What goes bump in the dark? 

This softball sized, translucent jelly, Stellamedusa ventana, moves through the water like a shooting star. Wart-like bumps of stinging cells cover its feeding arms and bell. 

This bumpy jelly is just one of more than 200 new species that MBARI researchers have found in the depths of Monterey Bay.  Its genus, Stellamedusa, refers to the jelly’s translucent blue-white color and trailing arms, which reminded MBARI scientists of a slow-moving meteor or shooting star. It’s species name, ventana, refers to MBARI’s remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Ventana, a deep-diving submarine robot that first recorded the jelly on video in 1990.

One time, when I visited with my partner, we were talking to one of the volunteers at the bat ray exhibit, and they remembered a time when a little girl described the feeling of the bat rays as: "Soft, Wet Velvet"

Bat rays call coral reefs, kelp forests, and sandy-bottom bays their home. One of these habitats is our very own local wetland, the Elkhorn Slough–home to southern sea otters, thousands of migratory birds, and an important nursery and feeding grounds for bat rays. 

By raising awareness of these animals, voting, and letting our elected leaders at the local, state, and federal levels know we support legislation that protects these ecosystems, we can ensure that bat rays continue to thrive in their environment.

Today is bittersweet as we celebrate the first birthday without our beloved Rosa, the legendary sea otter who was a pillar of our sea otter surrogacy program. She lived a long and happy 24 years, was our oldest sea otter at the Aquarium, and raised 15 rescued pups during her time with us, including current sea otter resident, Selka!

Her playful spirit brought joy to all and significantly advanced our efforts in repopulating sea otters along the California coastline. Rosa’s legacy lives on both at the Aquarium and in the wild, where rehabilitated sea otter pups that she helped raise, and their descendants, continue to raise pups of their own, contributing to their species’ recovery in coastal California waters. 

As the Aquarium plans to open a new Sea Otter Rehabilitation facility to expand our surrogacy efforts, we carry the memory of Rosa with us and feel deep gratitude for her impact on the survival of her species. 

We’re also filled to the gills with gratefulness after an incredible two-day fundraising effort by online streaming personality DougDoug and his community, that brought in over $620,000 in memory of Rosa over the weekend!
