i cracked fine line (or: fine line is defenseless but from harry’s pov)

so after reading the lyrics to fine line (the song) a few times, it finally struck me what the song could be about: an argument between louis and harry and how they deal with it (or... don’t exactly deal with it). so many of the lines complement the lyrics of defenseless so i’ll be using that song to explain my theory:

“put a price on emotion, i’m looking for something to buy” / “you don’t have to keep on being strong for me and you... acting like you feel no pain, you know i know you do” - louis wants harry to stop concealing his pain/feelings; harry’s trying to access and express his emotions, or it’s more of a “penny for your thoughts” kind of thing (harry wants to know what louis’ feeling)

“you have my devotion, but man i can hate you sometimes” / “wish i didn't need so much of you... i hate to say, but i do” - self-explanatory, they get on each other’s nerves sometimes but they love each other regardless

“i don’t want to fight you” / “i’m too tired to be tough, just wanna be loved by you” - self-explanatory, they don’t really want to fight/argue

“i don’t want to sleep in the dirt” - harry doesn’t want to go to bed angry or maybe just doesn’t want to sleep away from louis

“a test of my patience... you sunshine, you temptress” - harry wants to give in because well, louis is louis

“my hand’s at risk, i fold” / “got so much to lose” - they both have so much to lose if things go wrong; harry gives in because he doesn’t want to risk that

“crisp trepidation, i’ll try to shake this soon” / “you just keep on building up your fences” - harry’s hesitant to open up emotionally, but he wants to try

“spreading you open in the only way of knowing you” / “sleeping on our problems and we’ll solve them in our dreams; wake up early morning, and they’re still under the sheets” - they have sex to connect and to avoid talking about the problem, but it’s still there in the morning

“we’ll be a fine line... we’ll be alright” they’ll still be ok even with their underlying issues; they’ll figure it out

hot take: to be so lonely is woman 2.0… louis’ off stunting and harry’s jealous (“do you think it’s easy being of the jealous kind?”) and missing him (”it’s hard for me to go home and be so lonely”); he’s not saying “don’t call me baby again” because he’s angry at louis but because it hurts too much to be called that while louis has to pretend to be someone else’s; but he also feels bad for being upset because he knows none of it is real (”it’s just a trick, and this is it, so i’m sorry”)

i wrote half an essay in 20mins today when it’s not even due for another 4 weeks, reblog this to have a productivity lightning bolt strike you like it did me today
