“Fuck off out my fucking light,” Reg says by way of greeting as he lays back, arms folded behind his head, on the thin blanket spread over the rocky ground. Out of the corner of his eye, he can see a pair of skinny ankles and neatly stretched socks and knows that this request is about to be thoroughly ignored. He sighs, more out of a stubborn need to cling to at least a pretense of irritation than any real dissatisfaction. “What?”

“‘Welcome back, Johnny,’” Johnny says. Grit scuffs into the air, sticking to the sweat of Reg’s skin as he drops down beside him, not bothering to see if Reg will make the room he’s already making for him on the blanket. “‘Nice to see you’re still alive’.”

“Didn’t doubt it, did I?” He sniffs and turns his head, squinting up at the flex of Johnny’s shoulder as he bends to rest on his elbows. There’s a new bruise beginning to blossom just below his bicep and he traces the curve of it round to a dark scrape at the base of Johnny’s ribs. His lip curls.

“Fucked it?”

“Fucked it,” Johnny agrees, with a voice so tight and unhappy that it sounds like it is rising from some place far distant. His knee swings wide with artful accident, bumping against Reg’s own.

It’s too hot to be touching. Reg lets it rest there anyway; one hand drifting down to brush against the skin of Johnny’s thigh. He can feel him tense, then relax beneath his fingers.

“Next time-”

“Here,” Johnny says, interrupting. Something small is tossed with a light thump to Reg’s chest. 

“What’s this?”

“Looks like a book to me.”

The muttered curse that wants to fall from his tongue is stilled by the dark glittering of Johnny’s gaze when he looks down, waiting for Reg to inspect the proffered gift. He turns it over in his fingers. Its cover is battered, scratched and dust-worn, like it has passed through a thousand hands and will pass through a thousand again. 

“Paddy’s your man if you want a reader,” he says.

“Paddy’s not my man,” Johnny replies. He turns his face up to the sun again. “It made me think of you. You like her, I remember.”

Pages flutter loose when Reg opens the book. He half-grins at the title. “I’ve read this one. Where the fuck did you find it?”

Johnny shrugs. “It was in the road. After.”

The two of them fall silent as another figure stalks past them, shoulders squared, hackles raised. There’s a fight brewing again. Reg’s fingers tighten, pressing white against the sun-reddened flesh of Johnny’s leg. Easy.

He stills, watching Johnny, while Johnny watches the captain, who disappears into the dark beyond a doorway again. A thin hand rests over his own and he turns his palm upwards, lacing their fingers together without a word.

“I’m glad I found it,” Johnny says quietly.
