Hey, so, I just finished my fourth rewatch of Riptide, and I have done some math while doing so, and I wanna share it.

Did you know that throughout this entire campaign Chip has received 132 lightning damage in total?

Well that itself might feel like a lot, until you hear abt Jay Ferin, who received a total of 199 lightning damage, a whooping 67 more damage than Chibo.

Now.

Gillion Tidestrider. The reason I decided to count this shit in the first place. I needed to know. And I did indeed find out.

That Gillion Tidestrider, from start to finish, from episode 1 to 115, has suffered 382 lightning damage. A full 183 more damage than Jay and fucking 250 more than Chip. He is a literal lightning rod in a fish disguise, and here is your proof.

This is something I wanted to talk about for a while, cause the part of ep.98 in which Gillion remembers about the thieves threatening arson while they do their best to carry him to the small boat that soon becomes his only chance for survival will always be so damn impactful to me.

Cause at this moment Chip and Jay are acting do damn human. They act the way the Elders told Gill humans would act. They sacrifice the safety of others for their personal gain, they leave people to die to achieve their own goal, to save only what is most precious and valuable to them instead of seeing each life as equal. And yet, when they make this pinky promise with Gill, when they are lying to him about ensuring these people's safety, even if they know they can't guarantee that, that some may die, Chip and Jay feel beautiful. There is something so divine about their sin. Cause even if the emotions of Chip and Jay, are raw, flawed, wild and panicked, selfish, they are also sincere and pure too, cause ever since the ice arena incident, they've only lied to Gillion FOR Gillion. They lied to protect him from the world, to preserve him, to keep him close, to not lose him, cause to them Gillion became their treasure. He became their reason to keep going, to keep growing, a reason to give back. He became someone who will be there for them when their world is falling apart, someone who when they doubt and hate themselves more than ever, will tell them 'I will fight for you'. He'll be the one to tell them, right when they are just at the brink of giving up, 'You're enough for me.'

And in that moment they look at him, body growing weaker, his strength fading, as he struggles to stay awake, they look at him and they don't care who has to die to save him. Because they care for him and love him so much, they do not care about lying to him. They do not care about what comes after as long as there is an after for Gillion. They don't care about anything because they are human and they are selfish, and they are selfish because they love. And they love so fully and unapologetically and they do it all for him, because he won't do it for himself. And maybe he can see that, at least a little bit, and he loves them just as much, and maybe he choses to believe in their lie and he lets them do that for him. Cause he doesn't wanna leave them either.

I think that a lot of the time when people talk about Chip and his upbringing they don’t realize how influential Price was.

Here’s the thing, without Reuben I believe Chip fully would’ve been able to move on from the Black Rose. I mean when you look at Lizzie she moved on almost completely and has a new life but Chip is stuck. The difference between what happened between them was that Lizzie was able to stick to her morals, she was able to follow a path she wanted and she kept the lessons they taught her. But Chip went to Price. He was forced to do things he didn’t believe in to survive. And more than that, acting that way and appealing to Price meant that he recieved love. And when I listen back to the Fey Wild arc and Chip says, ”Well he isn’t here” to justify doing something bad I can only think of Price because those words are the words he said to Chip about Arlin. After a while that thought drove deep into him. But the thing is he knows that the things he does (that Reuben taught) are bad and he wants to be a better person but he can’t because Arlin isn’t here. Chip doesn’t think he can be a good person without Arlin. So he looks for him because that is the closest he can get to self improvement. He’s hoping that Arlin will be his savior. He’s hoping that when he saves Arlin he will be forgiven for his sins. Captain Reuben Price made it so Chip could never fully move on.

This is one of the reasons I love his character so much which is funny because initially I absolutely hated him. He took advantage of Gillions naïve view on the world and he did initially use Gillion and Jay to forward his goal of finding Arlin. Trying to become a good person while being a bad friend. But he does become better at it. Through their adventures he’s become a much better person but, like with what happened with the lie with Edyn, he keeps messing up and he’s exhausted. Now he thinks that finding Arlin will stop that. He thinks it will mean no more mistakes like becoming a good or perfect person is a switch he can flip. So far he’s becoming better naturally but what does happen when he finds Arlin and as I suspect Arlin is changed and doesn’t like Chip anymore or what if he’s dead. Then Chip has no savior. Despite all the progress he has made he’ll give up on the idea of becoming a good person. He’ll think he’s broken beyond repair and I fear for him.

All this to say I hate Reuben Price.
