Here’s a compiled list of places you can donate to support the #blacklivesmatter movement

1. Minnesota Freedom Fund - an FF providing direct bail for protestors and are actively working to end discriminatory, coercive, and oppressive jailing. However, if you see a Venmo account of MFF then do NOT donate - The Minnesota Freedom Fund does NOT have a Venmo account! More at http://minnesotafreedomfund.org

2. Black Visions Collective - they are a black-led queer and trans-centered organizing network. They’ve been raising funds to support the BLM chapter in MN and Reclaim the Block.

3. Reclaim the Block - this is a grassroots organization that is advocating for Minneapolis to invest in long-term alternatives to policing. They demand that Minneapolis divest from policing.

4. DONATE TO GEORGE FLOYD’S FAMILY - here’s the link to #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd support the family in their fight for justice.

5. DONATE TO AHMAUD’S FAMILY - here’s the link to #JusticeforAhmaudArbery so you can support the family in their fight for justice!

6. Black Lives Matter - Black Lives Matter is committed to fighting against the injustice black people face around the globe. They continue to advocate against the violence and killing of black people.

7. NAACP Legal Defense Fund - they fight for equality and justice for black people by providing legal counsel. The work they have done and continue to do is vital.

8. North Star Health Collective - they work in alliance with anti-authoritarian organizations to provide safe and healthy spaces. Their medics are on the front lines helping protestors.

9. Louisville Bail Fund - this fund is providing bail and post-release support for protestors. They provide preventative measures for those targeted by law enforcement and threatened with incarceration. They rely completely on community funds!

10. Twin Cities DSA - they are using donations to get groceries and hot meals to protestors on the frontlines in Minneapolis and low-income communities facing food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Remember that you can contribute anything you can. EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS!

~quarantine Vibes Masterpost~

~quarantine vibes masterpost~

as requested (though this is more resources and less vibes) and with a bigggg caveat that, obviously, life looks very very different for all of us right now. hopefully something on the list below will be useful to you. (art)

activities

this is gonna sound stupid but i really recommend deep-cleaning your house/apt, for a number of reasons. one, you’re gonna be spending some serious time in there, you deserve a nice space. two, you will inevitably unearth fun stuff you forgot you had. case in point: i found a deck of cards and now all we do is play rummy 500.

reading. so hot right now. trends really do come back.

comfort reads (and these) (and these). personally i’ve been alternating between bon-bon YA and slow, lush works by writers i already know i love, like melville & anne carson.

pandemic reads (and these).

scribd (unlimited ebooks & audiobooks) has a one month free offer rn; it’s usually $9/month. kindle unlimited also has a 2-month free subscription but i’m not linking to that, stop giving your money to amazon.

crafts!! producing an object with my own two hands feels like the best thing right now. i’ve been making kitschy potholders because i am emotionally in the third grade, but that spring cleaning will probably turn up all sorts of good crafty objects. if the adult coloring book your aunt gave you is lost for good, i recommend checking out #colorourcollections pages from years past.

go for walks/runs/whatever, but keep it local (no driving 4 hours away and infecting a new town with your old town’s germs), isolated (no popular jogging trails!), and legal (state parks & beaches are closed for a reason).

shopping, but make it free

PC games: here + here

print-and-play boardgames (& also cards against humanity, family edition)

magazines (through RBD + your library)

tv/movie streaming: HBO is free rn! & here are 10 other free streaming services. feel-good show plug: leverage is available on IMDB tv :-)

academic books: biiig long list here; does not include de gruyter (not all books are free rn, but a lot are–i downloaded 27 the other night. you may need to use a university VPN in order to have access, i can’t quite tell); cambridge UP; or manchester UP.

life, but make it virtual

free exercise classes (big list here; i hate working out so i’ve just been doing yoga with adriene.)

museum tours

theater & opera (the UK’s national theatre at home; the shows must go on; the met)

NPR has an ongoing list of free virtual concerts, sorted by genre & time.

nikon is offering all of their photography classes for free during april

fender’s offering 3 months of free online guitar lessons

adobe creative cloud is free for students until june

also there are a million academic MOOCs available right now, if your brain is in a place where that seems doable.

food

supercook lets you input the ingredients you’ve got and suggests recipes that make use of them! good for figuring out to do with those weird beans in the back of your pantry.

in my house: we’re working through the stupid big tea stash i unearthed and eating a lot of big-batch comfort food–soups, homemade mac & cheese, etc.

maybe this is only happening in california but we haven’t had flour in a full month so here is a roommate-approved chocolate cake recipe that only uses 1 tbs of flour

keep track of local food service strikes! if you’re ordering delivery from local businesses, please tip generously.

oh you’re trying to work?

(wheeze)

i hate working at home because i am really, really bad at it. the only thing that’s done the trick for me is physically changing workspaces (i never work at the dining room table downstairs but i live there now), wearing headphones, and lighting a candle.

ambient sound: coffitivity; DIY mixer.

cold turkey.

in general i’m just trying to be gentle with myself and acknowledge that doing work right now is absurd–it has to happen but it doesn’t have to be good or graceful.

coronavirus-specific resources:

facemask template. this is the handsewing one i’ve been using, from the NYT; if you have fabric + a basic sewing kit (needle, pins, thread) you’ll be good to go. if you don’t have access to a sewing kit, the CDC has two new-sew options here.

healthdata.org. this website has been good for helping my brain be reasonable about the situation; data is saturating the news rn but this site has concrete region-specific projections about fatality rates and resource use and is good for reminding you that this thing has an end point.

Quarantine Pro-Tips

Alright folks. So, if you’re in the same boat that I am - which is out of a job (we got laid off because restaurants in Texas were mandated to close dine-in services), worried about getting your bills paid because you lost your aforementioned job, on extended spring break and not returning to campus at all this semester, deeply concerned about all of your classes moving to an online format, and practicing social distancing - you are most likely feeling unproductive and bored out of your skull.

Here are some activities that have helped me:

Self care. It is amazing how much better you feel when you are clean, smell good, and you are wearing a fresh pair of clothes.

Doing something artistic, if you feel so inclined/have the materials to do so. For me, this has been getting back into painting and playing my violin

Spending time with your pets.

Spending time on your balcony/front porch, appreciating nature. This activity pairs very well with a cup of coffee or tea.

Taking this time to deep clean your house/apartment.

Face-timing/calling friends and family who are probably feeling the same way that you are.

If you are someone that wears make-up and enjoys make-up, absolutely feel free to get glammed up, even if it is just to watch Netflix. You aren’t wasting make-up if it makes you feel better about your situation.

Listen to music. I have rediscovered my love for Prince this week.

Learn how you can elevate your quarantine meals via Supercook - which is a free website that tells you what dishes you can make with ingredients you have in your kitchen. Personally, I am coming out of this quarantine a home chef.

Ask your friends/family what shows they are streaming. I have finished so many shows over the course of the last couple of days, and without recommendations I would be so incredibly bored. Would definitely recommend Tiger King on Netflix, by the way. That documentary was quite the trip. I would also recommend Schitt’s Creek and The Stranger.

Give in to Duolingo’s constant notifications and practice learning a new language!

Read some of those books you may have lying around, or re-read an old favorite.

File for unemployment if need be. It wasn’t too difficult for me personally; there should be an option to indicate that you lost your job due to COVID-19. This is the case for Texas.

Take this time to get ahead on course material, even if your online course schedule is tentative.

Feel free to catch up on sleep. It’s okay to rest and not be doing something 100% productive 24/7.

That’s all for now folks. Keep your heads up, stay the home for the love of god, and just do your best. We will get through this ordeal.

How are y’all coping this week?

“Responsibility to yourself means refusing to let others do your thinking, talking, and naming for you; it means learning to respect and use your own brains and instincts; hence, grappling with hard work. It means that you do not treat your body as a commodity with which to purchase superficial intimacy or economic security; for our bodies to be treated as objects, our minds are in mortal danger. It means insisting that those to whom you give your friendship and love are able to respect your mind. It means being able to say, with Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre: ‘I have an inward treasure born with me, which can keep me alive if all the extraneous delights should be withheld or offered only at a price I cannot afford to give.’”

But there is a reason ‘amateur’ comes from the Latin word for love: we also need to do something for simple love of the thing, whether we’re good at it or not. We need to remember how to be a child, to do things—run, laugh, climb, puzzle out—for the pure joy of it. Laughter, enjoying a meal, walking at dawn—such things cannot be left to the expert laughers, the professional diners, and licensed walkers.”

How to Get Going When You Just Want to Stay In Bed and Be Nothing

Some days hit you like a ton of bricks, and for those who already struggle, those days can be even harder. Hopefully, these little tips can give you a boost in your darkest moments.

1. Open a window, let some light and fresh air in. You might not want it now, but it will help you feel better in the long run.

2. Take a shower. Sometimes, this can be more difficult than we expect, but that’s okay. Just letting the water hit your back, or washing your face can make you feel more refreshed.

3. Work on a hobby that gets you going. Unfortunately, as good as it feels in the moment, lying in bed and watching netflix while the work you have piles up will only make you feel worse. Now, maybe you can’t tackle your assignments right now, but sitting up and drawing your favourite character or watering your plants while blasting some music will get you in a better mindset.

4. Change your music. Sometimes we need to listen to a sad ass song and just get all our emotions out, but once that’s done and dusted, don’t dwell. Listen to some up-beat music (if I may, I recommend our Pick Me Up Playlist by You) and try to keep your environment from matching your mood.

5. Get a healthy snack and drink some water. Never underestimate the power of good nutrition. If you can’t handle the thought of a full meal, some fruit will suffice for now. But remember what you eat fuels your body, so if you can bring yourself to fitting in a remotely well-balanced meal, you’ll be all the better off.

6. Make a list, pick one, simple task, and get it done. Maybe you have laundry to do and it’s piling up. Maybe you have to wash down the kitchen counter. Maybe you have a worksheet for school. Maybe it’s just making the list. Whatever you need to get done, write it down, and rather than letting that overwhelm you, pick one thing from that list to tick off. Slowly but surely, you will be able to tackle the bigger things.

7. Go for a walk. Getting some fresh air and simple exercise will refresh you without tiring you out. Bring some water, or maybe make it a trip to get some of your favourite snacks and a smoothie from Jamba Juice. If you’re struggling to get up and out, having something nice to look forward too can motivate you.

8. Think of why you’re feeling this way, and then let it go. More often than not, there is a reason you’re struggling to get up and out. Understanding the root of this feeling can help you move past it, tackle it, or keep it from holding you back.

I know this is pretty standard advice, but I think we all need that little reminder every now and again.
