common misconceptions about the types | intp edition

unfeeling space robots like the majority of thinkers, intps are sometimes viewed as detached and emotionless. when in reality, they are capable of feeling very deeply and intensely. it’s often their misunderstanding of these emotions, or difficulty in communicating them, that causes them to appear cold and unfeeling to those who find being in touch with their emotions comes naturally.

know-it-alls due to their dominant ti, intps know a lot of stuff (whether it’s actually practical or useful information is a different matter, but that’s of little importance to an intp). consequently, you might find them reeling off a boatload of facts or insights in a conversation that catches their interest. in these moments, some people take intps to be boastful know-it-alls, when really they are just happy to discuss something that they find fascinating. in actual fact, intps can be very modest about their intelligence and are often hesitant to speak on subjects that they are unfamiliar with.

anti-social loners intps are one of the most introverted of all the types, and often get misunderstood as being depressed or anti-social. in actual fact, intps cherish their alone time. not only do they enjoy it, they need it. for introverts, especially the intp (with inferior fe), socialising can be physically and mentally draining. time alone gives them the space that they need to reflect, pursue their interests and recharge their batteries.

What is the difference between an INTP and an INTJ?

INTP vs. INTJ: What’s the difference?

INTPs and INTJs can appear similar. They’reboth introverted, logical, and more intuitive/conceptually minded thanconcrete. However, they actually have NONE of the same cognitive functions.

image

INTP: Ti-Ne-Si-FeINTJ: Ni-Te-Fi-Se

Dominant function: Ti vs. Ni

INTPs and INTJs both have dominantintroverted functions, but their introversion manifests in different ways.INTPs look inward to judge information based on personal logic (Ti), whileINTJs look inward to perceive the essence or meaning of information (Ni).

INTP - Dominant Ti: INTPs look inward to judgewhat’s logical. They’re highly skeptical and analytical. Their logic issubjective in that it’s self-referential, therefore, what’s logical is whatmakes sense to them personally. Theyalone have access to the rules of their logic – if someone else wants to followalong, the INTP must be the one to explain. They seek accuracy and a sense oftruth. They’re fascinated by how things work. They enjoy the process of“figuring things out” just as much if not more than the end result. Their needto make sense of things is constant, and therefore can be prone to “thinkingthemselves in knots” due to a logical process that is relatively open-ended andsubjective in nature.

INTJ - Dominant Ni: INTJs on the other hand lookinward for a perception of essence. This is not a judgment or decision-makingprocess like the INTP uses, rather a method of perceiving the general idea ormeaning of things. Ni is constantly synthesizing ideas into a singular vision or understanding. Thisprocess is natural or subconscious, so INTJs often feel like they “just know”things without being able to point to specific details. An INTJs sense ofstored information is conceptual and emergent, focusing on what’s meant rather than what’s concretelyknown, which means few direct ties to the past as well as a sense ofpotentiality for the future. This makes INTJs particularly visionary and goaloriented, though they may miss out on important details along the way.

Auxiliary function: Ne vs. Te

It becomes easier to tell INTPs and INTJsapart once we take into account their auxiliary extroverted functions, becausethese are the ways that they primarily interact with the external world. TheINTP uses extroverted intuition to perceive conceptual possibilities, while theINTJ uses extroverted thinking to judge information using objective logic.

INTP - Auxiliary Ne: Unlike the INTJs intuition, which is oriented inward to perceive the singular essence of something, the INTPs approach to intuitive perception ismuch more exploratory. The INTP uses Ne to perceive hypothetical ideas, concepts, and theories. They apply their logical thinking process tounderstanding the abstract and theoretical. Their exploration of possibilitiesis only limited by the INTPs need to determine what makes sense and whatdoesn’t – otherwise, they’re constantly searching for new concepts to exploreor alternate points of view. The combination of Ti’s subjective logical processand Ne’s hypothetical emphasis makes them somewhat scattered, theoretical, andmore detached from a concrete sense of truth than their INTJ peers.

INTJ - Auxiliary Te: Unlike the INTPs personalized, subjective approach to logic, the INTJ sees logic as objective. They look tothe external world to determine what’s true, distinguishing fact from fiction, right from wrong, efficient from wasteful. This sense of external, shared logicmakes the INTJ more decisive than the INTP. Te logic is focused on defining, organizing, implementing, standardizing, and simplifying. Since their intuitiveperceptions are so focused, and Te is so efficient, INTJs generally have muchmore clarity and confidence in their decisions than INTPs. One of the mostnoticeable characteristics of INTJs is their lazar-focus – they’ll “just know”the essence of something, quickly understand how it can be implemented, andthen move on.

Tertiary function: Si vs. Fi

*INTPs and INTJs also have different lower functions, though the development of these functions varies from person to person. Therefore, don’t worry if you dont identify perfectly with either INTP or INTJs lower function descriptions

INTP - Tertiary Si: Though INTPs prefer to perceiveby exploring possibilities and concepts, they balance themselves out withtertiary Si, which checks back in what’s known, tried, and true. Si takes subjectiveperceptions of information from the external world and internalizes them tocreate a knowledge base of concrete, known truths. Si for INTPs representstheir vast collection of data– they perceive a possibility, but then look backinward to see if this new possibility matches up with their previousunderstanding or experience of the topic at hand.

INTJ - Tertiary Fi: Though INTJs prefer to judgebased on objective logic, they also have a set of deeply held personal valuesthat they stick to with conviction. They feel deeply, but unlike higher Fiusers, are generally very private about their emotions. INTJs are perceptiveabout the motivations of others, using themselves as a reference to understandwhat drives other people. Tertiary Fi helps them know what they believe in, andthey tend to be stubborn about sticking to their values at all costs, even ifothers disagree.

Inferior function: Fe vs. Se

INTP - Inferior Fe: While the INTJs feeling functionis inward oriented and highly concentrated, the INTPs feeling function isexternally oriented and generally their least accessed. Since INTPs are so busyfiguring out what makes sense with dominant Ti, they devote lessattention to expressing their feelings and making judgments that consider otherpeople’s values and emotions. This isn’t to say that INTPs have no feelings, infact, many feel very strongly, however, their sense of feeling is more diffused, and they are drained ratherthan energized by engagement with social conventions and group-values.

INTJ - Inferior Se: While the INTPs sensing functionis inward oriented, internalizing subjectiveperspectives of what they see in front of them, the INTJs sensing functionfocuses on exploration of sensations and other realities in the external world. However, since INTJs are so busy up in their own heads creating vision orperceiving essence, just “being” in the external world is ultimately draining. They often have trouble with spontaneity and would rather have a plan than “wing it” in the moment.

TL;DR: INTPs make sense of things (Ti) then explore ideas (Ne). INTJ perceive the essence of things (Ni) then decide based on objective logic (Te).
