A Shadow In The Window

A simple digital painting of the corner of a house with a window. A gauzy curtain billows through the window and a subtle shadowy human figure lurks in the darkness within. A leafless tree casts a shadow on the wall of the house by the window.

oc-tober day 5: learning something new

(@thepromptfoundry)

The thing you did not highlight on the resume that you had handed Buggy the Star Clown was that your boating experience was very, very limited.

Maybe it was manipulative but he didn’t exactly ask and you wanted the job. Then about a week into your tenure, you and most of the crew need to hop on board the ship and set sail to get gunpowder. Cabaji orders you to raise the sail and you freeze, “Do what now?”

“Raise the – Captain!” He looked indignant, right at Buggy, “Did you seriously hire someone who's never been part of a crew before?!”

Buggy blinks, looking at you and quietly asking, “Is that true?”

“Uhh…”

Buggy frowns before looking to Cabaji and shaking his head, “They just didn’t hear you, go handle the anchor, Dylan’ll take care of this.” Buggy smiles, playfully bumping shoulders with you before motioning for you to follow his lead.

“This is easier to do with two people anyway,” Buggy says, leading you over to the ropes for the sail. He takes two of them, no hesitation, setting them in your hands, “First, you check to make sure there aren’t any knots. We’re good here. So, take these and pull – you’ll need to pull hard, but don’t jerk.”

You attempt to mimic what he’s saying and he frowns, coming behind you and taking the ropes, “Like this.”

You’re grateful that you’re not too distracted by those strong arms and the pleasant aroma of his musk so you can adequately repeat what he’s shown you. “Good job, Dylan,” he says, and your heart soars.
