Seein' too many Twitter refugees asking if they'll get in trouble for saying "kill yourself" to people and while no, you're not gonna get nuked from orbit, that is maybe something you just shouldn't be doing in general perhaps?? Maybe telling people to kill themselves is bad actually?? Some of y'all are wild, why is the first thing you can think to ask on a new platform if you can send one of the worst kinds of harassment to people?? Grow tf up and learn how to use the block button. It'll do wonders for your mood, trust me.

Obviously this is far from the only reason to divest oneself of anti-addict sentiments, and I think that "addicts are people who are deserving of kindness and humanity" should be reason enough to do so, but I feel like there is a very, very short pipeline from anti-addict sentiment to a mentality that finds any joy, pleasure, or comfort (or even, like, alleviation of suffering) to be inherently suspect. Especially if it's a form of joy that the person making the claim doesn't understand or thinks themself above. (i.e. it's usually anti-theists talking about "dependence on religion", and it's usually sexually conservative people talking about "masturbation addiction".)

Like, I've seen anti-addict rhetoric applied to the most harmless and natural things a person could find happiness or comfort in, simply because they are seeking a source of happiness and comfort. I was once told, as a child, that I was "addicted" to reading books, and that my reading "habit" would lead me directly into hard drugs when books no longer gave me the escapism I craved. Fucking. Books. It sounds like a fake tumblr story but it's a real thing that happened to me and this kind of rhetoric literally trained me to distrust anything that made me feel less miserable.

This feels like it has roots in a certain type of American Protestant ideal that one shouldn't be happy, that suffering purifies the soul and the ability to stoically endure suffering is a sign of strength, that this world is sinful and taking joy in it is also sinful. And honestly, I want off this ride, because I think I deserve a life I can enjoy living and I think running from anything that helps me enjoy life might be counterproductive.
