'd be a more masculine type of handsome, with harsh, angular features and some nice short black hair. He'd also be quite a bit paler than Jeanne, just because of his noble status, he won't be as tanned.
Honestly, his Saber form is nigh-perfect, save for a haircut and some broader and more masculine features.
Charles-Henri Sanson:
The horse shoulder platrons and the purple necktie can go to the deepest part of hell. With that out of the way, I'd also give him some long brown hair, and give him the look of someone in their mid-twenties, having the appearence of the seductive "Chevalier de Longval". And he'd have a long, floaty coat of deep green and a white hankerchief.
My honest thoughts on being called a nazi
So, if it's a WASP or Afro-American, I just think LOL, especially if they are far-left leaning. Like, to be honest, I think the meaning of the word has been watered down too much over the years for me to care.
If it's a Russian doing this I would be frankly terrified, and deeply hurt if it's a jew.
I discriminate against name-calling. It's my choice.
Well, more like putting things into perspective. Also, this man had a talent for escaping lynching.

Sanson lamenting the good ol’ days of breaking people on the wheel…
A very interesting case
Now...I uncovered thanks to the Archives Nationale a huge riot that happened at the beginning of the year 1756 at Bicêtre. The prison Bicêtre known for it's inhumane conditions had a huge riot in 1756. Of the riot, 18 people were arrested, and only two faced actual legal punishment: Louis Robillard, the ringleader and Jean-Alexandre Léole, 23 year old stocking-maker. The rest were all freed and cleared of all charges on the first of April, 1756. They were all sentenced to torture and hanging on first trial, but because appeal was automatic, it didn't mean much.
This overall gives me the impression that the Parlement really didn't want the hot potatoe that would represent the public execution of the rioters. Also, about the inhumane treatment of homeless people in the XVIIIth century, it was so against the popular ethic that at least 18 people went to riot against it (probably a lot more), and it wasn't even the first time such a thing happen. Also, the fact that one of them did get "la question" does suggest that the Parlement at the very least believed there were more people involved in the riot. The bloodiest riot against l'Hôpital Général happened in 1750.
It took me reading the entire list of condemnations of the Parlement to find this case out.
Appearently Charles Sanson II had a very harsh personality
Usually, law back then didn't care much for abuse. So...He had to be pretty nasty for the Parlement de Paris to do something about it. We don't know whom he ill-treated, probably an assistant, apprentice or a prisonner.
So...I made a little investigation as to how many people the Parlement de Paris tortured, or rather ordered the torture of
So, 109 people for the decade of 1750, 235 people in the decade 1760 and 122 people in the decade of 1770.
I don't want to do some stats like that.
So, Charles-Henri would have been executioner both during the highest decade of Ancien Régime repression and during the French Revolution...

Snap's insane schedule
So, based on what we know, from essays and what not, for head of house mandatory subject teachers at Hogwarts, their work week would be 54 to 62 hours conservatively.
Now, Snape does that on top of spying after book 4.

We as a family accidentally let the beta fish starve to death
It happened a long time ago...Fishes cannot make screams of distress so...We forgot it existed until it was too late and it decomposed. Still feel bad about it. If we would to have killed it to eat it, I wouldn't have cared but...It happened so long ago, don't remember when, still feel bad about it.

Idea by Gentle-starlight.
@gentle-starlight
Jean-Baptiste, now pinned down and his movements limited by his stroke, felt like he was young all over again, in the worst way possible. He had once again many rivals who swarmed to Paris like vultures, each one trying to get the position of executioner of Paris for himself. He and his mother managed to diverge most of them, usually with revelations of bribery.
And once again, he was in a position to once again dissobey his mother in the name of love, this time not fraternal nor sexual, but fatherly. Socializing with his colleagues and their sons did taught him how it was expected of their wives to know how to dissect, how to cook human fat, and so on, and even help their husbands or sons on the scaffold. So now, Madeleine should learn that trade to. He would also need to have her desensitized as fast as possible to sleeping and living right next to torture instruments.
Setting up new rules for her was key, and that meant she would have to sleep in the torture chamber at least once a week, it didn't matter which day. "No, Madeleine, it's for your good, and you are not allowed a single word of protest, have I made myself clear ?
-But...
-Also, you will join your brothers for the next dissection. Make sure to dress more simply for the occasion."
Madeleine seemed puzzled. Normally, she was not allowed in, at all. It was explicitly against the rules set up by Anne-Marthe. But also, she was normally also not allowed to sleep there, nor wanted to. Yet, many things were now changing...Changing for the worst, and if she would to be married off soon, she might as well have be taught the skills to survive it.

Living abroad really shows me how absurd American and Canadian politics regarding public transportation really are
The "right wing politicians being pro-cars and anti-public transport" is a level of absurdity that is seldom seen accross the world. Like, the country were I reside is deeply socially conservative, very traditional values, and still have public transportation and walkable streets.
"Hello, I hope you and your family are well. Can you please help me recycle the post on my account? 🌺 And help rescue my family from the war in Gaza? 🙏 Thank you."

Hello.

Drow beauty ideals, throughout the Underground period, for their women
Now, feminine beauty ideals are declined in "Rodoeé" ("pink eyed") and "Ieé" (comes from their ancient word for "black rowan', in the modern Drow language is a formal term to designate a sexually attractive and mature woman).
The Drow beauty ideals for women tend to favor universally a pear-shaped body, a flat chest, skin like ashen porcelain and dull, milky white curly hair. Pink or red eyes are also considered widely attractive, as well as dark circles beneath them.
However, to be considered a youthful, cute beauty, a drow girl/woman has to be young, short, have a hairless pubis, child-like facial features including a round face, big cheeks and large eyes, and cadaverous legs and buttocks, with bruised or hyper-pigmented laps and inner thighs. Having intact upper thighs, for a woman in Drow culture, is considered shameful, indecent and ugly, a sign of poverty, religious impiety, social unconciousness and poor education. Cadaverous buttocks are considered both diminutive and pretty, in drow culture, as well as associated with the wingless youths (trying to spank someone with wings tends to be difficult, and even with the wide spread of wing ablation, the association of "butt like livor mortis" and childhood hasn't really dissapeared).
The more "mature" and sophisticated feminine beauty has an oval face, a patchy pubis and is tall, with a few wrinkles and must be as cadaverous as possible on the upper body, but not on the lower. Must have the scar sof her wing ablation very well visible. A bruised back thigh is considered too childish past a certain point.
Typically, to be considered attractive, girls have to be corpse-like on their lower body but healthy looking in the upper body, and women have to be corpse-like on the upper body and healthy in their lower half.
In terms of depilation, the figure of death and decay is venerated, and thus both male and female drow would sometimes artificially rip off chunks of head hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, neck hair (the nape of the neck in elves is much hairier than in humans) and pubic hair (elves don't really have leg hairs like humans have). The goal is to make it seem like maggots crawled underneath the skin, displacing the hair follicles out. It's often accompanied by burns to create fake maggot holes, and the hair that is present around that burn would be carefully depilated in a way that looks as random as possible.
Madeleine Tronson, character sheet
(For my own historical fiction)
Physical appearence: Madeleine Tronson is a short, pear-shaped petite girl, that we follow from ages 12 to 21. She has a pale ashy complexion, that was briefly rosy cheeked around the period of her sixteenth birthday. She has doe eyes with taupe irises, surrounded by slightly bluish dark circles. Her hair are long, black and opulant, she usually wears in braids. As a married woman, would get the sides of her hair trimmed shorter to achieve the curls fashionable at her time, although kept the back of it's original length.
Clothing style: On work days, Madeleine prefers to protect her stays with an apron and bed coat, apron and skirt, usually a bronwnish grey. She always wears and oversized mobcap. For her sunday dress, she wears a grey linen robe battante with long, narrow sleeves, decorated at the front with a large black silk bow.
Personality: Madeleine is a sweet, naive girl who's also very nervous and easily frightened. She's very devout in her relationships, would it be friends or family, but needs some coaxing to get out of her shell. She experiences trouble learning the ways of "respectable" society, and has trouble fitting in because of her very warm personality. She was also educated with a swift hand, and is firmly convinced this was for her good, to the point of fighting her instincts of fight or flight. Despite this, she's used to being cuddled and hugged after such ordeals, and tend to be very distraught when such a treatment is refused to her. She's also quite the prudish girl on hardened pariah standards, and she's quite polite. Madeleine also has ghoulish habits (for example, she might decide to eat and sleep in a torture chamber or as a young mother wouldn't think twice about usign a rotting human rib cage as a baby crib), mostly due to being born to an undertaker for a father and having a cagotte mother, who are good friends with an executioner family. Madeleine is also the type of person who's equally polite regardless of the social status of the ones she's adressing, showing equal verbal politeness, another value that comes from frequenting the executioner cast. Madeleine is also quite coquetish, but in a way that's very domestic and "cute" as opposed to "sexy". She's also insecure about looking "spankable", and it's part of the reason she keeps her hair so long, also because she grew emotionally attached to it, and was uncomfortable about becoming rosy-cheeked, partially because it made her less attractive in the eyes of her then-boyfriend, and also because it made her more attractive in the eyes of men of higher status, she's been taught to fear with good reason.
