Since HELLPIERCERS Is A Tactics Game With Lots Of Weird Movement Mechanics And Targetting Rules, Not
Since HELLPIERCERS is a tactics game with lots of weird movement mechanics and targetting rules, not to mention the swarms, we've brought on the one and only @raul-volp2 to illustrate these in his signature style. I love what he's done with the vibe here so much, sort of an SNES version of the hyper horror nightmares @jnbutlerart and @leafie-draws are bringing.
The end result looks like a tutorial from the best PS1 tactics strategy game you only heard of in 2018 when a youtuber you like made a 3 hour video about it

Best of all, when we're done, you'll have a whole set of these tiles and sprites to use in VTT and other places. Raul's an absolute king and I can't wait to see what else we do.

I didn't mention the specific one, because I played a few, and, in particular, mashed up Supers and Frontiers for the latest oneshot I GM'd. That's one of the greatest features of this neat series of minimalist games, by the way, they're almost completely compatible with each other. Each one introduces a few additional details to manage some aspects of its genre, but the base mechanics are constant, making it easy to mix and match them. Another feature I particularly liked is the microsettings included with almost all games of the line, a veritable treasure trove of inspiration and campaign dynamics. I mentioned minimalism, and, in my experience, this is the game that best represents this philosophy. I'm not just talking about the system's simplicity, but also how it can easily be repurposed and hacked. Honestly, though, I often just turned back on my steps, as the additions really felt superfluous in the end. Finally, I have to admit that, while reading it, I had more than a few doubts about it, but once you bring it to the table, it just flows.

It's the implicit Warhammer OSR game, based on the Black Hack, but with a few nice twists that make it unique and fitting for the setting. Implicit like most of its other notable features, e.g. there are elves, dwarves and others, but they don't have heritage bonuses, and instead receive a bonus depending on how they were brought up inside their culture. The bias is intrinsic with the setting, but defined to highlight the cultures, and that doesn't mean your character might have grown in a different one, of course. I also appreciated how a character's profession is defined by what they relied upon in their lives, like resourcefulness or violence, to inform what they can do. Rules-wise it's a the Black Hack hack with just a few tweaks, most notably the Willpower die, that adds a level of depth to effort and magic use, and the choice of setting aside a couple attributes specifically for combat helps making each one feel more relevant. I particularly like how magic is wielded in this game, and the setting and adventure hooks tables set a well defined mood for the narrative.

At least as heavy as its fantasy predecessor, this cyberpunk game is a feat of design that hides a fun, desperate and straightforward game in its sleek entrails. Its bleak setting is crafted to give you the tools to just sit back and improvise a whole campaign by rolling on its numerous tables, or provide a frame for the story you want to tell. It will put your characters through a meat-grinder anyway, though. The merciless system has become the authors' signature, but tweaking power use by removing daily limits and increasing the fumble chance is an approach that I really appreciated. Not just because the backlashes are a lot of fun, and I really wanted to see them come into play more often, but also because it changes the dynamic from resource expenditure to risk versus reward, that, in my experience, is usually more entertaining at the table.

I’ve seen the Ursula K LeGuin quote about capitalism going around, but to really appreciate it you have to know the context.
The year is 2014. She has been given a lifetime achievement award from the National Book Awards. Neil Gaiman puts it on her neck in front of a crowd of booksellers who bankrolled the event, and it’s time to make a standard “thank you for this award, insert story here, something about diversity, blah blah blah” speech. She starts off doing just that, thanking her friends and fellow authors. All is well.
Then this old lady from Oregon looks her audience of executives dead in the eye, and says “Developing written material to suit sales strategies in order to maximize corporate profit and advertising revenue is not the same thing as responsible book publishing or authorship.”
She rails against the reduction of her art to a commodity produced only for profit. She denounces publishers who overcharge libraries for their products and censor writers in favor of something “more profitable”. She specifically denounces Amazon and its business practices, knowing full well that her audience is filled with Amazon employees. And to cap it off, she warns them: “We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words.”
Ursula K LeGuin got up in front of an audience of some of the most powerful people in publishing, was expected to give a trite and politically safe argument about literature, and instead told them directly “Your empire will fall. And I will help it along.”
