A few years ago I would have been aiming for hermione, but violet is my ideal rn. I loved a series of unfortunate events so much growing up, and violet definitely had a huge impact on me, I really wanted to be her lmao (excluding the absolute tragedy she and her family went through of course)

I agree with this, but from the clips I've seen from the anime (I haven't watched it yet, only read the manga) the anime seems to have cut out a lot of Near's thought process, so I can see why people might think his deductions come out of nowhere. Correct me if I'm wrong, of course, but obviously in the manga there are pages and pages of just near thinking, and I'm not sure if that was adapted. Of course the point about being influenced by light is the main point, and very much the truth.

I think most of the reasons people dislike Near from death note don't have anything to do with Near himself- they have to do with being unable to recognize Light as an unreliable narrator. The most common reasons people cite for hating him aren't really things we're shown about Near, they're things Light says or thinks about Near. The idea that Near's just a worse version of L- Near doesn't actually have that much in common with L if you think about it for more than a second; the similarities are mostly aesthetic. Near's motivations and behaviors are pretty distinct from L's. The idea that he's unemotional- especially in the anime, near can be pretty straight-faced, but just because someone's facial expressions aren't readable doesn't mean they aren't behaving emotionally. Near is shown being annoyed, afraid, and more often showing positive emotions- acting amused, smug, etc. The degree of pettiness he shows towards Light alone is indicative of feeling something. The idea that his deductions come out of nowhere- we're shown how he comes to his conclusions. The idea that he's less competent or intelligent than a character like L- just plain not true. We know these things aren't true. We're shown that these things aren't true. But you know who does think of Near as a worse copy of L, who doesn't see Near's emotions, who doesn't witness his thought processes, who has a very strong and very low opinion of him, who is regularly shown to be wrong in his judgements of other characters but whose opinion some fans still, for some reason, tend to take as law?
