The Albatross
The Albatross
Potential Themes:
-Guilt and Regret: The albatross is often associated with guilt and the weight of past mistakes. It could suggest a song exploring a past action that still haunts her, asking for permission to release the pent-up emotions.
-Feeling Trapped: The albatross, unable to land for years, could symbolize feeling trapped or burdened by a situation she can't escape. The album's title, "The Tortured Poets Department," further supports this idea of feeling confined and tormented.
-Betrayal and Heartbreak: The albatross' complex mating habits could represent betrayal or heartbreak within a relationship. The question "Am I allowed to cry?" might be asking for permission to express raw emotions after a painful experience.
-Breaking Free from Expectations: Albatrosses have a long period of solitary flight before returning to land. This could parallel a desire to break free from societal pressure and expectations, seeking emotional liberation.

what’s an albatross
here anon!
The phrase albatross around my neck refers to a heavy burden or some sort of curse that’s causing distress or stopping you from doing something. When you have an albatross around your neck, you carry the weight of something holding you back or dragging you down. Kind of like carrying around a big bird, only less feathery and more metaphorical.
Loving the discussion about "Am I allowed to cry?" happening (like @taylortruther's blog) and it also strikes me that it may also be like, getting over the shock of the immediate situation (e.g. ripping the bandaid off/following through on the breakup) and finally asking yourself if it's time now to let it out/grieve? As in, "can I cry now? Is it safe now?" (Is [the worst of] it over now? or Am I in the clear yet? if you will.)
Like, steeling yourself to do The Thing and then once The Thing is over, you finally come down and feel all the feelings.
