one of the very striking things about doing our hitch was just -- getting to see ecosystem gradients, how even just a little bit of water + elevation can mean the difference between bone-dry sage scrub that's scorching in the desert sun, and alpine meadows that are in full wildflower bloom, just five-ten miles apart. and old-growth pinyon pines aren't, generally speaking, as massive or obviously striking as other types of conifers. but there was still a particular feel to the section we were sampling in the Pequop Mountains -- mostly you could tell they were much older than the other trees we'd been seeing because they had all sorts of funky growth patterns; sections of dead trunk, one tree that had fallen over and just kept chugging along and had, like, five main trunks. we're not coring or anything, so no idea how old they actually were, but i think 100 - 200 years is probably a lowball. now. the closest thing we had to an Incident during this (relatively smooth) hitch. is that we'd been coping with the heat wave in the southwest, working in daytime temperatures that got up to over 80 / 90 degrees (idk we didn't have a thermometer), driving through triple digits. then we got to the middle of Nevada, and set up one of our camps up in the aforementioned beautiful mountains. we all went to bed a little early because it was too chilly for anyone to feel like staying out of their sleeping bags (the first time this had happened during our hitch). when we woke up, everything was frozen. i'm talking frost on the inside of our tents. frozen water in the bottles we'd kept in our tents. olive oil in our kitchen box turned to, like, olive slush. it had dropped to solidly below freezing that night. needless to say no one had slept particularly well, and breaking down camp took forever, just because everyone kept having to take breaks to keep fingers from getting frozen while handling tent poles. no moral to this story other than i will continue to always, always include 'cold-weather gear' on fieldwork packing lists.
