the role of religion in the endoparasitic and wrought flesh universe is instrumental to the plot of both games. cynte believes in cnawl, his god of cognition, skill and logic, and he seems incredibly devout and disciplined because of this god. however, he is letting the tide of his emotions guide him to the parasites, which he has let himself believe is the next logical step in power and evolution, as well as his desire to be singular and powerful and the winner of all.

cults dedicated to gods are seemingly not uncommon, and we know this because of the protagonist of wrought flesh (i do not think she has a name, so i'll just be calling her eve). she is a gajeshian cultist, but the legacy of the cult is most important in her story. the sheer devotion and ironclad practices have led her to replacing her limbs with those of heros. people in their cult are pressured, expected, and conditioned to do great things, and plain deified if they succeed.

luce follows pyeridae, her goddess of love and light and all things good. this immediately speaks to a separation between her and cynte; cynte values logic and knowledge above all else, and luce values virtue and morality and love above all else. they balance each other out in a way, with one overflowing with love and the other uncaring of it.

both cynte and luce believe that the parasites are meant for them in some way. cynte believes he needs to master the parasites and develop a mutually beneficial partnership with them in order to become a god, while luce feels empathy for them. she is so lonely, and the parasites dig their claws in and make her feel special, like she is the chosen one for some great purpose. she won some amazing opportunity that cynte will never even get close to. she bested him.

this push and pull of devotion leads cynte to braving his way through the facility half dead, luce to abandoning him and eve to completely repurposing her body and mind.

religion is majorly important to people in this universe, i believe, because they lost hope. clearly, this is a universe fraught with terror and war and chaos with no reason in it at all. cynte tries in vain to understand it, luce continues living the best she can, and eve embraces and lives it completely.
