Reading the Transcripts of Ethics Town is always a delight in itself.

I am back with more shenanigans.

In the light of Episode 6 of Season 2 and my other rambles of Ian and Romulus:

In ancient Rome, only kings were allowed to wear a purple toga.

That's all!

I love that podcast.

ETHICS TOWN SPOILERS UP TO EPISODE "History is written By...Who?"

Turned out longer than I intended and I didn't even add everything I wanted to say.

Romulus (love that choice of name), once he travelled back in time, is just a copy of the Romulus of his current present, placed in the past. So, a clone, you could say.

In his original future, Ethics Town was founded by a Richard, and he waited for a Richard to turn up and do it in the past he placed himself in. There's none. So he, Romulus (now Ryan), founds Ethics Town.

Is this the point were he changed the story or was it once he arrived in that time? Is this past a copy of the other one? Like when you have a word document, which we now call "History" and you save a copy of that document, you have "History Copy 1". Now, on your computer, tablet, phone, whatever, you can change "History Copy 1" into anything you want without altering "History". You all know how word and file saving works. I am sure.

My point is, did Romulus create a copy of the history? He said it himself, Ryan is not Romulus. They aren't one "continued consciousness." Is this what happened to the others? Is this the reason why Ian and Artemis have memories that they seemingly just made up? Because they have the memories and desires of Ian and Artemis from the other history. Is this why they are doomed by the narrative - because it's already written?

I'm pretty sure I am wrong because there are more things worth analysing, like the parallels between Ryan and January (I've read the tags on my other post - they are based on the same guy! That's so cool).

(Is Ian the Remus to Ryan being Romulus? Ian is from a neighbouring town, and Remus hopped over the small wall when they first started building Rome).

Is it ethical to jump back in time to change something? Even if you just want to experience life there, you change history.

Does anything of this post make sense to anyone else besides me?

I love media that lets me analyse and theorise. I know I have a tendency to see clues where there aren't any ("turning it into a mystery that needed solving"), but it's fun nonetheless to see what I can come up with and if anything is true in the end. Anyway, I look forward to more of Ethics Town.

Wait, does that mean the town will be flooded at the end of this podcast?

This is how I feel:

Good gods, I just googled something and found out something else. Why can't I stop?

I should probably reblog this post and continue there.

Continuation of me not being able to stop googling stuff. I don't even know if anyone's going to read this, but I do have to write it down. Otherwise, it won't let me be.

Spoilers ahead.

You know, an alternative spelling of January in the ancient Roman calendar is Ianuarius - abbreviated Ian.

Let me quote Wikipedia here:

"Ianuarius is conventionally thought to have taken its name from Janus, the dual-faced God of beginnings, openings, passages, gates and doorways (...)."

-> January and Ian both being the same person; Ian having two faces

"Janus is the God of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames and endings."

"Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace."

"Janus frequently symbolised change and transitions such as the progress of past to future, from one condition to another, from one vision to another (...). He represented time because he could see into the past with one face and into the future with the other."

-> In my opinion, this fits R. McBride as well, considering where (when) he came from*

While January was supposedly added later by Numa Pompilius, the oldest Roman calendar was believed to have been instituted by the founder of Rome - Romulus.

*King Romulus, after his death, was granted godhood under the name of Quirinius, which in Augustian Rome, "was also an epithet of Janus, as Janus Quirinius." So it once again makes sense that Ryan and Ian have parallels.

Coming back to 'is Ian Remus?'. Probably not. He feels more like Janus and/or Numa Pompilius. I am aware that Ian isn't the second Mayor of Ethics Town, but the topic is a time paradox. At this point, everything's possible.

Interesting side fact: the Roman pendant to Artemis is Diana, which can also be written as Iana. In some versions, Diana is tied to Janus.

This is it for now. I am sure I'll be back if no one stops me.

I've just listened to the Xmas special (canon)

THE ENDING!

And the descriptions in the () of the transcript had me wheezing. (Wtf bro??)

I've just binged Erhics Town and I cannot wait for Season 2. I called the plot twist of Episode 7 and I love that I was right, although I had a completely different theory at first (for this, see under the cut). I love the whole concept (speak of doomed by the narrative).

As I am writing this, I am listening again to Episode 8.

Spoilers under the cut! In form of a ramble. Whoops.

My first theory, when January was avoiding the question about his age and the fact that he hides his face, was, that he somehow founded the town and is at least a century old. That thought might have come from me listening to The Magnus Archives shortly before.

The thought that January might be the major came when he said he talked with the major on the roof, when he reacted to Artemis assuming he's the janitor with a hum. And I was right!

I also love the whiplash you get from January's rapidly changing mood. From cold major, to having a mental breakdown over his guilt, to sobbing over his daughter.

The whole story is about ethics and lessons but also, I feel, about the question of free will. They have a role and no chance, as of yet, to break out of it.

And the VOICE OVERS ("Who said anything about a God?") - AI feeding them their lines? Or are those glimpses from real world and the podcast it them somehow truly trapped in a simulation, where some of them (like Artemis) remember being a person? A social experiment, maybe.

Good gods, this is giving ME an existential crisis. My thoughts are all over the place xD

Anyway I am looking forward to Season 2 and more existential dread.
