Possible hot take: Javier Escuella was always considerably arrogant, and it wasn’t exaggerated only in the first game. There are a multitude of interactions around the camp (some as minimal as him becoming angry because Sean was… walking infront of him) and I think he just didn’t portray himself like this to Arthur which is why he doesn’t seem that way to us. Camp interactions mean a lot. Also checked his voice files and when annoyed he’s extremely rude to anyone he interacts with, far more than other characters. Not sure if this one was intentional. Javier is a vain man, as Sean remarked.

That is not to say that he isn’t a good character. Everyone has their flaws, though I believe his are overlooked by the fandom. Really his entire personality is overlooked.

Also “Escuella was always a torn man. A cynic who desperately wanted to be a romantic. [...] Javier would die fighting for what he believed in. He had a lot of passion, but no love” and “When Dutch started falling apart it hit Javier harder than any of us. He went crazy. It's like the one thing he ever believed in turned out to be a fraud. [...] but he never cared for me or anyone else. Not any of his so called brothers.” Isn’t that interesting??? Why does no one seem to talk about how John describes him? Javier is not a romantic, though he’s often stereotyped in the fandom as some flirtatious, bold Mexican guy. Having “lots of passion, but no love” is also an intriguing remark to his character. Obviously we shouldn’t take John’s comments at face value because he isn’t a reliable narrator, but we know they were close back in the day and he probably has more insight that what we see from Arthur’s view.

I dunno though, I just think he could be discussed more. To me, Javier is one of the most realistic characters in RDR despite his rather small amount of screentime.

People are always like: but at the end, in a few seconds, Javier eventually pointed his gun and John and Arthur! He was also with Dutch going back to save John and left him to die!

Yes, I also noticed that in the last seconds his gun is pointed at John and Arthur. It's like a second before they all have to hide because pinkertons are shooting. Conclusion? For me it looks like his gun dropped down when he heard first shoot, not knowing from which side it came and wanting to protect himself no matter what. But after that Javier and Bill are the only ones that didn't chase John and Arthur. I don't think it's because they got lost, they simply decided not to and to save their own life.

About him not saving John. Remember that games starts with him going to save his friend. Arthur had doubts few times but he kept going forward, following almost nothing. On the last mission he is with Dutch, to save John again. We don't know what really happened there, but seeing Javier and Dutch interaction in Clemens Point we can assume that leader simply forced him to go back. Or maybe Javier was a bit too far to see that they could help John and when he heard Dutch saying that there is no way to do it: he trusted him. We talk about man who's blindly loyal to a person, who was a first friendly face in a long time, to a man that probably treated him way better than his own father. John and Arthur grow up with Dutch, but for Javier it all was still fresh as he was in America only for like 5 years and had to deal with a lot of hate and racism. We talk about a man who desperately wanted to survive, because he wanted to see his country and sister one more time before dying.

Conclusion: Javier is a character with a lot of layers and if someone ignored his interactions with other gang members in the camp - they definitely can't understand how deep and complex he is.

I SWEAR. There needs to be more appreciation for this man. Javier is such a well written character and it racks my brain that THERE IS SO LITTLE WRITTEN WORKS ABOUT HIM. This man would worship you, love you, give you about anything you could ever ask for. Especially in the bedroom. You want slow loving sex? You got it. You want it as rough and leg shaking as possible? You got it. You wanna be overstimulated until you’re practically sobbing for him to stop? You got it.
