Reposting my post about Itsuki and Sensui relationship canon status: I would like to clear the misunderstanding. 😇 Togashi absolutely confirmed Itsuki and Sensui relationship status here.

This is the original text in Japanese confirming their dating status:

"...仙水に倒されかけるが 、 その後仙水と * 、 つきあい始める..."

Togashi used "つきあい始める" (or tsukiai hajimeru) which means "to start dating" or "to begin a relationship". Even if you don't speak Japanese, you can easily find this meaning online with a quick search, too.

These are all basic websites with not much dive in the Japanese slang use but you see can see the context and clearly intended meaning of the phrase/word/verb used by Togashi sensei.

Tsukiai can refer to "association" or "relationship," and it's often used in the context of romantic relationships. And hajimeru (始める) means "to start" or "to begin". When you combine them in a phrase like ""...仙水に倒されかけるが 、 その後仙水と * 、 つきあい始める..."" it conveys the idea of initiating a romantic relationship with someone. It implies that Itsuki and Sensui transitioned from a state of not being romantically involved to starting a romantic relationship.

The context of the phrase Togashi added right after is also VERY important:

translates to "It seems he was seeing other humans before meeting Sensui." ( Or, "going out with other humans before meeting Sensui).

With this additional context it further suggests that the character began dating after a close encounter with Sensui and Itsuki had been involved with other people prior to meeting Sensui.

I don't know why focus on the general meaning of the verb tsukiai, when the context explicitly translates to started dating or started a relationship, or seeing each other romantically. Also, in Japan, this is used as a popular "slang" between teens and younger folks to confirm/imply a relationship.

The entire context of the phrase and the words here are confirming their status as dating. Its inconspicuous to say that つきあい始める is not used here in a romantic context, instead of focusing on what the verb tsukiai can mean WITHOUT the provided context.

I hope I cleared this misconception, and you can further find information about the phrase in Japanese, and just search the phrase in Japanese and you will find Japanese website and forums talking about how they want to refer to their significant other or how to express they are dating someone.
