Fishing the spare key out of your back pocket, you smiled to yourself. You were about to slip into Carmen’s apartment to surprise him for his birthday. He was still working late, and you’d just gotten off work yourself, but you had a few things in mind to make his night special. 

He’d insisted for weeks that he didn’t care too much for celebrating and going out or throwing a party weren’t anything he was comfortable with. He just wanted to spend time with you.

So you baked him a red velvet cake in your tiny apartment kitchen and plucked a DVD off one of your shelves to watch in bed together. 

It was simple, but that was Carmy.

Simple.

You tucked the cake into the corner of the kitchen counter to conceal it and tiptoed into his bedroom, noticing how the space smelled just like him.
