I just LOVE THIS SONG! i am angry everytime i realize william finn took this masterpiece out!
“ Come on, just a really quick phone call, for Jason “ for jason whatever will make you feel good marv! (I LOVE THIS HEADCANON that Marvin is the one inviting Whizzer to the Bar Mitzvah so much its so unique))))
“ How did it go from an invitation to a Bar Mitzvah to asking Whizzer on a date?” If we can sum up the Falsettoland act it will be this.
“ With a quick glance toward a framed photo of Jason and Whizzer in front of the trophy the child’s baseball team had won” MARVIN IS A GOOD DAD :(((
“ but it was to make sure of Marvin’s intentions” this sentences in my mind just made me feel like Whizzer is still hurt and hard to trust at marvin and this not break my heart but BEAT UP MY HEART
“ “It was great talking to you Marv ‘ he said it HE SAID MARV!!
What was he to wear? DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNNN
frick it, here's some fanfic.
So I might make a series of going into the cut Falsettos song Three Dates With Marvin and Whizzer: A True Story because I can't stop thinking of Marvin and Whizzer <3 It's a bit shorter than the other chapters of this are going to be if I do the other 3 dates but I hope you guys like it. :) If there is any way I can be a better writer, let me know! I haven't written in a while but I decided to take a shot at it, so it's a bit bad. But again, I hope you guys like it :)
TW:
Mentions of a past toxic relationship kind of? I don't know but I want to be sure no one gets triggered. Also F*ck and H*ll incase anyone is sensitive to those words :)
Three Date With Marvin and Whizzer: A True Story
Part One
A phone call. That’s all Marvin had to do. But his body wouldn’t comply. He glanced around his apartment. With the blinds closed, only the end table light illuminated the green rotary phone, the rest of the room was covered in inky blackness, leaving just Marvin. And the gleaming phone. Jason would have called and been finished by now. In fact, Marvin probably would have made Jason do it if the boy hadn't been at his mother's. But Marvin just couldn’t punch in the numbers of the ripped piece of paper. He couldn’t call Whizzer Brown. Even with him only wearing a t-shirt and boxers and the AC turned up to fight the brutal summer heat, Marvin’s face was warm with dread.
‘Come on, just a really quick phone call, for Jason, then you can hit the sack.’ Marvin thought. It was already 8:41, Marvin didn't have the time to wait anymore tonight. With a mumbled ‘fuck it', the middle-aged man had quickly dialed Whizzer’s number. After a few rings, along with the longest seconds of Marvin’s life, a voice cut through with careful precision,
“Hello, this is Whizzer Brown.’
“Hi, W-Whizzer!” 'Fuck-'
“Marvin! Hello.” All the careful grace of formality was dropped from the other man's voice. Marvin was swooning at the sudden change in Whizzer’s tone, seemingly only reserved for him.
”Yeah it’s me, how are you?”
“Fine, fine. Been a while since we talked, huh?” They both knew it hadn’t been that long, maybe a week, with their last meeting being at Jason’s baseball game. But Marvin nevertheless agreed.
“Yeah, sorry. Uh. You probably know Jason is getting Bar Mitzvah’d soon,” A hum of agreement could be heard from the other line. “He, um, really wants you to be there as a special guest. I know this is sudden, but, please? For Jason?” For a few moments, nothing but the occasional rumble of a passing car could be heard.
“...Are you still there?” Then a response that made Marvin’s heart flutter.
“I’m right here, can-”
“Can I maybe see you?” A hand quickly fastened to Marvin’s mouth while Whizzer froze up. Fuck. What the hell did he just do? How did it go from an invitation to a Bar Mitzvah to asking Whizzer on a date? He had been keeping his feelings hidden to respect Whizzer and with this damned phone call, he revealed everything. Every hidden blush, every admiring look, every touch that lit his whole body on delightful fire, every time he stopped himself from revealing his true passion, have been in vain, because of that one sentence. What if Whizzer thought he was trying to trick him? To worm his way into being his lover again? To-
“I’m still here and breathing.”
A tense pause left Marvin's throat tight, tears stinging the corners of his eyes.
“I can’t forget when it was bad…” Marvin couldn’t blame him. It had been so horrible, they were both unhealthy for each other, with Marvin resorting to violence and outbursts while Whizzer replied with snarky comments and advances towards other men. How could they ever be together again? It’s a miracle that Whizzer even accepted Marvin’s friendship but a romance? Impossible! But yet again, Marvin’s mouth was faster than his brain.
“Let me try to make it right.” What did he just say? Why is he continuously fucking up everything in this phone call?
“When?” With a quick glance toward a framed photo of Jason and Whizzer in front of the trophy the child’s baseball team had won, Marvin had a bright idea. However, amid Marvin's hesitation, Whizzer had repeated,
"When?"
“Tomorrow? There's a baseball game tomorrow, isn't there?” A giggle erupted from Whizzer, coating Marvin’s freckled cheeks pink with humiliation. Whizzer's tone turned coy and playful.
“A baseball game? You hate baseball. Are you just trying to up your chances of me going with you?”
“No! I just..just wanted to do something you would like so at least you have fun…” Whizzer paused, for now, it was his turn to be flustered. A dumb smile crept onto his face, not the practiced flawless smirk, but a love-struck grin.
“Marvin, that’s so sweet. I…I'm a bit scared, but, I wanna try this. You’ve seemed to really change, you know? I hope that doesn’t sound judgemental or that I think I'm better than you or-,” Great, just what Whizzer needed to be, flustered. However, Marvin didn’t mind, he liked the hitch in his voice and his tender tone. Whizzer decided to stop and breathe.
”So! I’ll pick you up around 6, okay? You know what my car looks like, right?” Marvin would have intervened and picked him up instead, but he had given the car to Trina in the divorce.
“But Marvin, could you pay? Is that too much?” Whizzer knew it was a ridiculous request, but it was to make sure of Marvin’s intentions. If Marvin just wanted a young boy toy to use, he would just go to the bar, but if he really wanted Whizzer, if he really saw him as a person, he would put more effort than just nice words. However shallow it sounded, Whizzer knew this game, the quick and cheap desire for another man, for he had been the victim of it countless times, and had made this ‘test’ to protect himself.
“Of course, it’d be my delight, Whizzer.” Marvin had replied, soft and sincere. God, Whizzer would have melted into a puddle of a blushing mess right there if he could. How does Marvin have this much control over him? How could the man who had been so commanding be so understanding? He didn't want to love him, he wanted to deny everything, including this date, but again, Marvin's sincerity had twisted him around to be head over heels for the man.
“It was great talking to you Marv, I’m excited to see you tomorrow.”
‘Me too. Goodnight, Whiz.”
With a click and the gentle placing of the paper upon the table, Marvin clicked the lamp off and drifted off to his room, the pitter-patter of his bare feet echoing in the hall before collapsing into his bed, cheeks blushing bright red. A giggle emitted from his mouth, corners upturned, before placing his cold pillow upon himself in a useless attempt to cool his face down. However, a daunting thought stopped him, sending a chill of terror down his spine. What was he to wear?
