Not entirely sure this counts as a trope but it's definitely a thing and I wish it was more of a trope people tagged for so I could find it more readily, but fanfic—especially in some fandoms—has a tendency to take the barest hint of canon speculative biology for aliens, fantasy species, etc and just run with it. There are whole speculative biology write ups for various Star Trek species! Like, Yes Please, let's explore these characters' differences—bonus points if it's sexy, lol
