The Black Bridge was blurry as one soldier opened his eyes. He could barely make out the stars in the sky or the crests on the flags. All his thoughts were foggy from the haze of sleep.

 Yet he could not recall being tired when he arrived at his post. His body had long since adjusted to the nocturne watch, preferring to sleep during the day. As he rubbed the heavy exhaustion out of his eyes, the soldier resisted a yawn as he stood and scanned the bridge.

He saw other soldiers on the ground. Their breathing was the only indication they were alive at all. The soldier cast his gaze skyward—

And cried out in alarm when he saw the body of the King of Hearts hanging from one of the lampposts.
