I know this isn't how it works but I like to think about if when something goes through one of the ghosts it leaves a hole... So, if a bird flew through one of them or if a butterfly did there would be an oddly shaped bird/butterfly hole in them, of course it's only for a few seconds and the smaller the hole the quicker it closes up. So if one of the livings walk through them they're kind of like a cutout from hole in the wall for a moment.

THIS IS SUCH A FUN HC !!!!!! :33 i think when butterflies fly through flower it always feels painful but she words it as tickles. like. that doesnt tickle girl that feels like a bear attack
