A/N: HELLO IT’S ALMOST 2AM HAHAHAHA WHAT IS LIFE??? 😭 Anyways, I’m excited to present part 1 of 2 of ‘If the Horseshoe Fits’! I’ve been working on this fic like a mad woman this past week, and in that time, it’s changed drastically from the lighthearted, crackhead story, I had additionally planned 🥴 I had a moment writing part of it, where it took a turn for angst, oops - surprise, surprise. This story had also turned out MUCH longer than I was expecting - I think it’s headed for 20K now that I’m almost done 😳 Per request from some readers (and clown, read: @autumn-lv 😘😂), I split the story into 2 parts for better ease of read. I figured it would also give me a some more time to perfect the ending, which I do feel is a little rushed rn. This is too much talking and forewarning from me LOL. Without further ado, please proceed and read! Here goes nothing-

It’s the first time I’m really stepping out of my comfort zone of love triangles, uni!au’s, and modern young adulthood struggles, so all constructive criticism is welcomed! God I really hope this story doesn’t sound too childish 💀

“Who is that, Val?” you asked. 

Hands full of the fabric from the skirt of your dress, you stopped at the edge of the stream. The soft mud seeped in between your toes, though you didn’t notice as your attention was fixed on the raven-haired beauty riding on an equally gorgeous black horse in the distance. The horse galloped gracefully across the open field with the overgrown grass, adding life to the gray and gloomy day, like a streak of black paint on a white canvas. The sound of its hooves beat rhythmically against the hard ground, as if the pair was putting you in a trance. The rider was a young man, perhaps your age or a year or two older. He sat tall and steady on the horse, his skin kissed by the sun and shoulders broad. The wind blew through his fringes and the neck of his white tunic flapping in the wind. The sleeves were rolled up to his elbow, revealing his tanned and toned forearms while he tightly gripped the reins, maneuvering the direction of his companion. 

“Him?” Val asked, the elderly maid throwing a glance over her shoulder at the rider rushing across the field. What felt like forever for you, was mere seconds for Val. She turned back to you and eyed you curiously. 

You nodded once. 

“That’s Kim MIngyu,” Val replied. She unfolded the towel and shook the wrinkles out. “He’s the new stable boy.”

“Kim Mingyu,” you tried out his name on your own tongue as you watched him disappear into the woods. 

“Come now, child,” Val waved her hand for you to come closer. “We mustn’t let your mother find out that you were out playing in the water again.”

You let out a heavy sigh, reluctant to return to the palace: the beautifully lavished in red velvet and gold chateau that was simultaneously your home and your dungeon that encaged your free spirit. Despite your heavy heart as you stepped onto the grass, the scene of the stable boy speeding through the fields played over and over in mind. A small smile spread across your face, giddiness spreading across your body as Val wrapped you in the warm towel. 

“What are you smiling about, princess?” Val asked. 

You tried to suppress your smile, pressing your lips into a tight line. Trying to feign nonchalance, you shrugged your shoulders and added a head shake for good measure. “Nothing.”

While you powered ahead, your personal maid followed in suit, eyeing the back of your head hesitantly. Though you were the queen’s daughter, Val had practically raised you, tending to all your needs since you were five - you were practically her own. She has watched you long enough to recognize the mischievous grin that you always tried to hide when a new idea was blooming in your head. What Val couldn’t decipher, however, was the starry-eyed look that veiled your youthful face. Her throat constricted as an unnerving feeling settled in her chest. 

Whatever was about to happen, Val could only pray that you would not get hurt. 

Mingyu let out a sigh of relief, the corner of his lips upturning, satisfied, as he ran the chipped, wooden bristle brush one last time through Bright’s mane. The horse purred at Mingyu’s touch and nuzzled its nose into its rider’s hand. Running a hand from Bright’s forehead to his muzzle, a comforting warmth spread across his chest at this. 

For the first time in a long time, Mingyu finally felt content with his life. The rowdy and grubby little boy who was raised on his uncle’s farm and chased after the ponies wouldn’t have believed that he would make this far to be tending to the royal family’s and their guards’ horses. Perhaps it wasn’t a grand dream (nor was it really his dream), and yes, to the average person, this would be a lowly job. However, Mingyu was different in that he had no specific dream or goal in life. He was a free spirit that flowed with the wind of life, going wherever it took him. And right now, he was content that it took him here to the royal stables, surrounded by his favorite and most familiar creatures that he may understand more than humans. He had a roof over his head, food on the table, and money he could send back to his aunt and uncle, so they could keep their farm running. Of course, there was always the hope that the wind would take him higher in the ranks at the palace, but for now, this was enough to make him happy.

“Hi!” a cheerful voice chirped, rousing Mingyu from his musing.
